Wow, thanks for the love guys. It makes me feel good that sitting here waiting for pictures to upload to the blog isn't worthless. I guess if I start feeling like no one cares what I'm saying I'll beg for comments again. It took five years to get to the first time, so hopefully it'll be five more before I get frustrated with the time it takes to get a tiny ten second movie to upload.
Like I briefly mentioned in my last post, I'm having trouble getting motivated to clean and put lots of work into certain things. I think it's lots more fun to read then to clean my ANNOYING black stovetop, or to play with Elise and Ryan rather than clean the dishes from dinner, to read Elise extra bedtime stories than to clean her spill mat on the floor under her highchair for the eighty eighth time (it's disgusting under there). Don't even get me started on my stupid apartment stainless steel sink. I swear that as soon as I have my own place that will be one of the first things to go.
I've discovered a couple things about myself and done some research into different techniques other people use. I thought I would share.
One: I hate cleaning by myself, but I also get annoyed when I have to put the dishes in the dishwasher three to four times because Elise has been *helping*. I told Ryan that there will always be toys on the floor when she's going to bed and there will always be dishes in the sink after dinner. He's gotta help me instead of just entertaining Elise because that just makes me jealous.
Two: I can stand things at a certain level of uncleanliness unless someone is going to come over. So I'll need to get over this because our place is just too small for guests and visiting teachers just come once a month.
Three: I'm getting trunkie. We've gone month to month in our contract so I know the end for cleaning this apartment is near. So my thought is always "How many more time do I want to deep clean the carpet? Won't I just have to clean the oven again once we've found somewhere to move to?"
What have I found out?
Tip 1: Never go to bed with a dirty sink. Kitchen or bathroom. It doesn't take that long to do and you feel more prepared for the day when you wake up and it's clean.
Tip 2: If your floor is picked up you'll feel like your house is amazingly more clean instantly. I fullheartedly agree, I intend to add vacumming and cleaning the spill mat to our nightly routine of cleaning up toys off the ground. It is the only time toys are all the way off the ground all day long. Sorry about the late night vacumming downstairs neighbors, but if it doesn't happen now, chances are it will only happen once or twice a month as it stands now.
Tip 3: I like to do cleaning all together (probably comes from my reason number one of not liking to clean by myself). If the whole family works on the kitchen then everyone gets done at the same time. If everyone works on the bathroom then everyone has to deal with the gross stuff. The tip is to have a family work jar. You set a timer for fifteen minutes and everyone cleans the whole time. Everyone who worked on the project gets to put a marble in a jar, when the jar is full your family gets a reward. the jar can be as big or small as you want as could your reward. You could have a huge jar and have the rward be a cool trip or you could have a small jar you would fill weekly and have brownies or an ice cream parlor trip.
Tip 4: Clean your stove top drip pans by soaking them in a combination of vinegar and water for a couple hours and then use a cream of tartar paste made with water to scrub the black burnt stuff.
Tip 5: Use baby oil and a soft rag to spiff up your stainless steel sink. A little will go a long way to make it shine like new.
Tip 6: 80% of dirt in your home walks in on your feet. Get the right kind of welcome mat (like the ones in front of retail/grocery stores). Be diligent about taking off your shoes first thing when you get in the door.
Here's a couple pictures of Elise jumping well trying to jump by our front door. Hoepfully these will make this long post worth while.
