The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory

I just watched the season 1 dvd of this new sitcom comedy and I was instantly hooked. Its that good. Sitcoms are not so much about writing or jokes and such but more about the chemistry of all the actors in the show and how they play against each other.

The Big Bang Theory is about 2 genius nerds who are roommates, and then a pretty waitress moves in next to them. Rounding out the cast are 2 more nerd friends who are constantly at the apartment. Sound dull? Well, try explaining Frasier or Friends or Seinfeld.

The Big Bang Theory is all about the actors, the awesome acting and excellent script. With each episode you watch, you get more and more into the characters and the show. And being a nerd myself, not only am I not insulted, I find myself charmed by the way they are portrayed. To make things even more fun, they have actual factual physics/math/science Easter eggs throughout the show.

Knight Rider - TV Review

Just watched the premiere of Knight Rider last night and I really have to comment on just HOW BAD IT WAS. They did a 2 hour pilot of this show over a year ago and were met with a very luke warm reception from the audience. Even the most staunch Knight Rider gave it an ok, most others (me included) had less than favorable things to say about it.

For some unknown reason, this show is now making its debut and you would think that after a year to retool the show and make it better, there would be some redeeming qualities about it. You would be wrong.

PLOT/WRITING
The biggest problem with this show is the writing/plot. That entire first show was about showing off the car (understandable) and some action scenes, with a paper thin plot line about Micheal's mysterious history which he can't remember and seems to be the main focus of the show for at least the next few episodes.

OH MY GOD!!! Have these asshats seen recent shows? Burn Notice? Chuck? Heck even Jake 2.0 had better plot lines. The entire first episode was all about showing off how much $$$ they could spend on special effects and make the plot fit into the action scenes. Where's the intelligent or witty conversations, where's the scenes which make Michael seem cool? where's the plot that even The Love Boat had a better grasp on?

THE CAR
This is the 21st century. We've seen a hell of a lot of special effects and are very spoilt. We expect all TV shows to have movie quality effects. KITT (the car) is supposed to be the main emphasis of the show, and it FAILS!!! I am not a car person and even I thought the original KITT from the 80's was a cool car. There is NOTHING cool about the current KITT. Its a car has a "superior" AI and some gadgets included as well. Did no one think that perhaps liquid metal might be a better idea? A car that can morph into other vehicles (with some limitations), or a hover/flying ability, or SOMETHING cool. Something we have not seen before.

But no, this car's emblem changes from a "snake" in normal form into a cobra when its in attack mode. It has a very annoying AI voice which does not seem to be any smarter than the original KITT which is very bad given that its been 30 years and we have super dumb lines like "you can't feel KITT, you're a computer". Michael actually said that line to KITT in the show. Its like this guy has never seen any TV shows like TERMINATOR or Matrix or Battlestar Galactica, in today's world, we expect our AI to be very much more than human and we expect our heroes to be more intelligent than to say a line like that.

SIDEKICKS
OH LORD. Again, did they hire the casting director and writers from 1980? In this decade we like our sidekicks smart, fun and having the ability to carry the show or play off the main cast. Take a note from "The Big Bang Theory", "Will and Grace", "Prison Break", "Burn Notice", "Eureka".

You know what this show has? A nerdy but brainy person who is their tech guy that everyone seems to look down on and faints at the sight of blood. A hot asian chick who constantly spouts one-liners and loves to tease the nerdy guy. And a black female FBI agent who has an attitude problem and makes you want to smack her.

Super bland, one dimensional sidekicks that we've seen from the 1980's. I'll admit that some current shows also suffer from one dimensional sidekicks, but they usually have other redeeming qualities.

EYE CANDY

Knight Rider is an action show. And as such it needs eye candy. The 2 main leads of the show are Deanna Russo and Justin Bruening, Now I think the girls are fairly hot, but I'm not exactly a good judge on that department. I can however comment on Justin Bruening.

15 mins into the show there is a scene where both of them need to undress in the car at high speed because KITT was just hit by a missile and was now burning on the outside (liquid) nalpham and the temperature was rising fast inside. (I kid you not, this was the actual plot - Like taking off your clothes in the confines of a car helps any in this situation).

Don't get me wrong, I would kill for a body like Justin Bruening. But on a action TV star, his body is a B-. Wentworth Miller in Prison Break, Jeffrey Donovan in Burn Notice, Robert Buckley in Lipstick Jungle. Those are hot men that fans fantasize about, build websites and web shrines to and constantly scour the internet for shirtless pics for. I've seen some very hot photos of Justin on the web but perhaps he should have hit the gym before taking off his shirt for his "BIG BREAK".

To sum up, what does this show have going for it? ... ... ... ... Hmmmm... it does have high production values which all prime time shows have.

Don't even bother to acknowledge the existence of this remake.

Oliver: I'd do anything for you

There are tons of reality TV shows and a recent variation is to have the winners star in an upcoming live musical. For example Grease which I blogged about last year.

In the UK, they are currently doing one called "Oliver: I'd do anything for you" and obviously the winners will star as Oliver and Nancy in the live West End Oliver. What blows me away is that Oliver is a boy about 8-12 years old and these boys in the contest are so amazing!!! They obviously have to go through dance lessons, voice lessons every single day. At that age, all I wanted to do was watch TV and read comics.

Sigh... sadly I have to torrent the show because its only available in the UK, and they are most probably not releasing the DVD. Check out the youtube video of all the boys.

Eli Stone

One of the most fun new TV series this season is Eli Stone. It has not gotten much publicity because its different, but very very fun.

The show is about a very successful lawyer called Eli Stone who discovers that he has a brain tumor. A side effect of this tumor is that he see and hears visions. In the first few episodes its mostly musical numbers which are pretty darn funny, and in all cases we find that there's a greater meaning to the visions.

The whole series is pretty funny, I highly recommend this series to everyone. I hope that it makes it to a season 2. Here's a few clips from the first few episodes.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Revisited

Last Night was the finale of season 1 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Because of the writers strike, season 1 is only 9 episodes, but I loved every one of them.

If you're looking for a big loud shoot them up with tons of explosions then you're gonna be disappointed. This series is less about explosions (although there are many) and more focused on story/plot.

I loved the series and especially the episode where we got a glimpse of what the future was like. Human living in sewers praying that Skynet would not find them, rebels engaging the cyborgs. I also love that we don't know if Cameron will eventually be the start of skynet. There are some hints of darker things to come but nothing concrete yet.

Everyone of the cast is superb, I had reservations about Brian Austin Green (of 90210 fame) initially but he's turning out to be a strong character. The only person I dislike is the FBI agent James Ellison. I'm still not sure about his motivation and where he stands in the whole battle, but if the finale doesn't put him on Sarah's side, then he's a lost cause.

I highly recommend The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I hope they will somehow tie this series into the upcoming Movie Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins due out in 2009 and starring Christian Bale as the grown up John Conner. But for right now, Terminator is alive and well.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Just saw the first 2 episodes of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. This show is AWESOME!!! The story picks up mostly after the movie Terminator 2 and John is 15 years old.

*** Spoilers ***

The writing so far is top notch! I won't give out too many spoilers but as you can see from the picture below, they did some Time Travel. Summer Glau is the new Terminator, (the good one) and she rocks, you might remember her from Firefly. I also like the new John Connor (Thomas Dekker) and I don't hate the new Sarah Connor (Lena Headey).

My only concern is where the storyline will be going, but so far its good. Basically, they thought Skynet was destroyed but then a new Terminator is sent to kill John. They decide to travel from 1999 to 2007 to find the roots of the new Skynet and prevent the coming destruction of the world in 2011.

The show might be about 10 years late but I like what I've seen so far and I'm hooked. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a must watch for all Terminator and Sci Fi fans out there.

Dancing with the Stars - 2007

This will be the first time I'm watching Dancing with the Stars, it never caught on with me, so why watch it this season? The Stars. I LOVE many of this season's stars, Marie Osmond=, Jane Seymour, Jennie Garth, and Cameron Mathison.

And I'm so glad I caught it, the first week's dance was AWESOME!!!! As long as my favorites are still around I'll be a faithful watcher.

Marie Osmond - Ohhh I loved how fun she made the dance, she truly knows how to play the audience.

Jane Seymour - She is elegance personified!

Jennie Garth - Oh she's so damn sweet. I love watching her.

Sabrina Bryan - no idea who she was but her dance was by FAR the best. It really impressed me.

Cameron Mathison - I've always had a soft spot for Cameron. Can you blame me?

Albert Reed - No idea who he is but DAMN!!! That first cha cha was HOT HOT HOT.

TV Review - Doctor Who - Season 3

FINALLY!!! SciFi channel has shown the 1st episode of Dr. Who Season 3. David Tennant's back and his new sidekick is Freema Agyeman.
For those of you who thought that Dr. Who was a little too "light" and not serious enough you'll want to keep tuned for Season 3. In particular episode 9 "The Family of Blood", and episode 11 - 13 "Utopia / The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords". You want drama? You'll get it in spades! And Captain Jack's back for episode 11 - 13.

Yessir! I've already seen the entire series online and it is the best season of Dr Who yet, I'll still tune in to SciFi Friday's because watching Dr. Who online isn't quite the same as watching it on a full length TV.

Oh and here's a little spoiler. Dr. Who's getting a new companion for Season 4. Its Catherine Tate who played Donna the bride in the Christmas Special. As for Freema, all we know right now is that she'll join up again mid-season 4. No confirmation yet if she's only guest starring or will continue on as a companion.

PS. Torchwood (The Spinoff starring Captain Jack) is coming to BBC America on September 8th!

Doctor Who Gets Fourth Season

The BBC series Doctor Who has been renewed for a fourth season, the BBC announced at a special preview screening in London this week.

The third season of the new Doctor Who, which will begin airing in the UK on March 31, sees the return of David Tennant as the Doctor but with new campanion Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman. Agyeman replaces the tenth Doctor’s original sidekick Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). The show’s executive producer Russell T. Davies did not say whether Tennant will return for the fourth season, which is set to air in 2008.

Doctor Who is seen in the United States on the SciFi Channel, which will air season three episodes this summer.

At the preview screening of the first two episodes of season three, it was confirmed that John Simm, who plays time-traveling cop Sam Tyler in the BBC series Life on Mars, will guest-star in the final two episodes of the third season. Simm will play a mysterious politician known as Mr. Saxon.

I love Dr. Who and I simply love David Tennant's performance. The last 2 episodes of Season 2 were sooo good. While I had reservations about them 'killing' off Rose's character, its a very good way of ensuring new blood into a series and allowing it to remain fresh.

Anyway, I can't wait for Season 3 to air.

Grease You're the one that I want

I've followed Grease You're the one that I want since it first premiered back in January 7, 2007. For the uninformed, this is a reality contest much like American Idol. The twist is that the winners of this contest will be in the revival of Grease on Broadway which opens this summer 2007. So after winning the contest, the winners of Danny and Sandy will have almost no time before they have to appear on Broadway which in itself takes months of intense practice and rehearsals.

Its been a really fun journey of seeing all the open casting calls and seeing the final 14 Danny's and Sandy's selected. And from there the elimination process until the final 2 winners were chosen on Sunday 25th March 2007.

As I said I've followed this show religiously. And I've had a definite favorite. Austin Miller. I've even been calling in every week to make sure that he wins. All that ended last week. It was the first time I didn't call in. The reason is that I could not decide between Austin or Max.

Let me give you a little lowdown. Austin is dubbed "HOT Danny". He's gorgeous, muscled and talented. Even from Day 1, it was obvious that he had tons more training and talent than just about all the other guys. Plus, I had seen Austin when he was starring as Link in Hairspray and I LOVED him. Then there's Max, dubbed "Slacker Danny". This guy did a COMPLETE 360. If you compare him on day 1 in open casting call and in the final showdown, he's a completely different person. You literally see his transformation every single week and I'll say this for him. He will never be labeled a hunk, he looks like a teenager, he's skinny and basically looks like a nerd, but part way thru the series you see an amazing transformation. And when he sings, you literally see how damn good and talented he is. You can envision him being Danny. His singing and acting skills are phenomenal.

Needless to say the audience was equally separated. Among the girls Laura was the definite favorite and she won. She had that wholesome innocent look and was also able to transform into a hot Sandy. For the Guys, there was only a 1% margin separating Austin and Max. Max won and is will now play Danny on Broadway.

I'm very glad for him. From day 1 he was the underdog, but I have to say that he didn't win based on Sympathy votes. He truly was better between the singing showdowns against Austin. The only downside is that he looks scrawny, but then again with daily gym time and his amazing singing/acting, I think people will be able to accept him as Danny, Leader of the T-birds.
Now my big decision is should I plan a trip to New York later this year? Hmmmm....

A Clip of one of Max's best Solo.

Compare this with one of Austin's best Solo.

Showdown between Max and Austin

Presenting the new Danny and Sandy!!!

Heroes

Have you seen this show? Its called Heroes and its the new Lost. Let's face it, Lost was an awesome show in its first season but season 2 & 3 were dragging. So in comes some new blood with this show called Heroes.

Its premise? 10 individuals discover that they have super powers. Is it the product of an experiment? are they alliens? Nope. They are the crowning achievement of mother nature, they are what we will eventially evolve to if given the chance.

Oh... did I mention that the end of the world is coming as well and that only they can save us all? Its not as cheesy as it sounds, the cast is excellient, the writing somber and dark and grips you and pulls you in week after week. I'm in love with this show.
This guys is Masi Oka, or more familiar is his character in Heroes (Hiro Nakamura). He's dorky, he bumbling, he's not pretty, but of everyone in the cast, he's the one person you want to watch! He literally steals the screen when he's on. His power in the show is the ability to bend time.

Oh and here's a little titbit, in real life, Masi Oka is a programmer. FOR ILM!!!! Indistrial Light and Magic!!!! The same company that George Lukas founded. Here's a very interesting article by Wired about him. After all, how many nerdy programmers do you know end up on Prime Time Television!

GO OKA!!!! NERDS RULE.

Ugly Betty

Have you seen this show? Its awesome! Enough about the pretty people. Betty Suarez is just like you and me, she's not pretty or super smart or rich. She's got everyday problems and insecurities like and me but she's got pluck and determination. Its SO good to see the underdog win for a change.

Catch the first episode on abc.com. I'm so hooked on this show.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

I tape a lot of shows through out the week and then have a binge TV weekend. Hence, I'm usually later than most with reviews on how good or bad a particular show is.

I had heard lots of good things about Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip but to be honest, I was not very pumped up on it. The cut scenes and such just didn't make it seem that great.

But after watching the full pilot of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip I was totally blown away. It is hands down THE BEST pilot I've ever had the pleasure of watching. If you're a fan of West Wing, watch this show. If you like intelligent and fast speaking shows with quirky humor, watch this show.

Shows like KyleXY and Stargate SG1 which if you read my blog you know I gush over them and think the world of them. But they are guilty pleasures. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip like West Wing are shows that will actually challenge you and WOW you.

I can't explain how good this show is. Its just something you have to take on faith and just sit down and watch the pilot. Aaron Sorkin is a genius and ha the ability to make any subject matter he writes about engaging. (I hate politics and yet I loved the episodes of West Wing that he wrote). They cannot pay him enough.

My Labor day

How did you spend Labor day? I spent my day watching a marathorn of the show Top Chef on Bravo.

It is hands down one of the best reality shows I've seen in along while. Why? Because of the final episode, I was literally on the edge of my seat rooting for Harold. The showdown between the 2 top contenders was Harold, the nice guy that everyone loved, and the uber bitch that everyone hated. Both good cooks, but seriously, when the 4 sou-chef's who are helping you prep the final meal all choose Harold to win, there is something seriously wrong with your personality.
This is Harold, and he even has his own Myspace page. He won a spread in Food and Wine magazine, a top of the line professional kitchen and $100k to help start his own restaurant. Grats Harold!!!
This is Tiffani, the uber bitch who keeps saying she's here to win, not make friends. Well Tiff, being a bitch came back to bite you big time. On the final challenge, they brought in the previous 4 contenders who were eliminated who would help the chef's prepare their meals. Hands down all 4 of them wanted to work with Harold. Sometimes the good guys do win :)
This is Lee Anne. I think everyone was rooting for her and Harold to do the showdown. Both excellent chefs and solid people whom you would want to work with. Sadly she was eliminated.

Kyle XY - My vote for best show of 2006

I know it might be a little presumptious to crown KyleXY as the best new TV series when fall is right round the corner and there's a bunch of new shows premiering. But I LOVE this show.

Its story and character driven, its got a great cast, and Matt Dallas has my vote for best newcomer. It might be a little touchy feely for some but remember this series is being broadcast by ABC Family, not one of those major networks.

In case you're unfamiliar with the series, it revolves around this boy (about 16 years old) who wakes up in the middle of the forest, naked and with no memory. Everything is new to him including speech. He's taken in by a social worker and her family and the story develops.

At the series conclusion of 9 episodes which aired on Monday, we're left with a cliffhanger. Kyle finally get's some answers and why people are after him.

Here are some of my fave scenes from the series:

How it all Started

Kyle gets some sleep

Kyle Finds a family

Kyle the Superhero

Kyle loses his temper

Kyle refuses to leave his family

A Sob moment

"Stargate: SG-1" Gets Cancelled

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOB SOB SOB!

Sadly its true. This season 10 is the last for SG1. Its the current champion for longest running SciFi series in America. Last Friday was its' 200th episode which means there's only 15 more episodes before the end.

I love this series and have followed it religiously since its beginning. Not just because its a great Scifi show but also because it holds sentimental value to me. I started working in July 1997, fresh from college, on my own and alone for the first time. The first episode of Stargate SG1 aired on 27 July 1997. Its been one of the constants in my life for the past 10 years.

Ah well. My hope now is that the final episode really ROCKS! Let's get a few people ascended! Oh and just cos it might actually work I'm signing a few online petitions and all the like. Got to support my fave TV Show. Here's an awesome Save Stargate video.

TV Addict

Well since summer TV is SUCH a huge disappointment as usual (except for abcFamily with Kyle XY) here some titbits on the fall programs:

*** spoilers abound - be warned ****
=======================================================
Smallville

Jimmy Olsen comes a knocking and you know him as.... Iceman from Xmen. Actually its his twin, Aaron Ashmore. But they both look very... twin like. And little Jimmy might get chummy with Chloe.

Ohhh and word on the street is there is gonna be a new pivotal comic book char coming to town. No word on who yet but... who's the most pivotal comic character to Superman? Hmmm.... could it be a bat?

=======================================================
Gilmore Girls

The first 6 episodes are going to be very, very, very dramatic for Luke and Lorelai. Well what did you expect ?!?! She slept with her ex in the fanale after having a big out with Luke. Personally I hated that little twist, its so un-Lorelai.

=======================================================
Veronica Mars

Well, Miss Mars is getting a new love interest called Piz in Season 3. I say good! Imagine the horror of thinking that your boyfriend whom you thought raped you also happened to be your brother!!! I don't care if it turned out to be false, you can't tell me the relationship won't change.

=======================================================
Supernatural

Remember the cliffhanger? Did daddykins die? Here's the straight scoop from series creator Eric Kripke himself (warning: you're just inches away from a major spoiler about last May's cliff-hanger; proceed at your own peril): "We will introduce a new set of 'hunters' this season a mom and her daughter, who will be about the same age as the Winchester boys. John will definitely have survived the car crash, he’s alive and well, and he’ll soon have a face-to-face confrontation with the demon."

=======================================================
Nip/Tuck

Sigh.... I love Julian. but this is one of those shows that I have to catch on DVD mostly cos I can't remember which channel FX is on.

Anyway, Mario Lopez (Dr. Mike) is a new character coming to the show and he's... gonna be of special sexual interest to Christian!!!! Gasp!!! Is Christian gonna branch out and explore the other side of the road? No such luck, basically, Christian meets him at the gym, and while in the locker room he observes and subsequently covets Dr. Mike's stunningly perfect physique. Methinks it's the start of a whole midlife crisis for Julian McMahon's aging alter ego.

Still... Julian and Mario in a locker room, 1/2 dressed and sweaty? That's more than worth the price of the DVD for me.

=======================================================
Las Vegas

This show was tops in Season 1, and season 2 felt very flat, but the fanale really picked up I think. Its a guilty pleasure show.

Danny and Delinda spend much of this coming season's second episode having sex, so I guess things don't work out well for her and Shawn Christian. In the same episode, Montecito's employees are forced to attend a sexual-harassment seminar, and Mary used the opportunity to publicly condemn Danny for dipping his pen in company ink.

Still sounds kinda flat but if they keep their late night time slot... there' really no competition.

=======================================================
Battlestar Galactica

Everyone wants to know when when when!!! But Sci Fi won't give say anything more specific than October.

But here's a scoop. Exec producer David Eick says that a major character will be killed off in the third episode? Well, one of my mole's friend's sister's roommates happened upon the set a few weeks ago and noticed the entire cast was present except for one person — a woman. You do the math.

=======================================================
High School Musical 2

Ok this isn't a fall TV series. But I'm including it cos my nephew and niece LOVE the show. There is a part 2 and here's the plot.

"School's out for summer and some of East High School's favorite class are working summer jobs, others lolling around the pool at the Albuquerque Country Club and Golf Course where Ryan and Sharpay's family have been members for years. When Troy Bolton lands a summer gig as a lifeguard at the pool, can a talent-show competition be in the future? Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Lucas Grabeel are confirmed to reprise their roles."

=======================================================
Stargate SG1/Atlantis

Mitchell (Ben Browder) is going to be attending his high-school reunion, where he'll bump into an old crush. Of course, their reunion-within-a-reunion will be interrupted by the arrival of a humanoid bounty hunter who intends on capturing Mitchell and using him as bait in "a larger game."

Its not much but the SUPER GOOD NEWS is that it premieres this Friday!!!!! As in TOMORROW!!!! 14th July 2006, remember to tune in.

=======================================================
Grey's Anatomy

Chris O'Donnell is in talks to increase his Season 3 episode order from two to six. I so hope thi happens. I love Chris O'Donnell. I mean McSteamy is nice but... come on, if the guy can't make up his mind and stick with 1 choice, screw him and go for the cute Vet.

=======================================================
Desperate Housewives

Nicollette Sheridan, the bad girl of Wisteria lane is gonna get a hot 18-year-old nephew named Austin! OMG I hope he's as big a slut as hi Aunt.

And Susan get's a new love interest and they're thinking of making him British. Make his british and built and I predict that you'll have a HUGE following for season 3. Oh and what about poor Mr. Mike who got hit by the nasty dentist? Hmmm... not sure if I really care actually. The writers made his character pretty undesirable if you ask me.

=======================================================
Well that's all I had. And thanks to AskAusiello for the scoops. I basically plagurized his columns for the past few weeks to write this blog entry.

Eureka

This is one of the new TV show premieres that I'm really looking forward to. Its on the SciFi Channel. Visit the official site for more info.
Nestled in the Pacific Northwest, Eureka is a seemingly ordinary town whose residents lead ordinary lives … at least to the naked eye. Shrouded in secrecy, the picturesque hamlet is actually a community of scientific geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research

Watch the promo for the show below:

Oh and I think Colin Ferguson is cute. He looked familiar but he's mostly done bit parts up till now.

New Futurama in 2008

This just in from Darkhorizons. WOOT!!!! Nerds Rejoice!!!! **breaks out the champagne**

Comedy Central plans to resurrect the Fox animated series "Futurama" with at least 13 new episodes to be produced.

Running from 1999-2003, the show created by "Simpsons" originator Matt Groening ran for 72 episodes and yielded a large and loyal cult audience which has resulted in solid DVD sales and good ratings for repeat episodes on cable.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

Kyle XY

This is a new TV series called Kyle XY. It airs 26th June 2006 on ABC. Its about a boy who has no memory of his past and has strange abilities. Plus, no belly button. I'm hooked for at least the first 2 episodes.

See the preview for yourself.
