Evolution is a given.
Everything evolves. And in my opinion, technology evolves faster than most everything else. Today, the lecturer asked what the differences were between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. Honestly, I've always wondered but never got around to finding out properly.
So after doing some research, I have compiled a list of the key differences from my understanding:
Web 1.0
- Was read only
- Coding was HTML
- Web pages were linear and content was mainly from companies who could afford exports to make sites for them
- Communication was limited, only between web master and client
- Information was shared mostly from client servers
- Advertisements informed people
- Is both read and write
- Coding is not limited to just HTML, now its XML, CSS
- Web sites provide more interactivity. Average user has the means to publish their own content easily
- Communication not only with web master but also with other users who have access to the site
- Information can now be shared peer-to-peer
- People inform people (word of mouth)
Web 2.0 gives the average person more control over his/her own web experience. LiveJournal was one of the pioneering blogging platforms, since then, we have seen the rise in social sites. More popular examples of which are Facebook, Blogger, Twitter, YouTube.
Web 2.0 is all about community and interactivity. It is all about collaboration and is user-driven.
Clearly, the web that we are using today is so much more versatile than its predecessor of the early 90's, but it still has limitations.
According to this article from the official Google Blog, Web 3.0 may well be on the horizon. Google search has this algorithm that can understand synonyms. So "photo" and "picture" would render the same results. Something like that.
Need to finish reading the blog entry.
The end.

For one of our Typography for Digital Media projects, we have to make a weather report in motion. Kinda thing. Like faux motion graphics. But using Flash.
Anyway, I am seriously having trouble trying to storyboard that shit, so I looked at some references on YouTube. I know it's not exactly what we're trying to achieve, but inspiration nonetheless.
1. Pulp Fiction in Motion Graphics:
2. Pulp Fiction Kinetic Typography
3. The 8 Rules of Fight Club
4. Tropic Thunder Kinetic Typography
5. Stewie Griffin - Kynetic Type
6. Minimalism Kinetic Type Poem
7. You're Stupid
8. Social Life, With Friends
9. Fight Club Chemical Burn
10. Superbad Typography

Yes, this is the first so called "assignment blog post", Ten Things That Describe Me.
So, basically, we have to list ten things that describe us. I don't think it's a top ten sort of thing. Just ten random things. I'm going to use headings!
1. Gemini
I was born between 20th May and 21st June, so that makes me a Gemini. I don't really obsess about the whole astrological "profiling", but sometimes it is pretty accurate.
2. Transient
I like to move around, different houses, different towns, different countries. I don't like staying in one place for too long, I get restless. I guess this is because my dad moved us around a lot when I was younger. I like the whole process of moving; sorting out the things you need, throwing out the things that you don't and not being able to throw out certain things.
3. Pack rat/Magpie
I tend to accumulate unnecessary things, always rationalising that I will have a use for it some day.
4. Reading
I enjoy reading. But, I haven't done much reading this year. Ten (not Top ten, random ten) of my favourite books are:
- "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien
- "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini
- "20th Century Ghosts" by Joe Hill
- "One Were Warriors" by Alan Duff
- "Tales of the Tikongs" by Epeli Ha'ofa
- "The Tenderness of Wolves" by Stef Penney
- "The Count of Monte Cristo" Alexandre Dumas
- "Little Women" Louisa May Alcott
- "Rape: A Love Story" Joyce Carol Oates
- "To Kill A Mocking Bird" Harper Lee
5. 90's Music
I like to listen to bands of the 90's. The songs make me nostalgic because I remember them playing on the radio in my childhood. Rock, any kind of Rock, from the 90's is seemingly timeless, it just gets better with age. But I do like a lot of new music too. I listen to everything, my taste in music is very random; any genre, any artist (except Akon). I don't usually admit this in public, but my playlist has some pop; some Britney, Taylor Swift and Mandy Moore. Haha! But listed below are ten (random) songs from my iTunes "Top 25 Most Played" list:
- "Sharing The Night Together" Dr. Hook
- "Always Be My Baby" David Cook
- "Not Meant To Be" Theory of a Dead Man
- "Not Ready To Make Nice" The Dixie Chicks
- "Windmills" Toad the Wet Sprocket
- "Hawa Me Urta Jaya" The Bombay Vikings
- "Every Little Thing" Dishwalla
- "Long Long Way To Go" Def Leppard
- "Meet Virginia" Train
- "Drops of Jupiter" Train
6. Laughter
I like laughing. I like making people laugh. I love sitcoms like "Friends" and "Arrested Development". Both shows are no longer running, but the humour on those shows was very original. "Friends" ran for ten seasons! That's the longest running TV show ever! But Arrested Development discontinued after the third season. Which is sad because that was a great show.
7. Videos
I like watching YouTube videos. I'm going to list ten (random) channels that I have subscribed to:
8. Social Networking
I spend a big portion of my free time on my Facebook, I'm sure everybody does. So, it's alright. I like the mini-games and quiz applications. Over the years, I have been on many social networking sites, I've tried MySpace, hi5, Friendster, Tagged, Bebo, ICQ, to name a few, but none of them really stuck. I like the way Facebook is laid out. I dislike any "pimp my page" options because they make loading a real pain.
9. Movies
One of the best movies I've seen this year would have to be District 9. It had me gripped from beginning to end. I like comedies, but not those lame parody movies like "Epic Movie", "Superhero Movie", etc. I think they have killed that theme, the whole parody thing, and those kinds of movies should not be made anymore. I like African-American comedies Quentin Tarantino movies and horror movies. I enjoy animated films like Shrek 1, Ice Age, Coraline, Spirited Away, Totoro, Graves of the Fireflies. I am not a hardcore movie-goer, but I do enjoy going to the cinema with friends.
10. Random
I am random. Aren't we all? I like writing lists. Lists of songs I like, list of things to do, list of books I want to read, any kind of list. I like to buy stationery that I will probably never ever use. I like to drink Ribena and wear coloured shoes. I like the colour yellow right now and I like origami.
Alright, so that is my list. I think around number six, I kind of lost the plot and started randomly coming up with things to write. From the listed items above, one can concur that I spend a lot of time online.
