Collections & Data

LIBIS makes the extensive and valuable collections of KU Leuven’s libraries, archives, heritage, and research findable and accessible through a variety of specialised portals and platforms. Limo is probably the most widely known collection discovery tool we support for KU Leuven researchers and students, but it’s just one of the many specialised environments we offer. Find out more about the rich and specialised collection and data discovery platforms we support and offer to our researchers, students, and wider audiences and dive into KU Leuven’s rich and diverse library, archival, heritage and research data collections.

Libraries

LIBIS works closely together with KU Leuven Libraries and its digitisation department in order to make their extensive and valuable collections more useful and usable to researchers, students and to the general public. In Limo’s collection discovery interface, KU Leuven libraries’ digital collections can be browsed through thematic collections, collections organised by material type, etc. Many collections are also accessible through a variety of specialised portals and platforms, some of which are also hosted by LIBIS.  Most of the digital documents are open to the general public and can be viewed via the common LIBIS viewer infrastructure, which includes a performant IIIF server, and a range of viewer applications.

Archives

LIBIS also works in close collaboration with KU Leuven’s University Archive, KADOC, and other archives in order to make their extensive and valuable archives and collections more useful and usable to researchers, students and to the general public. In addition to Limo, archives can be searched and browsed via scopeQuery which shows every document within its archival context. The records in the archives and collections contain many references to the ODIS database, which provides more information about the people, organisations, archives, events, places etc. related to the cultural and societal legacies of religion in modern society. Many collections are also accessible through a variety of other specialised platforms, some of which are also hosted by LIBIS. The digital documents in the archives and collections can be viewed via the common LIBIS viewer infrastructure. Some of the digital documents are open to the general public, while others are only accessible on request.

Heritage

KU Leuven owns unique collections of (academic) heritage which are very diverse in content. LIBIS provides specialized platforms to properly manage and make these varied collections (archaeological, scientific, documentary, art, museum ...) accessible. The platforms allow to search and browse the heritage records and to visualize the data in an appealing way. The records are enriched with authorities (e.g. ODIS, Art and Architecture Thesaurus – Getty Research Institute) which offers an unambiguous reference to a trustworthy representation and improves the interoperability of the data. Through the platform, virtual exhibitions can be created and end users can be enabled to participate digitally. Persistent and high-performance visualization of a high-resolution version of the collections is ensured and each object description has a persistent link (URI). The use of open systems and domain-specific standards ensure that data can be exchanged with other systems in various ways.

Research

LIBIS makes the diversity of KU Leuven research output globally findable and accessible through Limo Lirias and shares it with external portals such as Google Scholar and OpenAire for increased visibility. Other research information systems supported by LIBIS:

  • Lirias can be used by KU Leuven researchers to archive publications and register the metadata of (externally) published research output, ranging from conference proceedings to externally published datasets
  • RDR is the place to be for the FAIR publication and access to research data created by KU Leuven researchers, for which the metadata is automatically synced with Lirias and shared with external portals such as Google Dataset Search and OpenAire

More about our services for researchers

As a technology integrator specialised in FAIR data handling in every step of the research life cycle, LIBIS is a partner in several research infrastructure projects in collaboration with KU Leuven research groups. We can help to transform research data management needs into efficient and automated processes and take care of a diversified set of tasks.
