TIGER SWAG

I wouldn't have thought to pick out this tiger print sleeveless blouse from Bold Cupcake since I tend to avoid tribal graphic prints, but I'm SO glad they included it in my care package anyway! Turns out to be the perfect summer top for a girl who's primary goal is to make a fashion statement. Fuchsia and green tiger print does all the talking for me. It was too easy (suspiciously easy!) to create a killer party look with just a blouse and denim shorts. I turned a pair of white ropes that I *think* used to be purse straps into suspenders by clipping them to my belt loops. This is probably the craftiest thing I've done with 'spare parts' in recent weeks... besides this clever DIY rope trick my creative streak has been lacking. I tend to compensate for it with sparkly snapbacks. ;)

Loving bare legs and Daily Look patent heels this summer... been collecting white shoes lately and so far these are my favorite. Hate how easily they show dirt, love how well they match a fresh monochrome look. And anyway, there's always Magic Eraser for scuff marks.

SALEM

Named this look after the city in Massachusetts famed for its grotesque witch trials, not the music group from 2010! Obviously if my intention were the latter I'd be wearing a mesh jersey and black lipstick. Instead, I'm sporting (but sadly not sporty) a schoolgirl style dress from Romwe that resembles Wednesday Addams' eerily adorable gothic get-up. And if she were alive and reading this blog post, she'd be staring through the screen at me with an intense and unmatched hatred for my stupid alliterations. Sorry chica. Can't help that my writing style never evolved post-fifth grade. But mah style sure did! What would my elementary school self have thought of this ridiculous flower crown???? Honestly, probably not SASSY enough for my DIVA self. Head gear of choice circa 2k4: hot pink corduroy newsboy cap from Limited Too. Still into it.

I love shooting in this dimly lit garden area because it's about goth as scenery gets 'round these parts. In Vegas, everything is sleek, futuristic, and tropical. Sometimes industrial, which is also pretty cool. I like the postmodern look both aesthetically and symbolically, but definitely NOT when I'm photographing outfits like this one. Fortunately, this shaded tree enclave tucked away in one corner of my neighborhood saved the day. Maybe it's even cool enough to earn back Wednesday Addams' respect???? Now that I have a fancy 50mm lens for my camera, I want to start experimenting with new environments around the city. Some of the technicolor murals downtown would make for sick backdrops. Woot woot.

Happy Halloween from Boba Zeva!

Last night for Halloween, I decided to unleash my anime schoolgirl persona BOBA in the spirit of the holiday. I didn't actually go anywhere, unless you count the kitchen, so my costume went unappreciated by all but the flour, sugar, and rolling pin. Yes, it was a homemade cookies kinda night, and baking while in cosplay made it all the merrier. Not an elaborate outfit, but schoolgirl uniforms rarely are so a simple blouse and knee-highs did the trick!

The 'manga makeup' I did here isn't SO over the top that you couldn't wear it out of the house without feeling like a circus act. It's pretty much my normal routine, with a few extra steps:

  • Foundation
  • Mascara on top lashes
  • Thick cat eye wing with black liquid eyeliner on top lip
  • White Lime Crime liquid eyeliner on water line and below lash line. This creates the illusion that your actual eyeballs are much larger than they really are, which is how anime characters appear.
  • A line of black liquid eyeliner underneath the white eyeliner below the lower lash line. This creates the illusion that your eyeballs ends where the line is drawn, and the white eyeliner is part of your actual eyeball. Extend the line diagonally toward the wing tip on the upper lid so that the entire line connects and creates a round, slanted shape.
  • A layer of loose black or dark brown eyeshadow over the black liquid eyeliner line to create a smoky effect.
  • 9 vertical doll lashes underneath the smoky eyeshadow layer, applied with black liquid eyeliner
  • A gradient light brown to jet black application of eyeshadow above the cat eye wing on the top lid
  • Bright pink blush on the apples of your cheeks
  • Light pink lip liner in the center of the lips (instead of lining the entire mouth) to create a smaller, more heart-shaped look.
  • An application of nude lipstick (I used “Coquette” by Lime Crime)
  • An application of matte, opaque pastel pink lipstick over the nude (I used “Countessa Fluorescent” by Lime Crime)
Try it next year - or to your next costume party! Or just for fun! Happy Halloween, y'all.

PARKMAN BLUE

Somethin' bout the energy of this outfit reminds me of Yoko Ono. Hippie Yoko, not nu-millennium-newsboy-cap-and-wire-rimmed-sunglasses Yoko (which is arguably a cooler version of her, but sadly not the aesthetic I was channeling). My breezy cotton pants are from CRASH AND BURN, a brand the fashion blogger community knows well for its signature tie-dye designs and industrial, gradient patterns. Now it's your turn to get in on the action by checkin' out the shop! I love the free-spirited element present in these palazzo pants. A flower crown and Eastern print cardigan from my sis keep the look summery and cool. Fun outfit for a spontaneous September day... #YOLO Ono. That's wassup.

WOODLAND VILLAGER

I picked up this floral bodysuit during my June trip to LA. I found it at my friend Lola's frock swap and relished the challenge of incorporating such an unusual garment into an outfit. Not only is it a one-piece, but it's a one-piece with snap buttons, long sleeves, and a sassy collar. It looks characteristic of a pastoral village near a forest somewhere far away. With that theme in mind, I fastened this blue flower crown to match the decorative floret pattern. The shoes are another story and a half! Madeline gifted them to me when I visited her bomb dot com pad in K-town. From one fashion blogger's closet to another!

I'm not a huge fan of high-low skirts and dresses because they still feel a bit trendy to me. Nonetheless, I love me a creative hemline and appreciate any opportunity to show off my gams while simultaneously enjoying the mystique of a maxi. Basically, this skirt is the sartorial manifestation of having your cake and eating it too. I'm hoping that the style will stand the test of time... maybe then I'll savor its ubiquity in the fashion world!
