1988 Topps Rack Pack

I recently added this unopend rack pack of 1988 Topps with the Wallach All-Star in the center spot by way of eBay.  Over the years I acquired a few other unopened packs with Wallach, but this is the first rack I've been able to get my hands on.

I'd be hard pressed to come up with a better one.  The Wallach All-Star is in the prime center spot, flanked by a Dave Winfield All-Star insert and Alan Trammell.  As an extra bonus, there is a Tony Gwynn showing on the back.  Short of a the Wallach base card being in the Trammell spot, trying to improve this with say a Mattingly or Raines is really just nit-picking.  I may end up trying to frame this some how, but it's not a huge priority at the moment.  I'm just very happy to add it to the collection for now.  Below are some more photos of the pack.

1986 Donruss All-Stars unopend pack

This the least presentable of the unopened packs I have that show a Wallach card inside.  It's the only one I have that features the Wallach on the back of the package, but it wouldn't make much difference if it were on the front given the Graig Nettles pop-up card obscurring what I'm pretty sure is a Jim Rice card.

I bought a lot of these packs as a kid, albeit, several years after the fact.  They showed up at my local card shop ("The Batter's Box") probably around 1988, and between the gimmick of pop-ups, over-sized cards, the discounted price, and Wallach's inclusion, I tore through a lot of them.

As with any mention of All-Star related things, I'll use this as an oppurtunity to gripe about player selection for a 30 year old exhibition game, as is my habit.  Graig Nettles batted .261 with 15 home runs and 61 RBI in 1985.  He was named the starter at 3B for the National League in the All-Star game and thus was included as a pop-up card in this set.  Wallach hit 22 home runs, drove in 71 runs, and also batted .260 in 1985.   He won the gold glove at 3B, and was also awarded the Silver Slugger.  Yet Nettles got the start, so there was no pop-up card made of Wallach.  It still annoys me.

1984 Fleer Unopened Cello Pack

This is an unopened 1984 Fleer cello pack with Wallach showing through on the the front.  It's my 4th cello pack with a Wallach showing on top.  It's hard to argue with 28 cards and 2 stickers for 49¢.  I vividly remember buying  these packs as a kid.  The grocery store my mother went to back then sold these and I would usually come away with a pack of these, while my brother more often than not opted for a candy of some sort.  I have far more '85 Fleer that survived, so I'm guessing I wasn't buying these for very long, and given the year, this had to be right around the time I started asking for cards on my own rather than having family friends force them on me.

Unopened 1982 Fleer Cello Pack

This is my 3rd unopened cello pack featuring the Wallach card visible on top.  I think these are pretty cool.  I'm not sure if I like this better than the '82 pack, but it's right up with it as my favorite.  Not that there's anything wrong with the '88 Fleer pack I have, I'm just not wild about that set design.  I certainly prefer these to unopened rack packs, as those feature three visible cards, and I find the effect is a little watered down.  With these cello packs the Wallach is very front and center.

Package in the Mail

This arrived from Mark who runs "This Way to the Clubhouse."  Mark is this sites all-time leader in envelopes sent with Wallach's.  It's an unopened cello pack of '88 Fleer with Wallach showing as the top card.  This is now the 2nd unopened pack item in my Wallach collection.  I had no idea he was sending it, and it's a really great surprise.  Thanks Kaz.

Unopened 1982 Topps Cello Pack

This is an unopened 1982 Topps Cello Pack with Tim Wallach on the front.  That's Tom Griffin Showing on the back.  I don't remember these coming with gum, but you can clearly see it's in there.
