Call for Mail Art: Weird (existing) Animals! Platypus, Tapir, Okapi, Echidna, Mole, Axolotl are some of my favourite animals. They have in common that they exist irl and that they are uncommon. Which animal do you think odd? Send your image of an unusual (existing, no fantasy) animal. All media are welcomed, preferable postcard size (10x15 cms), maximum A4 (20x30 cms). No jury, no fee, no return. All weird existing animals will be published in this ongoing virtual exhibition.

Katerina Nikoltsou (35)
In the title I counted nr 35, although that is incorrect: Katerina has made and send me much more great and very much appreciated mail art. Only lack of time made me publish just a few pieces of mail art in the past years.
This Whale in Space is one of the examples of Katerina's wonderful mail art works, mixed media (acryl paint, collage) and caused a big smile on my face, as big as the whale's smile.
Thank you very much, Katerina!

An impressive animal swam to my place: a Whale!
Sent by Katerina from Greece, and she added a clue to the 'what or whom is she staring at?' card:

Indeed, apples, onions and.. more impressive animals: Dinosaurs!

Along with some orange:

And this lovely Goldfish:

And some money, to check whether I am bribable or not:

Thank you very much, Katerina!

Sonia Egorova (2)

Oh, how I love this drawing by young artist Sonia Egorova!
Eduard Egorov, who provided the mail art with beautiful animal postage stamps and a wonderful Tree stamp, told that Sonia's mail art had been sent in October 2016 already.
However, after four months Sonia and Eduard received it in return.
First I was wondering why. But now I realize that it has to do with the season.
Russian and Dutch Post wanted to prevent these little creatures from freezing. головастики, also known as kikkervisjes, also known as tadpoles, don't florish in autumn or winter, they grow best in Spring!

So this time they used an envelope, and it arrived well (some weeks ago already).

Eduard enclosed this call for mail art: Irises. An interesting theme I'd like to join (is it the flower? the colourful part of the eye? the arco-iris, rainbow in Spanish?)
See for more information the Irises Art website.

Большое спасибо, Соня и Эдуард!

Ruth Giles

Ruth Giles created a variety of animals in a variety of ways. The Comb Jelly she drew on black paper, which has an effect as amazing as the real illuminating animal must have (this scanned picture shows less than half of the bright light her drawing has).
Meanwhile this Right Whale has been drawn in a different way, and he or she swims in an interesting environment.

And look at this rubberstamp printed Crow!

And the wonderful Cavias (Guinea Pigs), of which I'm wondering how she stamped these.

The envelope shows more interesting and well-known animals, on both rubberstamps and postage stamps.

Thank you very much, Ruth!

Eva (13)

Who would ever have thought that a giant animal such as the Whale would fit in a letterbox and would be able to travel by snail mail?
Eva (and the Spanish and Dutch Post) proofed it by sending (and delivering) this nice friendly Whale in front of an envelope.
And she added a funny fish. Maybe I could use it as a template to create more Fish!?!

With the Whale and Fish, Eva also sent two regular postcards, of which one is a great DIY 'build a whale' card, and the other shows how people can meet Whales in real.

Thank you very much, moltes gràcies, Eva!!

Katerina Nikoltsou (11)

The Whale is an imposant animal. The clock (time!) and sea blue sea make clear who the sender is: Katerina Nikoltsou from Greece!

On the back a Greek mail pigeon as artistamp, as well as the artist herself.

And on the envelope Katerina's characteristic rubber stamp prints. Plus an official postage stamp showing Mount Olympus (where the ancient Greek gods used to live - they still do, but I am told that the Olympus has been moved and nowadays is situated in a location above New York City).

Great work of mail art, thank you very much, Katerina!

Vizma Bruns (2)

A Platypus from the land of the Platypus: Australia!
Thanks to Vizma Bruns we can learn the story of the Old Man Platypus...

.. and learn how to have a drink while being in a Fish Tank! (My bottle of course contains water, or coffee.)
(What happened to Marie?)

Nice stamps, even a Mailogram and an original Vizma Artistamp!
This Giant Lobster was on the smallest part of the mail:

And this is a piece of fabric which really asks for being added some more stitches to!

And last but not least: a great transparent dotted envelope, with on the stamp... an Echidna, yay!

Thank you very much, Vizma!

Guido Vermeulen

Again a great example of how Mail Art is Mail Art and not only Art!
This (Friour approved!) beautiful envelope arrived from Belgium and has been made by Guido Vermeulen.
I imagine the flowers on the stamps once were growing in the landscape, even though their colours and contrasts might be a bit too mild...
In the envelope Guido also sent contributions to the Your Doctor in Mail Art project, and left me confused: what to publish where?
So I choose the poem to be there, and the explanation how Guido painted the painting/drawing above here.
The last paragraph reminds me of the movie about the boy who drew black drawings... With a message which gives hope (I think)...
I hope you are o.k. with my choice - hoop dat je het o.k. vindt, zo!
Hartelijk dank, Guido!

Please note the Network site friour.multiply.com and the personal blog of Guido Vermeulen.
