New Beginnings

Hello, I know, it's been a long time. I've been working on my PHD......Projects Half Done!!  Not finished by a long way but it has been an interesting year with lots of twists and turns.
I have some news......there will be more activity starting in the New Year.  I have been chosen to join a new design team, working for Affordable Crafting. I have known Mandy for many years and so look forward to creating projects for her along with several other crafters. Affordable Crafting stocks many brands so hopefully there will be something to appeal to everyone as we all showcase some ideas.
Have a wonderful holiday season and see you in the New Year with some interesting projects.

These crackers were made at a recent craft group using an old cracker die from John Next Door, sorry about the boring background, the craft room is undergoing a revamp in preparation for 2025. If you would like further details on the crackers then you can find them here.

Crackers Are Not Just For Christmas

The challenge at River Of Creativity this month is all about Celebration, this doesn't have to be Christmas, it can be the celebration of anything. I have chosen to make a cracker because I like them and think it's such a shame they only get used at Christmas, they're great for any occasion.
This cracker is actually a half normal size version, great for tea parties and other get togethers, it also means you can cut two from one A4 sheet of card.
Glitter card makes for a very bright cracker and using the Craft Artist non shed, non shed because it's not actually glitter atall, means there's no mess.
Using the new strip dies from John Next Door, JND235 Shiregreen, I cut several lengths of black card to decorate the cracker before assembly. Two strips with one side and the bar middle, then one strip with both sides and the bar middle. All the strips were attached with redline tape as it's good and strong.
To make the rosette I cut two strips in black using only one side die and stuck them together to make one long strip. Then I scored the strip at every pattern repeat, each diamond point and each gap between diamonds.
Once all scores were made I pleated the entire strip and glued the ends together to make a ring. After the glue had dried I gently pushed the straight side of the ring down on my craft mat to make it form a rosette, this took a little bit of encouragement but it's so worth the time spent. Happy that the rosette was alright I glued a small piece of black card under the centre of the rosette, placed a small weight on top to hold it and went away for a cup of tea while it dried.
In my stash I found a nobly clear gem that would fit perfectly over the small hole in the rosette, but I didn't want a clear gem so I coloured it yellow with an alcohol marker before sticking it firmly in place with strong glue. As the rosette had a flat back because of the small card circle it was stuck to it was easy to fix to the cracker with redline tape.
This cracker won't actually crack, I didn't put a snap inside but you could if you wanted to. I chose to use curling ribbon to seal the cracker  because I like the curls you can make with the ribbon ends, I have used two lengths on each end to get extra curls.
You can make these crackers with any colour combination you wish and any decoration that suits the occasion, so why limit their use to Christmas. A cracker is not just for Christmas, it's a great way to wrap a small gift any time of year.

Pink Poinsettia Cracker

The cracker die used to make this is last years Faceted Cracker from John Next Door but the glitter card, the twig die and the poinsettia overlay are new this year.
I forgot to take any construction pictures but it's really very easy to put together as long as you use redline tape, especially if using glitter or mirri card.
This glitter card is a new shade for this year adding to the non shed range from Craft Artist, it's called Gold Blush and has an 'old rose' kind of tone to it. It matches very well with Shell Pink linen card also from Crafts Too. For this project it is teamed up with Mouse Grey linen card and a rose gold mirri card I found in my local craft shop.
The cracker is cut from the glitter card and assembled, it's tied up with silver organza ribbon. For the poinsettia I have cut the base petals in Graphite glitter card with the new Pinstripe Poinsettia die overlay in shell pink. I had to use Glue Glaze to get the card to stick to the glitter card, it's a very strong glue.
The twigs are cut from rose gold mirri and the ivy leaves are cut from Mouse Grey linen card with a hint of silver gilding polish around the edges. The centre of the flower is a bobbly gem from my stash, no idea where or when I got it. All the foliage and flower are stuck on to the cracker with hot glue.

Reach For The Stars

When is a cracker not a cracker?.....when it's a rocket.  John Next Door's new faceted cracker die just lends itself to adaptation, for me it has a more masculine appeal than the usual style cracker.
Using an A4 sheet of silver mirri card I cut out the cracker. I also cut two small holes in what ends up as the top section of the body, then covered those holes with a small piece of vellum so you can't see the contents when finished.
To get the pointed top to the rocket I cut out alternate triangles on one end, making sure to turn them into tabs for sticking the top together. I cut one in rough card as a prototype first so I didn't waste my mirri card.
While the cracker was flat I also coloured the inside of the base red and removed small triangles from the middle of each section to look like the rocket has fins.
Putting the rocket together was made easier when I put a dab of the Glue Glaze on top of each piece of redline tape I used, it gives a tiny bit of wiggle room and then holds fast. Tape is great but it does eventually perish so by adding glue it will hold for much longer. I started with the top so that I could get my fingers into the point to adjust it as I went round, usually I start in the centre of a cracker but not this time.
I have a small globe stamp that I then covered with the sentiment embossed in silver, die cut with a circle and then added it to a die cut scalloped circle. A small hole punched through this disc meant I could then add silver elastic cord and add it to the top of the rocket. To seal the bottom part of the cracker I used some silver peel off strips wrapped around twice, this will make it easy to open to get at the gift inside.
With the rocket assembled I stuffed it with red tissue paper and left a small end sticking out to look like flames as it takes off. These would be great for a children's party, swap the wording for their name or age.

I love this die, it has so many possibilities, including Sam's pillow box. It will remain a firm favourite at any time of year, afterall, a cracker is not just for Christmas.
