Easy Frenchie Toast (Shauna's kitchen)

Printed out a good looking recipe for Baked French Toast. HOWEVER, it was WAY complicated and it was right after church so the troop was hungry (like a herd of hippos) so I just used the majority of the ingredients, threw caution to the wind and came up with this. Brannon says it was so good that I needed to write it down (although lets face it folks, he's a walking garbage disposal and kindly says he likes anything I made) nevertheless, it was easy and quick and I think it will be my go-to recipe.

Frenchie Toast
1 loaf french bread (sliced nice and thick) I CAN'T emphasize enough that the thicker your bread, the BETTER your french toast will be. Brioche is also a nice kind of bread for french toast.
6 eggs
1 cup milk
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 Tbsp. vanilla
1/4 c. butter (melted and divided in two)
2/3 c. brown sugar (I recommend using dark).

Preheat frying pan on medium heat w/ HALF of the melted butter. Whisk eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, HALF of the melted butter, and brown sugar. Dip bread slices into the egg mixture and fry til golden brown on each side (a few minutes each). Top w/ whipped cream, caramel, coconut syrup (let me know if you want the recipe), sugared pecans, or fruit- which ever fills your fancy.

Oh yeah and I HALFED the whole recipe, it was perfect for 2 adults and 2 kids who like to eat.

FB status (Just in case my adult children wonder what I did all day)

Facebook Statuses since Jan 2012

January:
Rio, what do bad guys get for Christmas? Hiccups.

Oh 4 o'clock witching hour, when my kids spiral out of control and dinner needs to be cooked- I have not missed you AT ALL! In fact. I hate you. . . . back to the grind (p.s. why are my kids angels while on vacation? I'd rather have it the other way around). Also, I still love my kids a lot in case you were worried, I just don't like them very much at this instant.

The beach does a person gooooood!

Season 2 of Downton Abbey!!!! Eeeeeeek -girlish squeal! (If you haven't seen it, you must, mostly if you claim to be a woman). Season 1 is also online:

Anyone have an exer-saucer they wouldn't mind lending to me for a couple months?

I love Sunday.

Getting excited for Valentine's day!

Having the best day, rained in with my kids. I am one lucky mom

Where should we go on family vacation in May? There are so many possibilities that it is paralyzing. The theme is relaxation/pool/tan/will be good with small children.

Sometimes I feel like venting bad/disappointing things on facebook but then I think about people actually commenting on my personal disparaging feelings and that is probably worse. I want to live in reality and complain to Angie Call Nielsen tomorrow- hehe.

Sometimes things you know for sure can be lost without action.

Belize calls the samples at Costco, "examples". We had grapefruit juice a couple weeks ago and I've been craving it ever since. . . . so I bought 2 gallons. Thank you Costco- its the little things.

Trying so hard to catch up on blogging but I'm haven't even gotten to Christmas yet :(

February:
So I guess I'm not getting mother of the year award? (Forgot to bring a flower for the community bouquet for the teacher's birthday AND was 45 minutes late to pick up from a field trip).

If you say "gullible" slowly it sounds like "oranges."
"There is reason for everyone to be unhappy. There is reason for everyone to be happy. What's your focus?" -Kelle Hampton (love that girl!)

Rio: Mom, you're fired.
Me: Okay, you can just do the mom things then.
Rio: But I don't have fire in my blood.
Me: Fire in your blood?
Rio: Like a firefighter.

Cutest swimsuit EVERRRRRRRRRR!!!!

No person has "it all". They place value on certain things and sacrifice others.

I really want to call in sick to work today. Also, I need a new head.

A bad attitude is like a flat tire- you can't go anywhere til you change it.

Combating a bad attitude- trying to fight the good fight for the sake of - well - everyone.

Remember during highschool when not having a Valentine was the most depressing thing ever? Rio asked Belize to be his Valentine this year and it reminded me of all those years when my brother stepped up too. Thanks Kyle Gregg for being the best brother EVER! You are pretty much epic.

A successful marriage is about two people engaged and dedicated to overcoming selfishness--for the rest of their lives - Courtney Kendrick

The kids are at a playdate (all of them!- thanks Ang!) so I'm rolling up my sleeves for cupcakes and listening to MoTab. Blissful (and QUIET) afternoon.

Still feels magical when a baby falls asleep in my arms.

When Bro and I were dating he called me "Baby Girl". Then we had a baby girl, then it was weird. Haven't had a nickname since.

March:
Just want to run down the street like a psycho yelling "I LOVE CALIFORNIA WEATHER!!!!!!! at the top of my lungs. Good good day!

The ONE day a year that my kids sleep until 7:00, I can't enjoy it because I'm trying to catch up on an hour of missed sleep. CURSE YOU Daylight savings!!!!!

Fresh and easy is sooooo fun, picked up some ready to make meals that actually do look fresh. Produce was not so hot. And on a side note- Belize broke a bottle of wine, had a meltdown, then Mayan had a meltdown and had to suck on a wine-soaked binky (yes, I did the "lick clean" but it still smelled of alcohol)- whew!

Oh man, I got it so bad. Rio snuggles his body close to mine, looks up at me with those big charming eyes and says in a sweet voice, "Mommy, can I pleeeeease watch Wibert Wobert Word (Ribbert Robert's world)? I will love you forever!!!" Then he proceeds to flash a handsome smile and blinks his looooong eyelashes. Pitter patter my heart. I have got it bad!

Match day! Seems like so long ago . . . can't wait for "found a job day!!!"

And I promise I will not eat sweets this week. (I've been on overload lately).

I DID just get on the computer for the 1st time and my house IS clean? Coincident? hehe

One more step to becoming my mother, something I swore I'd never do- considering matching outfits for the kids pictures. It is SO uncool but dang it, the outfits are so cute!!!!! and so matchy!!!!!  (to update this, I never did get those matching outfits- SEE I am so a cool mama- hahahaa)

I love the pinterest WAY tOO much

Live in such a way that if that if anyone should speak badly of you, no one would believe it. (something to aspire to)

April:
Rio, while playing table tennis on the Wii- "This guy is too hard, that's why I'm letting him win!" Isn't he a nice guy? Also, Mayan is now eating Cheerios (for some reason this feels like a really big deal)!!

Your Beliefs don't make you a better person, your Behavior does.

My heart is grateful today. Thinking of my older brother.

Broken camera (4th one in 3 years)= no cute Easter pictures. :(

Lil' B: "Stop trippin' Mom, start whippin' and CHILL OUT!"

According to my kids, when you lose on the Wii, you get buzzled.-haha I love these kids. Spring Break - WHOOOOOOO! ( Belize has officially asked me to stop screaming Whoooo, I guess its embarrassing or something?)

Blogging occurring right now. Richelle Walton Marie Hawkins Dixon stop slacking, I need some companial (pretty sure I just made this word up) motivation!

Getting down to Business (trip)

Dad had his first business trip to LA in 3 years!  Whoot!  We met up with him at his hotel in Huntington beach- the kids were super stoked to see him but were a little confused, as they kept asking where Nana was.
The Hyatt had some really cool, kid appropriate pools and waterslides (oh, except when Rio pulled a fast one and went down the biggest slide while Grandpa was waiting at the little slide to catch him).  Thank you lifeguard for pulling him out- what was he thinking?
Mayan took a liking to Grandpa (rare these days- the likings), and was content to splash him in the face as long as he was holding her.
 Love my Dad!
That's some fashionable posing right there, Belize.

I was going to save this pic for a post on some of Rio's awesomeness but I just couldn't wait.  Isn't he awesome?  I call it the Froggy.
Grandpa got to stay for Easter morning.  Dad, why couldn't I get your beautiful blue eyes?  Thanks MOM. Just kidding Mom, your eyes are real purdy.
The Ortons sent some new V-tech books for the kids, which were a huge hit!  I'm pretty sure Rio is saying something like, "Belite, you got a long tun and now I get a tun!"
 Love this picture!

Getting Easter ready with 3 kids was a challenge. Injuries, meltdowns, and chocolate on dress-shirt ensued.  To top it all off, when we finally got to church and were ready to have our picture taken, the camera took one for the team in hand-off (if you were keeping track, that's 4 cameras in 3 years).  And we never did get that Easter perfect picture (I remember the ones from my childhood so well, kid gloves and hat included).  Also,2 days later our blender broke, again, except this time it really died.
Oh well, here are Belize's curls (which she ASKED for!) as a Easter consolation prize.

Lemonade Stand

Bri had a birthday!  We went to her party of course!
 It was pretty cold.
But that didn't seem to deter the hoopla!
HE DID NOT KNOW that this leaf was up his nose- seriously!  The reason I noticed was because the girl next to him kept looking at him- with a grossed-out face.  Awesomeness.
Tulita Elementary kids collected change to help Wheels for Humanity, an international group that refurbishes wheelchairs for those in need.  The kids and I baked cookies and VOILA!  They were only out for 40 minutes and earned 4 dollars, sold 11 cookies and had the time of their lives!
 Anticipating a walk by.
 SO EXCITED!
Just had to include this pic because of Belize's sneaky look.  And yes, Rio kept trying to take the cookies.
We got one folks!  Actually the best part of this whole thing was watching Rio's aggressive sales tactics.  He would flag/run a person down 2 blocks away and yell, "Do you wanna buy a cookie!!!!"  And then repeated yelling until the person reached the stand, where Rio would jammer on about what it was for in his broken adorable English.  They would just look at him like, "You're so stinkin' cute, but I can't understand a word you're saying."  Then if they didn't have any money, Rio would continue to run after them, yelling, again, "Do you wanna buy a cookie!!"  As if maybe they hadn't heard him the first time.  It was hilarious!

Heavenly sisters

The other night, I was snuggling Belize to sleep; she put her face close to mind.  "Belize, guess what?" "What?" she answered.  "Did you know that before we came to earth- we were sisters?" I inquired.  Belize's face lit up with pure joy- priceless.  "Really?"  "Yeah."  Then she held her nose close to mine, and we snuggled some more until she drifted off to sleep.

Girl can sing now, rock back and forth on all fours and hasn't met a solid food she hasn't liked.
Mom, correct me if I'm wrong, didn't you wear this dress too?

LOVE this face!  Like she just saw a mouse- eek!

The everydays

Classic reading a book to a kid, whilst nursing, whilst firmly telling another kid to STOP taking a picture and hand over the camera!

Dr. Lopez (rough draft)

Several months ago, while Brannon was on his Trauma rotation at Harbor, he had a very special patient who became dear to his heart.   "Morena" Lopez was 2 years old and had severe congenital bi-lateral hip dysplasia.  Usually hip dysplasia is treated early with casts, harnesses, or traction but if severe, is operated around 1 year old.  (Brannon, of course there are probably a lot of holes in this as I can't remember all medical jargon that spills out of your kissable lips).  However, this sweet little hispanic girl's primary care doctor was to put it mildly - incompetent (I'm only guessing) and it went misdiagnosed until the family insisted that her limp wasn't going away and he finally sent her to Harbor.  Surgery of this magnitude is hard on a two year old and as with all surgeries, there are many risks.  Brannon (in Spanish) explained to the family that the surgery was still optional, weighing the risks, however LIFE changing, typically these surgeries have amazingly fantastic results.  Still, the family was hesitant but sent their tiny tender child into surgery, leaving Brannon with the plea, "She is in your hands now, please take care of her."

I can't remember if she had an open reduction or an osteotomy, I'm sure Brannon will correct me but anyhow, one hip is operated on, the patient then recovered for 3 month and the second hip is then operated on.  The poor girl and her family had to take a bus at 5am to be on-time for surgery that morning.  The initial surgery went well (Let me explain that an attending Dr. did most of this surgery while Brannon assisted, he then took over her care post-operatively).  However Brannon received a page a few days later that her blood counts were high.  The weeks that followed were full of infections, followed by rounds of antibiotics, infections, antibiotics, etc.  I could tell that Brannon's shoulders were just heavy with concern for this small patient who just as well could have been his daughter.  He checked on her everyday, even when he had a day off, he would call to check in with whoever was on-call.  Our kids included "the little girl in the hospital" in all of their prayers.  The sweet mama of the little girl stayed with her day and night, even though she had a large family to care for.  Brannon wondered when she ever showered because she was always at her bedside.

The day that she left the hospital was her 6 week post-op mark.  "Morena" did finally recover and eventually had her second surgery which was free from infection.  Brannon had already switched to another rotation at a different hospital and wasn't able to see her or her family again.

.     .    .     .    A couple weeks ago we went out to dinner (see pics at the very bottom)  with some of the ortho clinic staff.  We carpooled with Jaime and Mondona (below) and they started talking about Dr. Lopez.  They asked me if I'd heard of Dr. Lopez. -No, who's he?  They explained that in clinic, patients started to mention a Dr. Lopez.  The residents and P.A.s were confused, there was no Dr. Lopez that worked there.  Finally, one of the patients pointed him out in the hallway- "That's Dr. Lopez."  Well, who do you think it was?  It was Brannon.   .  .  . So the staff questioned Brannon about it, he had no idea.

Days later, Dr. Chris (Mellano) noticed that Dr. Orton's badge had flipped over and on the back was a sticky note with a name on it.  Brannon told him about the little girl and that he had written her name on the sticky note so that he could periodically check on how she was doing.  "Morena" Lopez.   Chris's lightbulb went off and the mystery was solved.  All this time, the patients had been looking at Brannon's flipped over badge and thought Dr. Orton had (A STICKY NOTE- mind you) with his own name on it- hence Dr. Lopez.  (You can make out said sticky note in the picture above).

I'm not exactly sure what I wish to convey with this story, only that I love Brannon with all of my being.  He is such a dear and sensitive man in ways that never fail to surprise and touch my heart.  I truly believe that Heavenly Father made him up special, that one.  I couldn't ask for a more tender father to my children and husband to a sometimes crazy me.  After a sobering week like this one, I just want you to know Brannon that I feel so honored to share my life with you for this small period of time on earth.

 P.S. You are silly.
It was Moustache day at work: 1) Sometimes you guys have way too much fun at work 2) Brannon, did you really feel the need for a prop?
