Lots of Random Things!

Norah is cheering again through the Upward program at our church. She loves it! For those of you who know Norah, you know that she is a relatively quiet kid. She talks all the time - but she is not loud. She can be sometimes, but overall, she has a very quiet voice. I often half to ask her to repeat herself - even if I am right next to her - because she talks so quietly. At cheerleading - she is totally different. There are some weeks at practice when she is the loudest one - and with 15 other girls on her squad - that is saying a lot!! Each week after practice Norah comes home and teaches Lucy her new cheers. They perform them for us all week long. Lucy can't wait to cheer with Norah next year (although, I would be okay if they want to try something else).

Lucy and Daphne are going to the Mother's Day Out program at our church. They both seem to really like it. Daphne is usually ready for me to leave so she can get busy playing - although, every once in a while she acts like she is going to cry but she gets over it quickly. We are learning a lot about Lucy this year through Mother's Day Out. She relies on Norah so much in most situations that I think it has been good for her to have her own class to go to this year. Lucy tends to be an observer. I have to help her get involved in an activity or she cries. Her teachers have mentioned that she stands back and watches the other kids for a long time before joining in on an activity. She is making friends but it has taken awhile. I feel so bad for Lucy sometimes because she gets so nervous in new situations.

Kevin and I are both running in a half-marathon in April. Kevin has run in quite a few over the last 8 years (including one full), but I haven't run that distance since before we had Norah. I am pretty sure at the time that I said I never wanted to run that far again. However, I wanted some sort of motivation/something to work towards so I would keep running this winter. The run is 8 weeks from today - and I have run up to 8 miles, so I think I should be okay. Although, I have to say that with all the snow we have had this year, I have run further on a treadmill than I ever thought I would. I am ready for more regular outdoor runs! In the fall I was running about once a week with my friend, Beka - and I love running with a friend! Other than the few times Kevin and I are able to run together, I usually only run by myself! Running with Beka is a great distraction to the distance I am running!!

After prayer and many conversations with Kevin, I have decided to become a certified personal trainer. Several reasons come to the top of my head: I really enjoy working out and enjoy the feeling of completely a challenging workout. We try to be healthy and want to teach our kids (and others) to be healthy but not obsessive about what they eat. Living in the obese society that we do - I think people just need some help to get going. Losing weight and becoming physically fit take EFFORT - it isn't very often that people just try to eat better and walk a little more and actually lose the weight they want. You have to know WHAT you are eating, WHEN you are eating it. You also have to exert some serious energy to become physically fit. I know a lot of moms who say their bodies will never be the same after having kids - I disagree. If you are happy with your body weight - great! If you are not - I think that the body after baby thing is just an excuse to not put forth effort. I also think that so many people are not living the life that God intends for them because they are too tired to get off the couch. There are so many diseases that can be prevented by living a healthy life. All that being said, I am taking an online class and hope to be certified by mid-spring. I am really excited about the possibilities that personal training offers and that it is a way for me to contribute to our finances on a schedule that still allows me to homeschool.

In the fall Kevin and I did an herbal cleanse. I had read about different types of "cleansing" and knowing the number of toxins that are in our bodies and how tired and groggy I was feeling all the time, Kevin and I decided to try one. For us the best option was the Advocare Herbal Cleanse. Several cleanses that I read about tell you that you can't eat much or anything other than your cleansing drink. To me that doesn't sound safe. Your body needs fuel. My body needs fuels - to homeschool, to parent, to clean, to cook, to workout, etc - I was not going to do anything that requires me not to eat! Very few people eat perfectly all the time - we all miss out on nutrients that our bodies need. Advocare products seem to meet you in the middle. The company wants their clients to eat write and be active, but knowing that we can't eat right all the time, they step in with their vitamins and supplements. If you need more energy - this may be something for you to try. If you know you need to lose weight and just need something to kick start you weight-loss journey - may be for you. If any of you readers are interested in finding out more about Advocare - let me know and I can put you in touch with the right person!!

Random Stuff

The girls are often dressed like this for school.
My almost 4 year old!!!!
Our little soccer player

We have had a million things going on here so this post is going to be totally random.

1. Norah is playing Upward soccer again this year and I am coaching. It has been fun so far. We have a sweet group of girls with a good mix of ability. All but one played last year, so they all know a little about what is going on. We had a first game today and the girls did great!!

2. I am teaching the homeschool class that meets on Wednesday mornings at our church during the women's Bible study. I teach the Bible class and my friend, Jenny, is teaching an art class. Norah's art projects have been great! They have done everything from watercolor to oil pastel to clay. She is loving art!! After 10 weeks of art, Norah now says she wants to be an artist/art teacher!!

3. Max and Denise were here for about a week and the girls had a blast playing with Alex and Contessa. Then they were back again for the weekend. The girls spent HOURS dressing up and pretending!!

4. Kevin and I went to the St. Louis Homeschool Expo. It is a great convention. If you are contemplating homeschooling and you are somewhere near St. Louis, you should totally go next year!!

5. Trying to make decisions about our curriculum for school next year. I am doing Sonlight Core 1 and LA (supplementing with First Language Lessons), Singapore Math 1B, Christian Kids Explore Biology, and Rod and Staff Penmanship Grade 2. Hopefully, the girls will be attending this school in the fall for art and Spanish. I still need to decide on our Bible curriculum - I am considering using Raising Rockstars curriculum created by Carissa from 1+1+1=1. I am really excited about our school year next year. The further we get into homeschooling the more I love it. Sure, we have our bad days, but it is such the right fit for our family and I am so thankful to have listened to God's call to teach the girls from home. The individualized attention is great and moving at Norah's pace (as opposed to the pace of the average of a classroom full of kids) has been so beneficial to her learning.

(By the way, if you have considered homeschooling, but don't think you are cut out for it - talk to me. I was a HUGE public school advocate before having kids and always said I would NEVER homeschool. However, through the experience of a friend and her girls, God changed my heart and then changed Kevin's and I have no doubts that this is what God wants for our girls right now. If I can do it, you can do it.)

6. Kevin is getting our garden going again this year. He built 3 garden boxes - and the girls helped him plant our tomato and pepper plants and seeds for various vegetables.

7. Daphne is 15 months - so I need to work on a 15 month post. She is changing and growing at record pace!!

8. I am working on a project for Lucy's birthday. I am making some alphabet bean bags similar to the ones in this post. I have less than a week until her birthday and I still have a lot to do!! I have all the letters ironed on, but I am outlining them in fabric paint and then I have to sew them and stuff them.

9. Several of the children on the Reece's Rainbow website we have been praying for have families who have committed to adopting them!! The girls are so excited!! They still pray regularly for the children and are constantly wanting to look on the website to find more children to pray for. Norah wants to have a lemonade stand to try and raise some money to donate. We are planning on a day in May - more on that later.

10. We are making a big change with our homeschool schedule this week. Now that Daphne is not napping in the morning, school has been incredibly chaotic!! I am so distracted by Daphne as she goes through the girls workboxes and steals stuff or gets into other things she shouldn't. She begs for attention while we are trying to read - leaving our reading time really disrupted!! Starting tomorrow we are going to do school right after lunch while Daphne takes her afternoon nap. I don't love the idea of giving up the girls rest time, but I just don't think I have a choice. We'll see how it goes!! Lucy will be zapped at the end of the day - but rest time is such a struggle for her anyway. I am going to try to have the big girls have some independent play time maybe while I am working on dinner. They usually need a break from each other at the end of the day anyway.

11. Lucy's birthday is Saturday! What!?! She is going to 4!!! Oh my!!

More Sickness

I was hoping to post about all the great things that I got accomplished over the weekend because Kevin took Norah and Lucy to Indy to see his parents. However, my plans changed drastically when Daphne needed to go the the ER in the middle of the night on Friday night. She was barking/coughing and gasping for air - all of this came on very suddenly because she was totally fine during the day on Friday. As it turns out she has croup. Blah. I spent most of the weekend snuggling and rocking a very unhappy baby. I actually thought she was starting to feel better yesterday, but then she started rubbing her ear so I just knew something else was going on.

I took Daphne back to the doctor today and she has an ear infection, too. Lovely. She has been fussier today than all weekend!! Hopefully after 24 hours on the meds she will start feeling better!! I have a feeling this is only the beginning, though. It seems to be a Swinigan trait - the ear infections. Norah and Lucy both have tubes (Norah had 2 sets) and my niece and nephew also had tubes.

Side note: When they weighed Daphne at the doctor today she weighed 16 lbs so she has gained almost a half a pound since her 9 month check up. Maybe she will be 17 lbs by her birthday.

I did get all the presents (that I have) wrapped and under the tree. I cleaned out my laundry room during Daphne's naps - which was a HUGE job. Seriously, it was a dangerous place. Anytime I opened the door I had to duck to make sure nothing fell on my head and whenever I had a dry load of clothes, I had to lift the basket over my head to get it out of there!!

I was hoping to get some scrapbooking done, but was unsuccessful. I have everything out on the dining room table so I am going to try to work a little bit this week. I would love to have Daphne's baby book up to date before she turns one (I have 2 pages done).

Hopefully, I will get more down (and more rest too) next weekend. I still have about 1/3 of my shopping to do.

How about you? Anyone totally done with their shopping? Anyone not even started?

Lucy commented on the way to church that another house looks prettier than ours. This house had TONS of "toys" in the yard. Santa, reindeer, snowmen, angels, etc.
