Poking Fun at Dana1981

I have experienced first hand the climate zealotry of Dana1981. And so, I offer this tribute to the poor little misguided soul.

Quoting Dr. Luboš Motl:
Dana1981 is a 29-year-old Prius driver and the owner of several other alternative vehicles who has mistakingly received a bachelor degree in astrophysics and a master degree in physics, so he or she became a self-described environmental scientist who is ‘passionate’ about the climate hysteria.”
Click here to see Dana1981 on what he imagines to be his planet saving electric moped.

Dana1981, like all “sustainability” zealots, is blissfully ignorant of just how unsustainable his electric vehicle fantasies are and just how ironic his entire centrally planned “sustainability” nonsense really is.

But, the larger point (for this post) is just how “unmanly” this blissfully ignorant little dweeb is.

Is the dweeb in this clip wearing Dana’s Green jacket?
Just having a little fun (at Dana1981’s expense):

Foster The People - Pumped up Kicks

On balance, I detest SNL. In general, SNL substantiates the case that the so-called “Progressive” ideology is a mental disorder (with Manhattan being ground zero for the most severe manifestation of said mental disorder).

Never the less, there are three reasons why I DVR every new episode of SNL (and then watch, at most, about 15 to 20 minutes of the program).

1) The opening skit is occasionally amusing (this week was not).

2) Weekend Update is usually amusing (even when spewing Leftist propaganda).

3) SNL is my one remaining connection to the world of pop music. Usually, this segment only causes me to shake my head at what passes for talent these days. But, on very rare occasions, I find something at least marginally impressive (or, if not impressive, at least fresh, original, creative, unique or otherwise intriguing).

Last week, the country music group Lady Antebellum was enjoyable. One thing I appreciated was a very attractive female performer who -- unlike most these days -- was NOT dressed like a $2 hooker. Their song -- Just a Kiss -- was sweet, innocent and charming. Their other song -- We Owned the Night -- was also a good one.

This week, the musical guest was “Foster the People”. The name was familiar. But, I had never sampled their music. They performed their most popular song - “Pumped up Kicks”.

The music -- composed before the lyrics -- is catchy, upbeat dance music (with a carefree whistling interlude). The lyrics are dark as hell -- getting inside the mind of a homicidal Columbine style perp. It makes for an intriguing contradiction (and style point #1).

SNL being SNL, my expectation was that there was some gun control message lurking in there somewhere -- apparently not.

Mark Foster is quoted to say:
“To me the epidemic isn’t gun violence; the epidemic is lack of family, lack of love, and isolation.”
That sounds like a family values assessment any Conservative could agree with.

Foster the People
perform “Pumped up Kicks” on SNL:

Click here for another live version (Austin City Limits).
Is the ACL audience a little too into the chorus? Disturbing?
Do they all get it? Is it a massive display of irony in action?
Or, just dumb kids mindlessly regurgitating a catchy chorus?

The second song from Foster the People -- Houdini -- featured a nice soprano sax solo from Kenny G, but did not grab me as much. That said, the lyrics seemed to me to address free speech principles (apparently, trampled upon by MTV), property rights and the virtue of striving to be your best -- again, Conservative values. But, that’s just my interpretation.

Ever Eaten Balut?

I am a gastronomically adventurous soul.
I have eaten many unusual things in many parts of the world.

But, unlike Dr. Manny Alvarez and Chris Kilham,
I have never eaten Balut:

And, like Dr. Manny, I’m not sure I want to.

Tuesday Music Break - L.A. Woman

“I see your hair is burning - hills are filled with fire.
If they say I never loved you, you know they are a liar”

I could do without the Mr. Mojo risin’ riff.
And, Jim Morrison was nobody’s role model.
But, this is one heck of an iconic song.
For better or for worse, it captured a moment in time.

SNL Skewers the European Union Socialist Folly

Is SNL beginning to understand the Socialist folly?
Sooner or later, Socialists run out of other peoples money:

Photos shed new light on life in Appalachia

Anyone who thinks they know anything about life in Appalachia by way of photos they have seen of the area should think again. Squalor can be found anywhere and politicians knowingly select images to serve purely political ends.

The University of Kentucky sponsored a contest intended to counter the negative stereotype through images showing the other side of Appalachian life. They found a winner.

Quoting The Examiner:
“Photographer Michele Coleman contrasted a rugged Appalachian hillside with the refined skills of a cello-playing teenager, offering a fresh perspective of a region accustomed to being portrayed through gritty images of squalor.

Her photo took top prize in a contest sponsored by the University of Kentucky's Appalachian Center. It shows a high school senior from Marietta, Ohio, with her arms draped around the classical music instrument while perched on the hillside.

‘You could see a talented young individual,’ said Coleman, a professional photographer from Parkersburg, W.Va.

The West Virginia native said she tires of seeing old photos reinforcing stereotypes of Appalachia, and hopes she did her part to show there's a much different side to the 205,000-square-mile region.”
