Atheneum for Dec...1828

A Farewell To The Year

One of my favorite pastimes is to read a periodical for whatever year, as close to the calendar month/day that I am in at that time~ if that makes sense. I have a large library of early periodicals and enjoy being in the moment and reading something that so many others were reading on that same day, just a hundred or more years earlier. Last night I sat, had a cup of almond spiced tea, and read the December 1828 issue of The Antheneum, or Spirit of the English Magazine, published by John Cotton in Boston. The individual issues could be saved through the year, and then bound for a price of $3.50. If you did not want the six coloured plates of female fashions included, the price was only $3.00

I came across a very fitting poem I would like to share~ I have found many of the phrases quite relatable, and though you may enjoy reading it as well~ I wish all of my readers a very happy & healthy 2024~

A Farewell To The Year

Hark, friends, it strikes: the year's last hour:

A solemn sound to hear:

Come, fill the cup, and let us pour Our blessing on the parting year.

The years that were, the dim, the gray, Receive this night, with choral hymn,

A sister shade as lost as they, And soon to be as gray and dim.

Fill high: she brought us both of weal and woe, And nearer lies the land to which we go.

On, on, in one unwearied round~ Old Time pursues his way:

Groves bud and blossom, and the ground Expects in peace her yellow prey:

The oak's broad leaf, the rose's bloom, Together fall, together lie;

And undistinguished in the tomb, Howe'er they lived, are all that die.

Gold, beauty, knightly sword, and royal crown,

To the same sleep go shorn and withered down.

How short the rapid months appear Since round this board we met

To welcome in the infant year, Whose star hath now for ever set!

Alas, as round this board I look, I think on more than I behold,

For glossy curls in gladness shook That night, that now are damp and cold.

For us no more those lovely eyes shall shine, Peace to her slumbers! drown your tears in wine.

Thank Heaven, no seer unblest am I, Before the time to tell,

When moons as brief once more go by, For whom this cup again shall swell.

The hoary mower strides apace, Nor crops alone the ripened ear;

And we may miss the merriest face Among us, 'gainst another year.

Whoe'er survive, be kind as we have been, And think of friends that sleep beneath the green.

Nay, droop not: being is not breath; 'Tis fate that friends must part,

But God will bless in life, in death, The noble soul, the gentle heart.

So deeds be just and words be true, We need not shrink from Nature's rule;

The tomb, so dark to mortal view, Is Heaven's own blessed vestibule;

And solemn, but not sad, this cup should flow,

Through nearer lies the land to which we go.

Another Wedding &...

Another Finish!

Three weddings in less than thirty days.....I certainly hope my youngest isn't planning to get married anytime soon. My son Josh got married this weekend~ such a beautiful wedding! They say a family tree grows over time...I feel like ours has exploded all at once, but in a good way.

I also wanted to share this beautiful finish from one of my students! Frances is in my Gum Work, The Art of 17th c Gummed Silk class that is currently running. It's not even over yet and she has made this stunning dome top casket of her own.

I am just so proud of her! I love her colours and design~ and that the three flowers stand up along the top like pretty little jewels on a crown.

Making and working with gummed silk is so much fun, once you start you can't stop! If you are interested in making your own, you can click the link above to find out more about the class.

I hope you have a great week ~Happy Stitching!!

My Summer Rollercoaster

2 Weddings in 3 days & a Finish...

Oh my golly this year has been a handful.  I am still trying to get back to my olde self.. I just feel like I got on some rollercoaster from hell and can't get off. A week after I got my staples out we were off to Durango Colorado (a trip my husband had planned for a year and would not let me out of). About a week after that Pip and I drove up to Washington to see my parents. A week after we got home from that, our oldest daughter got married!

Two days later, my middle daughter got married! School starts here on the 9th of August, so I am actually really looking forward to some quiet days. Would that be possible? I sure hope so. I don't have the energy I used to have, and feel honestly like I just want to sit and cry my eyes out for about a week, about what I don't know, and then maybe go to sleep until January of next year. I'm just worn OUT.

I have been working on backorders in between all the happenings, painting aLOT, and on my lacquering days and evenings managed to get the center panel for the INSIDE of my short flat top casket finished. I dressed her like one of my dollys~she wears real pearls and real garnet jewels, and I am very proud to say, she has a head of my own hair. I am super pleased with how she came out. When things settle maybe ill post about her in more detail, or take a little video.

I hope you are finding time to get some stitching done & enjoying your days XOXOX

Yellowstone National Park

SO ...Much....to See

The second day we were in the park Josh & I had a day hike planned to see the Petrified Forest. I have been to the single petrified tree several times...but never the forest. The hike is a 'strenuous' level of hike, so Josh was the only one who would go with me. All I can say, is,  it was worth it, it was awesome.
I took about a zillion pictures of buffalo~ they were all shedding..but still looking quite majestic.
I love the Buffalo! This time of year, in June, all the mommys had their little babies by their sides~ they are affectionately called 'red dogs', because they're so red.

Last time we were at Yellowstone, they were working on a new parking area at Fairy Falls, for the new trail they made up to the 'Grand Prismatic Overlook'. It opened the day after we left, so it was a must go to. FINALLY! To be able to see and appreciate the entire Grand Prismatic Spring! I could never really see anything from the boardwalk~ between all the people on it, and all the steam, it was never one of my favorite spots. Its beautiful from the overlook tho~ it's a great trail that IS handicap accessible. If your planning a trip...it's a must see.

So Josh & I got up early in the morning for our hike...had to make the drive from Madison campground to the Lamar Valley....it was great~ didn't pass a single car on the way. Matter of fact, we had Tower Falls all to ourselves at 6am...not another soul there!

It was first week of June, and yes, still snow in spots.  It snowed the day before we got there actually....but most of the park was snow free and in full spring wildflower bloom~ just beautiful.

Did you know that the Petrified Forest in Yellowstone is the only place in the entire world that trees  have been petrified standing, with their root systems intact? Yep~ it's amazing. Along the trail, they are everywhere~ big small, some on their sides....it's a hard place to find, so if you want to go , definitely recommend a guide book. When it says the level is 'strenuous' and describes parts of the trail as 'inhumanely steep'..(yes, that is a quote from the guidebook!) ....they're not kidding...but its soooo worth it!

 The trees are huge

At the top, is this giant redwood~ 26 feet in circumference! What is really great tho, is that you can walk around down underneath it, and see the petrified roots.

Also on the low side of it, are these two towering trees

As if that wasn't great enough...on the way back to the campground, we saw a mamma bear and two cubs.  I have been to Yellowstone so many times, and rarely see any bears...this trip...NINE bears!

Yellowstone National Park

A Glorious First Day!
Yellowstone National Park is one of my favorite places. I never ever get tired of  it~ it's just a magical place, each and every time we visit. One of husbands favorite stops along the way, is the Fountain of Youth RV Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming. We drive up from southern Colorado, and get there around 2ish pm, to enjoy a nice quiet afternoon in the hot springs. From here, it's just about a 2 hour drive to Cody, about 45 minutes from the East entrance to Yellowstone.

Of coarse my little mini me is with me~ she loves riding in the car~ outside of the car, she could be found in the hood of my sweatshirt. I wear it backwards and she just fits in her little hammock perfectly!

There is actually a HOt Springs State Park in Thermopolis, as well as a really awesome Dinosaur Museum that you can even go help participate on the active dinosaur digs in the area, if that's your thing. This particular hot spring at the RV park is knows as Sacajawea Well~ they were actually drilling for oil here in 1918, and hit the mineral spring instead.

They have the water separated into three different pools~ the pool closest to the spring is off limits, as it is just about boiling hot, as the water reaches the far end, its still pretty warm!  I cant remember the exact amount of gallons it flows, but it flows freely thru the pools, with enough volume to fully replace all the water you see in less than a 24 hour period.

After our overnight in Thermopolis we were off to Yellowstone. We usually go in later July, early August...but this year, because of Emma graduating and my teaching schedule, we scheduled our trip to begin the first week of June.  Halfway across the park on the way to check in at our campground, Josh & I peeled off from the family group for a very special trip to the Old Faithful Inn.
Not many folks know that you can make reservations (well ahead of time mind you, as in a year before when you make your Yellowstone reservations!) to be part of the 'Flag Ceremony'. Simply put, you can actually make the trek up to the roof of the Inn with a Bellhop to take down the flags~ The National flag, and then the three state flags, one for each of the states Yellowstone is located in~ Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. The tour is limited, they only go up once a day in the evening, and only allow 8 people.

A trip to Yellowstone is not complete without a visit to the inside of Old Faithful Inn. Its absolutely spectacular~ the first 3 floors are open to the public. In the above picture, you can see the stairs leading upwards from the third floor, and then a very tree house looking...well...tree house!, way at the very top. This is known as the 'Crow's Nest', and when the Inn was built, the orchestra would play music from here.

As many times as I have been to the Inn...too many to count....I have never been allowed past the locked gate on the third floor. This is Zach, the Bellhop unlocking the gate for us!

Up a flight of stairs, there is a spacious landing that provides a bird's eye view of the entire Inn.

After climbing up several more flights of stairs, we arrive at the tree house~ it is said the Inn's architect had always wanted to build a treehouse and never had the chance, so he built one into the Inn.

Up yet another little flight of stairs from the tree house, are the doors leading out onto the roof

It was just amazing, is all I can say. Amazing views I never thought I would see

Josh got to take down the Wyoming flag

And it just so happened, Old Faithful erupted while we were still up on the roof~ best seat 'on' the house!

We watched a group of buffalo wander around the Inn afterward and then trekked back down the stairs on the roof. Theyre pretty steep~ I don't think I would really like going up and down them in the winter

And in perfect Yellowstone fashion, Josh and I had to mill about smartly for a little while longer, waiting for this buffalo get away from behind my car so we could leave! LOL it was an AWESOME first day...could things get any better than this? Well...actually yes they can...just wait

Warning: Proud Parent Moment!

He Makes Hand~Mades
I am super proud of my son Josh~ he has always loved to 'make' things. When he and the girls were super little, I can remember one year they stitched little pins from felt for their teachers for Hallowe'en. The girls whipped thru theirs, but not Josh~ he sat there for probably an hour, making sure his was perfect~ each and every little stitch. His favorite series on the TV was 'How its Made', until a new favorite started a couple of years ago, which is 'Forged in Fire'.  He decided after seeing that show, he wanted to make knives....but he didnt have a forge....so our 17yr old made his own out of some kind of metal wheel thing....dont ask me, I have no idea what it came off of~ but it works!  We have a coal seam that runs thru our property, so naturally, its a coal forge.
He graduated high school last year, and has paid his own way thru the welding program at college~ who can ask for more from a teenager, right???? Oh my golly.....  He made all his Christmas gifts last year, and is just getting better and better. He goes to school in the day, works after school as a math tutor at the college, and in his free time, makes glorious things he sells to pay for his tuition.

These are some of my precious bits! The knife at the top is not a knife, but a box opener~ this was my Christmas present last year.

I love the shape, and its perfect for opening boxes with

He made this mini cleaver and left it 'primitive' because I fell in love with it this way. He drifted the hole, and I love the hammer marks. This one is definately, me

He finishes his knives by hand as well~ he hasn't got a belt sander/grinder yet....so literally, he spent DAYS sanding and sanding this knife down to its mirror finish. Its got an exotic katalox wood handle and is soooooo smooth and comfy to hold onto

This was his first go at decorative file work on the back . I can't imagine what he will be making in a years time from now~ but it's exciting! We may have to come together and collaborate on a special something in the future.....my gears are turning

This last one is my letter opener...it's a little large I suppose, but he was practicing new techniques, and I fell in love with the mosaic pin in the handle......and anyways, some of my letters can be quite robust....and I wouldn't want to break a nail....ok, my nails break just looking at them, so yes, I needed this!

Josh has been making lots of hooks for folks, its fun to watch him make these and put the twists in. One can never have too many hooks.....and I am going to copy my friend Stacey and use two of them to mount my huge early rolling pin up on the wall
I have been trying to convince him to start an ETSY store, maybe he says. If you have a special bespoke knife you have always wanted made, but didn't have anyone to go to for such, or maybe need some hand forged hooks or some really awesome tent stakes....drop him a line at jkinn51@yahoo.com , I'm sure he would love to hear from you!

So Proud!
This spring has gone by in a flash~ I have been so swamped & stressed  I am surprised all my hair hasn't fallen out. Josh graduated from high school this past Friday and we couldn't be more proud of him.  I feel super lucky that graduation was so close to Mother's Day~ not only did I get an honor graduate, I also got to spend Mother's Day with my Mom~ something I haven't been able to do in over 20 years at least....probably more like 30. What a great weekend~ Im exhausted!

Things for me tend to roll in waves~ I end up working forever it seems and not getting anything done, then within a week or two, all sorts of things come together and get finished. I have been working on this blasted kitchen since I got back from Williamsburg, and finally, FINALLY~ its done. D.O.N.E. Im super excited, now I can get back to work on my things...I know my chi is there....just waiting to flow again...bring on the dollies...bring on the wood...and bring on the BEADS!!!! WOO HOOOOOO
Cheers to a Happy Summer to all of you!

Good Friday &

The Cristal Baschet

How many of you have heard of a Cristal Baschet? It's a fabulous water and glass instrument~ for me, in the same family as the Glass Armonica, or Hydrocrystalophone invented by Benjamin Franklin in the 1760s. The cristal Baschet is not that old tho, it was invented in the 1950s by the Baschet brothers in France. Glass rods are stroked with wet fingers to produce deep rich vibrating tones. I hope you all have a Blessed Easter, and enjoy this beautiful video~ one of my favorite French composers, Erik Satie, on an amazing French Cristal Baschet.

Having a Hard Time

Oct 28 2014~ Dec 23 2017
My precious little Prince Biscuit passed away on the 23rd Dec, and I am still having a hard time trying to keep it together. He wasn't just a little dog to me. My husband said to just say there was a death in the family, and leave it at that to avoid people rolling their eyes that I could be so upset over a pet. But I'm not like that...frankly, I could care less if someone rolls their eyes at me....and if they did, they dont know me anyways.  My oldest daughter gave me Biskie for Christmas in 2014, and hes been literally with me, by my side ever since. I just cant believe hes gone. My heart isn't broken, its crumbled into dust

It was a horrible Christmas...husband kept telling me to find happiness for the day, and I tried, but cried the whole day, children did too.  It's not the same without him~ hearing the jingles of the tags on his collar~ him getting the zoomies and running all over the house, constantly squeeking his toys or scooting them over the floor.  Bedtime is horrible, as he always told me it was time for bed by getting up and scooping on my pillow~ he slept on my pillow(not so much room for me, but I didnt care) or between my feet...and now hes not there

This summer when we went to Yellowstone, our olde Pyrenees Yetti, and my little ferret Flick both passed away. That was hard, but they were both very old, and we expected it, they both had long, happy lives. It was too soon for God to take my little Biskie....I still dont understand what I ever did wrong, that he would give me such a blessing, and then take him away.

Happy Sunday!

It's Half....& Half  Time!
Happy Sunday All! Well, it must be Christmas time...we finished putting up the trees today. It's 3.40....on Sunday, not much time left for stitching, but I am going to try and get a sleeve worked for one of my angels on my casket...havent put in a stitch in over a week and that actually makes me rather grumpy. I am celebrating getting the two trees up in the gallery with a  half & half in my favorite Harrods cup. Half eggnog, and half Piehole Pecan Pie whiskey~ ohhh my golly is it good. If you have never tried Piehole Whiskey....you are missing out. I dont care for Apple or Cherry...but the Pecan Pie, tastes exactly like a pecan pie....mmmmm.....tis the season to be Merry!

I put up two trees in the gallery this year, this one is only glass ornaments~ I left all the pictures today big, so you can see all the pretty ornaments. The Christmas Tree, is my favorite part of Christmas, for they hold all my most precious memories.

This trees especially, save for a couple very precious glass ornaments that have been gifted me, and my Hummels, this tree is most Dear~ these are all ornaments made by my family, many now gone. There are some cuties I have made too...and both Flemish Fantasy & Winter Queen joined the party this year~ they fit right in!
Speaking of Winter Queen~ (doesn't she look so pretty)...if you have a kit on your wish list, you only have until Dec 31st to get one~ she's almost gone! You can find out more about her here.
