Its Carving Time!

We had fun one evening this week carving our two big pumpkins.  This is the first time Samuel has ever carved a pumpkin, and he really enjoyed it!  Samuel helped his Daddy scoop out all the insides, and he helped me draw the faces on the pumpkins.
Micah wasn't quite sure what to make of the insides of his pumpkin...
The guys saying "ewwwww!" as Andrew pulled out the insides of this one...
Samuel is ready to light the candles!
And here they are!  Samuel says that his favorite one is on the right, because that is the scary one  (he told us that the pumpkin on the left is scared of the other pumpkin).

Crafting Days: Wall Sign

I just finished making this wooden sign.  I had been wanting to make some sort of sign with the words of Deuteronomy 6:5, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength" to hang by our front door.  I was originally inspired from a Bible Study on the life of Paul that I did about 2 years ago.  I learned that in Bible times, Jewish families would uphold the words of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 as one of the most important biblical phrases in their lives.  The entire passage is an encouragement to carry these words in your heart, to teach them to your children, and to have them constantly on your mind.  Verse 9 talks about writing these words on the "doorposts of your house" and once I read that, I knew I wanted to make this sign for our home.
These words serve as a reminder to me to always dwell on the fact that God is one and we are to fully love Him with everything we are.  If we serve Him with all our being, He will bless us and answer us.

Then one day, I came across a beautiful painted sign on Pinterest, along with a tutorial on how to make one of your own, and decided to go for it.

The hold up was finding some good wood.  I didn't want to use any old plywood from Home Depot - I was hoping for something more original.  Thankfully, my Mom had some old weathered fence posts in her garage that fit the job perfectly.
My husband is amazing and worked one Sunday afternoon with his table saw cutting it to size, and adhering the pieces together.  After sanding it down, adding two coats of primer and two coats of Heirloom White paint, this was my blank canvas.
I played with fonts and printed out the words from my computer.  Then I was able to tape down the words where I wanted them, and used graphite paper to transfer/trace the letters onto the wood.
(My boys gave me a glorious, rare block of time by taking a nap simultaneously, so I could complete this step in one day.  Yay for nap times!)
And this is what I had.  Its light, but you can kind of see the outline of the words.
Next, came the slow process of filling in each letter.  Once I got the hang of it, it took me about 2-3 minutes per letter, uninterupted.
And after another few days of working on it every spare moment that I could find... this is what it became.
I love it!  What a wonderful reminder each time we cross through the door of our home.  :)

Julian

We just returned from our annual White family weekend in Julian.  It was a lovely weekend and the weather was just perfect (you could feel the "Fall" in the air!).  Each year we make some new memories, and take part in some family traditions.  We always start out our weekend by eating dinner Friday night at Wynola's Wood-Fired Pizza & Bistro.  We were lucky and got there early - - before all 150 dad's & daughters from a nearby YMCA camp came for their dinner!  :)
Here we are sitting at a long table.  You can tell the kids are getting older... this was the first year that they were all very well behaved during the entire dinner!  (Even while all sitting next to each other!)  My Dad took my Mom out to dine across the street at Jeremy's on the Hill... a nice restaurant that my Mom has been wanting to eat at for a few years now!  :)  We all ended up having a nice start to the weekend.
Here is a photo of the farmhouse we stayed in.  The property was located right next to Jess Martin Park, which had a lovely playground, exercise area, track & skateboard park.  The kids loved playing at the playground multiple times.  The house also had a fun rope swing and toy/game room for the kids!
Saturday morning we ventured to walk around Julian, and the kids each picked out their own lollipops from the Julian Cider Mill.
If you look close enough, you can see how much Samuel enjoyed his lollipop.  He had blue all across his cheeks!
We all enjoyed watching the bakers make apple pies at Mom's Pies.  They had the best apple pie!
Then Mom took all the girls to the Julian Tea House for some tea.  The guys were kind enough to watch all the boys so we could take the time to do this.
Although Leia has been to several "teas," we were very happy to have Laylie join us this time - - it was her first tea outing!  Both girls had a lovely time and enjoyed the experience.
Our farmhouse just happened to have two big apple trees on the property!  We were going to drive to an apple orchard and pay to pick apples, but we didn't have to!  :)
We filled two huge bags with these delicious apples and brought them home to bake and cook with.
The kids had fun racing to pick up the apples that Uncle Cool knocked down from high up in the tree.
Here is Samuel holding two of the apples picked from the trees.
We all posed under the apple trees for some pictures.
Love my husband!
A cute shot of Leia & Samuel hanging out.  (Notice that Leia let her Aunty Ca do her hair!)
Grandad soaking up moments with the two young ones & the oldest.
It was a cold, wet morning on Sunday.  The cousins had fun walking along the long trail of hay bales.
Before we left the farmhouse, we took a couple family photos of all of us together (in front of the farmhouse, and inside the barn).
What a special weekend!  Thank you Mom & Dad!

More on soccer...

We have such a cutie little soccer man!  This month Samuel has been practicing soccer after preschool, and he's been enjoying it (mostly, because his buddies Collin, Tyler, Ryan & Connor are doing it too!)  Its fun to watch him learn the skills of soccer and see him practicing the drills.
Here he seems to be more interested in the ladies than in what the coach has to say...  ha!
  A high-5 after making a goal!
Its game time - and Samuel got to do one of the starting kicks.
Go yellow team!
 Nick kick Sammy!
Everyone wants the ball!

Bates & Soccer

Last Saturday we went to Bates Nut Farm, out in Valley Center.  It just so happened to be the same weekend as an Arts & Crafts show, so it was really crowded!  We had a great time meeting up with our friends from Growth Group and picking out pumpkins together.

We took some cute photos of the boys picking out pumpkins & feeding the animals.  Micah really loved seeing the animals... especially the sheep.  He just leaned over, and laughed at them in pure joy!  I imagine he was thinking they were really big, live teddy bears, or something...  :)

And we took some great photos of the kids together (not all were pictured below).  Its hard getting a group shot of many kids together, but we tried!  Love these friends!

Then after the pumpkin patch, it was off to Cardiff to watch our nephew's soccer game.  He played forward for the first half, then the coach put him in as goalie for the second half.  He did a great job playing, and we were all so proud of Stryder!

Early signs of a tennis star?

I think so!  :)

On a side note: although Micah never made contact with the ball in the video... he WAS hitting the ball just before I got the camera rolling!  :)  So proud!

Thankful!

I'm so thankful for my sister-in-law, and her gift of hospitality.  :)  And for her amazing camera to capture all these photos when my camera ran out of batteries!

We had a fun day yesterday at her home.  The older two played, and the youngest two napped.  :)
I saw this craft idea on a blog, and knew I wanted to have the kids try it out.
The kids were just as eager and started painting their egg cartons a rainbow of colors...

 Tada!
This was the finished product... we set them out to dry and while we waited, we ate lunch & played candy land.  :)
Next came the fun part!  We went on an "adventure hunt" to go and find colorful items in nature to fit in each space.  :)  The cousins filled their cartons with grass, leaves, berries, flowers, & rocks.
And here is what they found - a beautiful rainbow from God's creation!
