Nvidia Drivers - Sound Issues

Ubuntu Version: 24.04
Problem Description:
I have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 (2 GB) graphics card that requires the Nvidia 470 driver.
With Ubuntu, I get no sound coming from the speaker on my monitor (which is attached by an HDMI cable).
My attempts to get the Nvidia driver installed and working properly have failed.

Note: When I run Windows 11, the Nvidia 470 driver installs automatically and the sound works fine.
Note: HDMI and NVIDIA Sound Issues on Ubuntu
Note: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1553090/nvidia-driver-470-not-compiling-properly-on-ubuntu-24-04-after-update

(1) Has Ubuntu made any recent updates to address this issue?
Or will Ubuntu possibly address this issue in the future?

(2) Would a different Nvidia driver work?
If so, which one?

(3) The Nouveau driver that is replacing the Nvidia driver also does not work.
Is there a way to get the Nouveau driver working properly?
Or, does Nouveau offer more than just one driver?

(4) Are there any drivers (other than Nvidia or Nouveau) that would work?
If so, what are they and how would I install them?

(5) If I revert to an earlier Linux kernel (as some suggest),
would that potentially cause other problems?

Thank you!

You mention release (24.04 LTS or noble) but don’t actually state which kernel stack (GA, HWE or an OEM kernel), but I do note the askubu link you gave mentions HWE/6.14

Building initial module for 6.14.0-24-generic

That actual HWE kernel doesn’t have long to live; it’s replacement has been visible for awhile now if you look, ie. a CLI enquiry here shows

 linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 | 6.14.0-37.37~24.04.1 | noble-security | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x
 linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 | 6.14.0-37.37~24.04.1 | noble-updates | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x
 linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 | 6.17.0-14.14~24.04.1 | noble-proposed | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x

I don’t know how it would be on the 6.17 kernel (backported from 25.10), but I’d expect nothing will be done on the 6.14 kernel that will soon be relegated to history.

Thank you for responding! I need to give you an update on my situation. I became frustrated with having a silent version of Ubuntu, so I uninstalled it and replaced it with Ubuntu 22.04.5. The Nvidia driver uploaded fast and easy, and now the sound works quite well. So, yeah, the kernel seems to be the culprit. Of course, now I worry about what kind of vulnerabilities I’ve opened myself up by running an older version of Ubuntu. Do you think it’s safe to just keep running Ubuntu 22? Are there any extra security precautions I should take? Thanks again!

22.04 will get security updates until April 2027, if you use the free-for-personal-use Ubuntu Pro even until 2032 … so no worries

Ubuntu 22.04(.5) LTS using the GA kernel is using 5.15; but 22.04(.5) with the HWE kernel stack is using 6.8; the 6.8 kernel being back-ported from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (GA) kernel.

If you’re using the 6.8 kernel on 22.04; then that was available on 24.04 anyway (6.14 being the HWE kernel stack option).

[ Ubuntu LTS releases have kernel stack choice; default stack set by install media; refer Kernel/LTSEnablementStack - Ubuntu Wiki for some more details if helpful ]

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS has two fewer years of standard and extended support than Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and older software of course; just as @ogra has already indicated.

Thanks to all! Yes, you’re right. My computer indicates that I am using kernel 6.8.0-90-generic. Good to know! I’ll use Ubuntu 22 for now. But I’ll make a note of the kernel’s availability for future reference.
