.su is the ccTLD for the Soviet Union. It is managed by the Russian Institute for Development of Public Networks (ROSNIIROS).[1]

History[edit | edit source]

On September 19, 1990, IANA assigned the Soviet Union .su as its ccTLD. However, after just 15 months, the USSR was dissolved. The domain was supposed to be phased out, as was the case for others like .dd (East Germany) and .yu (Yugoslavia), but that did not happen. The ccTLD for Russia, .ru, was only delegated in 1994.

ICANN has tried to terminate .su, but it has been kept on request by users and Russian lobbyists.[2][3] On February 6, 2025, PTI sent a private letter to the domain’s administrator, informing it of the planned phase-out by 2030, although no public announcement has been made yet.[4]
