Exploring Spring Weather with Kids

We have been having fun exploring some elements of springtime weather in preschool - wind, rain, rainbows, clouds and more. It's such an engaging and timely topic and the children have been very attentive and excited about our activities.

I started the week by telling the children that we were going to observe and chart the weather all week. It turned out to be the perfect weather watching week. We had a windy, rainy, sunny, cloudy and partially cloudy day. I could not have planned it better had I been able to manipulate the weather myself.  To chart the weather I made a large chart with the 5 school days of the week. I printed off some images for the different types of weather (I just googled clip art).  Each day, after observing the weather during our morning outdoor playground time, we added a picture on the correct day that the children thought best described the weather.

While learning about rain we did a simple and fun exploration that the children really enjoyed to simulate what happens to a cloud when it rains.

Exploring Rain Clouds

I filled a clear plastic container with water and topped it with shaving cream (our cloud). I provided the children with blue watercolor paint and pipettes.

The children dropped the blue watercolor onto the shaving cream and observed what occurred. After a few drops the watercolor dropped through the shaving cream cloud, into the water and made visible blue rain.

The children were in awe. It was such an easy, hands-on and visual way to show them how it rains when clouds get overfilled with water.

Making "Magic" Rainbows

Ok, I must admit that we didn't "really" make rainbows but the kids were mesmerized by this color exploration nevertheless and spent a great deal of time on it. It's just a weather spin on the classic "Magic Milk" experiment. Many of you have probably done this many times over.

I put some milk on a clear plastic plate and then let the children add drops of food coloring directly onto the milk. They used red, green, yellow and blue food coloring. I also gave each child a toothpick and a  small cup of dish soap. The children dipped the toothpick into the cup and placed it in the middle of their plate. Then they oohed and ahhed as the "magic" happened.

The colors mixed and swirled, revealing a wonderful "magic" rainbow. It really is a visually neat experience. No two plates had the same reaction, yet they were all awesome. The children were intently watching their plate, glancing at their friends plates and so excited by the whole process.

It's wonderful how a few simple ingredients can ignite so much enthusiasm. If you haven't tried this activity - go for it! It certainly won't disappoint.

If it's not rainbow watching weather, you can always make rainbows with prisms. It's a fun learning activity for kids to try.

Exploring Clouds

While we were talking about clouds we explored cloud dough (8 cups flour to 1 cup baby oil). The children enjoyed the soft sensory feel of the dough but they got bored very quickly.

To make it a bit more inviting I gave them additional baby oil to mix in to the dough as they pleased. My class loves exploring concoctions so I knew this would grab their attention.

They poured and mixed to their hearts content (until I ran out of baby oil).  We ended up with a super soft dough that had a play dough like consistency.  The children, especially the girls, loved this dough. I have no measurements or recipe for reproducing this. It was completely their's and they were free to add baby oil and mix as they pleased.

Ivory Soap Clouds

My preschoolers love microwaving Ivory Soap so I knew I wanted to reproduce this favorite activity to make "clouds".  It's pretty awesome to watch the soap go from bar form to a puffy white cloud in seconds. For more info on what to do you can visit my previous Ivory Soap Exploration

Easy Spring Windsocks

In order to explore wind we made windsocks and (of course) flew them. My class loved this activity. I didn't get any photos of our wind day because I forgot to take them. I will share a quick photo of the Lil Divas doing the same activity. I have to fit them in here somehow don't I? Here's our Windsock post if you want to see how we made them.

Spring Windchimes

These easy to make spring wind chimes combine art/painting with some fine motor/stringing fun for kids.  Here's how the Lil Divas made their spring windchimes

To explore how wind moves things we did a fun experiment using straws and various items from around our classroom.  It's an easy wind exploration children can do at home or school. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera on hand so I didn't get to snap any photos but the Lil Divas did this experiment at home last year with items from around our house -

15 St. Patrick's Day and Rainbow Crafts and Activities for Kids

March is almost here and that means that spring is just around the corner - yay! It's time to start thinking about St. Patrick's Day, Easter, spring, rainbows and flowers. Can you tell I love this time of year? There is something about all the new life after winter that makes me happy.

St. Patrick's Day and Easter are so close together this year that I wanted to jump right in and get things going. So today I am highlighting some of our favorite St. Patrick's  Day and Rainbow themed crafts, learning activities and kid friendly snacks for you. I hope you find some inspiration here.

Crafts & Learning Activities

I enjoy making the Lil Divas' after school and weekend learning fun and playful. One of the ways I do that is by incorporating crafts and holiday themes into our activities since they don't have as much time for these types of activities at school. After all, learning doesn't stop with the school day but it can be informal, playful and fun!

Fun Foods & Snacks

Kids love fun food. My favorite thing to do is to make special pancakes for the Lil Divas for each and every holiday, no matter how big or small. They get such a kick out of it. I have my thinking cap on for what I can make this year but for now I'd like to share some special treats I made in the past.

St. Patrick's Day Themed Rainbow & Shamrock Pancakes

I LOVE making festive/themed breakfasts for the Lil Divas
& my absolute favorite thing to do is try my hand at making fun pancakes.

In honor of St. Patricks Day I made rainbow and shamrock pancakes.
The one thing I absolutely recommend is using squeeze bottles -
they make drawing on the skillet/pan super easy.

Let's take a peek the
Rainbow Pancakes

How To Make Rainbow Pancakes:
1. Use your regular pancake batter/mix and separate it into 6 bowls.
2. Mix with food coloring to get desired rainbow colors.
3. Pour batter into your squeeze bottles. If you do not have squeeze bottles
use ziploc bags and cut the tip off the bottom. I did this for 2 of my colors
because I only have 4 bottles and it worked well.
4. Create rainbow arc on pan, 1 color at a time.
I let it cook well on 1 side before flipping to prevent breakage.

5. Use whipped cream or bananas as clouds & Enjoy!

Shamrock Pancakes

How to Make Shamrock Pancakes:
1. Make your pancake batter as usual and add green food color
2. Using your squeeze bottle (or ziplock bag) draw 3 hearts on your skillet,
making sure they meet at the points as seen below.
3. Draw stem and then fill in the entire outline with pancake batter.

4. Allow pancake to cook well before flipping to minimize chance of breakage.
5. Add syrup & enjoy!

Spring Weather - Making Rainbows

Spring is almost upon us and with it comes lots of awesome weather.
Sun, clouds, wind, rain and of course rainbows.

With both spring on the horizon and St. Patrick's Day nearly here,
there is simply no better time to talk about rainbows.

We read the book The Rainbow and You and talked about how rainbows are made. Rainbows are fascinating and the Lil Divas are very intrigued by them. I knew they would enjoy making their own rainbows, so I brought out some prisms, opened the window shades and let them have fun.

As they worked we observed what happens when the light hits the prism and when there is no sunlight streaming through the prism.  We made rainbows on the floor, on the ceiling and on white paper.

We made big rainbows and little rainbows,
thin rainbows and thick rainbows,
long rainbows and short rainbows.

Throughout the entire process the Lil Divas were amazed
at how the light held all these amazing colors.

Tip: If you don't have a prism you can fill a clear glass cup with water (about 3/4 full) and use it as a prism. Find a sunny spot and put the glass in front of it and aim towards white paper - you will see a rainbow! We tried this too but I unfortunately didn't get pictures of it. It works!

After making and observing rainbows, the Lil Divas made a rainbow book.

To make the books I printed up a title page, half sheets of paper with each color of the rainbow and an end page. The Lil Divas made all the illustrations by drawing something that matched each color of the rainbow.  For the Oldest Diva we talked about "all" the colors of the rainbow (including indigo & violet) but the youngest Diva was a bit confused so I kept it at just purple for her. We will continue to explore rainbows and she hears us talking about it, so I know she will catch on anyway.

Rainbow Theme: Skittles & Jello Food Fun

Skittles Math

What You Need
bag of skittles
Skittles Math Sheets

I randomly gave each Lil Diva 20 skittles out of a bag to use for our graph.

We worked on analyzing the graph and did some addition problems using the template I made (provided above)

Then they made some Skittles patterns

and since you can't have fun with Skittles and not "taste the rainbow"  here's a kid-friendly snack idea:

Jello Rainbow Snack

This took 2 days of prep time but the girls really helped along the way and it was fun (except for when they kept asking if it was done, lol!)

What You Need:
clear cups
jello in rainbow colors - we used strawberry, orange, lemon, lime, berry blue & grape

1. Make the jello according to the package directions.
*You will be making 1 color at a time - leave approximately 3 hrs. for hardening time before adding the next color. This is why it was a 2 day process but it was worth it - it's really easy to do & so fun to eat!*

2. Divide the liquid up among your cups - I used 9 oz. cups and poured approximately 1/4 cup of jello liquid and it made 12 cups total which were filled just below the top. It worked out perfectly.

I started with the bottom of the rainbow - purple/grape and worked my way to red/strawberry at the top.

Here we are halfway done (purple, blue & green)

My Lil Helpers mixing the jello

A completed Rainbow Jello Cup

You can add a whipped cream cloud if you like :)

 Then, enjoy!

What, doesn't everyone eat their jello wearing a tiara, lol!

No rainbow day is complete without some art so after tasting the rainbow we decided to "paint the rainbow"

Painting Rainbows

We hope you enjoyed our Rainbow Theme!

Next we will be exploring Spring Weather.
