As I've said before, the people who previously owned our house must have been small people with magic clothes that apparently never got dirty. Otherwise, they never could have tolerated the washer in the kitchen for TWENTY YEARS. What about the piles? Where do you put your detergent? What about the piles? Oh. I said that one already.
I can't really take credit for this next transformation. It was decided more by the men involved than by me, but I nodded my head a LOT while they were talking about it.As you can see from this wider shot, the kitchen was not lacking in the sink department. There were three. I could have washed both my hands and my right foot all at the same time in three separate sinks. Anyone up for a friendly game of sink twister? I could see the reasoning behind having a prep sink on the island, but the secret sink behind the back door had to go. But what to put in its place?
We didn't want to spend money to buy any new cabinetry. So it was jigsaw puzzle time.See that cabinet there on the left in the breakfast area? Pretty random, right? Well, we took that out and put it in place of the 3rd sink. Here is a peek at the process. Look how awkward that fridge is there!
Then, the other cabinetry on that wall was simply rearranged, the sink was replaced with a counter top and moved to the far left and the fridge fit perfectly in the space where the washer and dryer had been. Again, we didn't have to buy any new cabinets, we simply rearranged what was already there. Here is the end result.
And by the way, we do still have a washer a dryer. You can read about that room here.
For you who are interested, the paint color in the kitchen is Ivoire from Sherwin Williams (the same color I used in my former kitchen), the granite is New Venetian Gold and the back splash is a bisque mini-subway tile. I'm not sure the official name of it. I think the wall color looked better in my other kitchen because the cabinets were black and it was a nice contrast. But this kitchen is still in progress, so stay tuned.

So much better! How creative. Love the sink twister idea... ha!
So pretty! Love your solution!!
i love it! your new countertops are making me covet.
Much better!!! I'nm trying to figure out what the heck the third sink was for!! Drainage from the washer and dryer? Extra dirty stuff they didn't want to put in the kitchen sink?
Good job of moving the random cabinetry into non-random places!!
Sweet! I'm amazed and INSPIRED! You rock and your blog is now on my subscription list!
Get out! That's beautiful!
That is awesome!!
One thing, though--were the footprints all perfect enough not to disrupt your wood flooring, or did you have to have some stained to match and put in various "holes"?
All I can say is Wowzers!! That looks marvelous. What I would give to have your creative mind!
YOU GUYS ARE GENIUS!!! That turned out so flippin' great! (and that's about as strong as my language gets :)!). Maybe she put all her piles in that third sink?
And I think I may still be posting as Kim (I'm standing in for her this week), but it's really Jennifer P.--although it is kind of fun to cruise around blogland as someone else....
Again-- amazing!
This is just gorgeous! Love the stainless steel fridge!
MUCH better! I probably would've walked in the house & walked right back out, just KNOWING there was no way I could get around the w/d in the kitchen. I lack a little in "big picture" vision.
Looks great!
Wowza! That looks sooo much better. You've really done a great job with that house! Thanks for showing us the before and afters.

I love it. So creative. The kitchen looks like it was intended to be the way you have it. It had to have been crying for you before you moved in. Like it's arm had been sticking out it's belly button until you arrived and set things right.
Bravo! Looks fantastic!
How wonderful it is to have menfolk capable of doing those kinds of DIY projects! They rawk don't they? Mine is handy like that so I know what a blessing it is. I love your kitchen. I think that third sink was probably for soaking things, remember 20 years ago they did a lot of that, lol, I don't know, maybe... you have a lovely home and I can't wait to see the rest!
I still can't believe you just used the existing cabinets. How perfect! It looks fabulous!
That turned out beautifully. It really did look like an awkward kitchen but y'all did a great job making it a nicely functional space and I can't believe you just used the cabinets that were already there and it worked!!!
Thanks for the encouragement in the kitchen!
k- you are right, there were "holes" in the wood flooring. But we were lucky because we were able to piece all that together as well - taking floor that was under the third sink to match the floor where we took out the random cabinet in the bfast area. We didn't have to find/match any new floor, but we did have to fill in crown molding and baseboard/shoe molding. But it was minor.
Bramblerry - I laughed out loud at your comment. You are so right, it was like the kitchen had an arm coming out of its belly button. HA!
The kitchen re-do is nothing short of wonderful!
Fantabulous! If you had not had that random pantry cabinet you might of been in trouble. It looks awesome! I love that backsplash!
Well, ding-a-ding-dong! Great job putting together that puzzle! It looks like the kitchen was made to be that way.
So I get the prep sink in the island, but what was the purpose of the one behind the door?
And you neglected to mention the new countertops and new faucets! Beautiful!
That is great! Much more logical. Don't you love it when projects work out so well.
I love love love your before and after pictures. It's so fun to see what you've done with your house. Does your husband do all of these renovations himself? Or do you hire a crew?
My husband is a marvelous, talented, strong and capable man. And I love him. He is my hero.
We hired a crew.
So genius! I bet those men don't read your blog so you soooo could have taken credit for it! :) This looks really great! I love your granite, backsplash and fixtures especially!!
may i come live with you?....seriously.
no seriously
(i have no job and am about to lose my apartment....) sounds like a great time to move into the most beautiful house in the world...chatting at the sky, you are amazing! (and have great taste)
(if people read this and don't know we are friends, i sound REALLY stalker crazy)
All those puzzle we did in kindergarted really were for a reason. It totally helps in kitchen redos. Brilliant. And the best part was that everything actually fit. It looks like everything was originally planned like that.
And who has three sinks??? That is just more spots for dirty things to collect. Now it looks like a kitchen and not a multipurpose room. Great job.
That looks awesome!! It always amazes me the vision that some have. I think I just might cook it I had a kitchen like that!!
Emily - this all looks so great! it is really fun to watch the transformation of your house :)
It looks so great!!! counter space is so much better than sinks galore.
can't wait to see you tomorrow!
your house is so nice. I cannot believe how nice and easy you made it look.
I tried moving stuff around...my cabinets would most likey fall apart.
I did not even think that was possible.
C'mon, how could you NOT want THREE sinks? I think those tiny people really did their laudry by hand. In the sink.
Your jig-saw transformation looks good. Really, really good. I'm still puzzling over how to make my house feel like it has 1,000 extra square feet without selling all our furniture and buying a new house. Or selling the children.
I'll bet that extra sink was for laundry needs, but why not (for the tinies) use the, you know, laundry room?
Wow. What an amazing "after"! Could you share your kitchen paint color, backsplash and countertop choices with us?
This looks like it has always been this way. It should have always been this way. I love the way it turned out.
We (well, my husband) moved a couple cabinets in our kitchen to help the flow and it looks so much better.
Tell your men, they did a great job! -- Brandi
Wendy and anyone else interested: I just updated the post and added the names of the granite and paint color.
wow...it looks incredible. so creative. there is just way too much of that in your family. would you mind sharing some????
oh no the jealousy bug is starting to creep in...stop it, bug stop it!
no seriously, I love your home!! I love love love it! :)
love you too! :)
the kitchen looks great. very pretty.
(i'm kind of embarrassed that i knew what your counter tops were before you told. Its in my blood.)
Wow! You've got a great spacial eye. So resourceful too. It has a much better flow now and is much prettier! The new lighter counters and backsplash make it look so much brighter & airy. Now, what are you going to cook in your beautiful kitchen?!
What a great transformation, and no purchase of new cabinets! 3 sinks, and 1 behind the door is just bizarro!
that is absolutely amazing!! It's as if it was suppose to be that way {originally!}
Love your kitchen makeover!! It is beautiful.
OMG! What an improvement. Now you're cooking!
And three sinks? That makes as much sense as my washer and dryer being in my garage with no inside entrance to the garage.
Some Kosher families have different things for different foods:
more than one sink
2 sets of dishes designed for each food
stuff like that :)
That may not be the reason for this house though :)
That looks so incredible! It looks like how it SHOULD look! Great job!!
You are a puzzle-working genius. You would never know the previous life! Loved your sink Twister game! Ha!
