With Every Leave a Miracle...Card using Leaves Stamp Set and Gilding Powder

The signs are everywhere, especially in Alberta where the days are shorter, cooler and the leaves are already starting to change, fall is just around the corner. There is not much I do not LOVE about fall, it’s no coincidence I was drawn to Quietfire Design’s Leaves stamp set, now available through Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.

My friend Kerry and I will be hosting a Botanical Gel Plate Printing demo for the Great Canadian VIRTUAL Scrapbook Carnival. I used one of the prints I created while prepping for the demo. I scanned this print to my computer so I can use it over and over. I really loved how it turned out and the colours are so yummy!

I brushed a bit of Perfect Project on my paper, it helps embossing powder to stick ONLY where I have ink. Using the maple leaf stamp and Ranger’s Emboss It ink, I randomly stamped my base paper. I embossed the leaves with my Copper Scroll Gilding Powder ~ this always makes me happy!

I wrapped and tied a lovely piece of ribbon to my card. This ribbon is hand dyed in small batches by my bestie Kerry Engel [ www.engelbelle.com ].

A piece of copper twine adds some extra texture and plays so well with the
Copper Scroll Gilding Powder.

I stamped my
sentiment from the same collection onto a piece of Duralar and layered it over a piece of vellum cut to the same size. It is attached with the copper twine.

I hope this simple card inspires you to pull out some fall themed stamps or maybe add some new ones to your stash!

CHEERS to sweater weather!

Wine Is Sunlight Gift Card

Hello and happy Monday! Kim here today with a simple but fun card share. As a wine drinker I love to give and receive wine. I also like to always include a handmade card or tag with the bottle of wine for a personal touch.

Quietfire Design / Wine is Sunlight / card designed by Kim Gowdy

My card was made using the Quietfire Design set, Wine is Sunlight. It is one of my first sets acquired in my Quietfire Design collection and still remains one of my favourites!

For this card I knew I wanted my Southern Ridge chipboard wine bottle a deep warm purple, almost black but not! I grabbed some acrylic paints and custom blended a purple, black and beige to get the look I wanted. I used my trusted colour wheel to guide me through choices that would play well with that purple undertone. When using a colour wheel let it guide you, but remember you do not have to aim for perfection. As you see, my green has a bit more blue than the colour wheel, but I’m OK with that!

I used the green and yellow inks to add colour to the bottom and left side of my card which left a nice spot for my sentiment to sit.

My sentiment and wine bottle were embossed with Modern Gilding Powder - Copper Scroll! I adore this colour and use it often! I LOVE how it turned out!

I had some old, dried out metallic gold paint that I brushed on over the grapes to give the look of a label. I was surprised that it just needed to have some water sprayed over it to bring it back to life. I try hard to add old product from my stash to most projects ~ this was a WIN!

Before I permanently adhered my wine bottle, I felt I needed a bit more on the card, so I pulled out my Colorbox Spritzers [another OLD product in my stash!] and added a splash of colour. I made a quick mask to cover my quote so the splatter would not detract from the sentiment. I edged with some Vintage Walnut Distress Ink and secured my wine bottle!

Now, it’s ready to gift with a yummy bottle of Merlot or Syrah 🥰

Gilded Tulip Garden

Happy Monday! [...just in case you need to know the day of the week] To those essential workers who are still heading to work ~ THANK YOU! To those who are now home social distancing ~ THANK YOU! In the midst of all this change in the past weeks, I do find some comfort in my craft room, even if my creativity struggles to surface.

This week I played with the newest colours added to Quietfire Design’s Modern Gilding Powders line. The colours are gorgeous, soft and swoon worthy! I wanted to used them all, so decided to make a garden of flowers...in hopes of finding some spring vibes in our very, winter like weather!

I added some Distress Oxide inks to some watercolour paper, to create an illusion of grass, sky and sunshine. I chose watercolour paper so I could “pull” some colour from my Tombow markers in another step.

After my background was completed, I made a stencil from cardstock using the Elizabeth Craft Designs Butterflies and Star Sprays die, designed by Suzanne Cannon. I used a foam makeup sponge to tap some acrylic paint onto my background through the butterflies. Every garden needs butterflies!

Next to make some flowers! I very loosely drew tulips and cut them out out cardstock. Using an Emboss It Dabber from Ranger, I covered my tulips with embossing and poured my Gilding Powders over top! Guess what...even the worse drawn flowers will look amazing, so give it a try!

I cut out the word Spring from the 4 Seasons die and embossed with Dragon Berry Modern Gilding Powder, a favourite from the first release of colours.

With my flowers and quote all ready, I decided how I wanted my placement. With my Tombow markers, I drew stems for my tulips and used my water brush to “pull” the colour. This allows for more of a water colour effect and softer lines! I did the same for some grass and added a few pencil lines for depth.

In signing off today, I encourage you to play. This is not my favourite card I have ever created, it did however let me play with product that has been waiting for me, it took my mind away from the constant chatter of COVID 19 news and play lets your creativity grow...it’s part of the process.

Have a healthy week!

Mixed Media Cardmaking ~ Every Day is a Journey

WOW! Kim here, the days go by so quickly between my blog post schedule, and here we are in March already. Despite the fast passing of time, I’m really thrilled to have more winter behind me! I find myself turning to warm colours in my projects, those that represent sunshine and sunsets. It’s not a conscious choice, but a readiness. Not surprising than, is that my project started with an older background in my stash with just these colours!

I added some random placements of the QFD Grid stamp to my background.

Using a mix of gesso & gel medium [~1:3], I brushed it where my focal points would be. This translucent layer visually recedes the background so the focal points can come to the forefront. My image is glued on using a glue stick.

I stamped a quote from the QFD Every Day is a Journey set onto some deli paper with archival ink. This next technique is one of my favourites!

Tear around the quote and adhere to card using matte gel medium. When using tissue or deli paper in this way, the paper becomes almost transparent, especially with the gesso underneath! This allows you to have a perfectly stamped image over a rough surface! No concerns about trying to go back and stamp areas that got missed due to texture!

When my layers were all dry, I lighted brushed my card with Perfect Project powder. This reduces static for easier embossing.

My favourite ink to emboss with when using colour is Distress Oxide. It stays nice and juicy while providing a crisp image. I always try to match my colours, so it’s forgiving if I miss a spot with the embossing powder. Using a cardboard and plastic tube as my ‘stamp’ I added some circles over my project.

The QFD Modern Gilding Powders I used were Gothic Black and Dragon Berry but there are many more gorgeous colours to choose from, you need to check them all out! I love the texture and shine these circles add to my card.

As my final steps, I added a grungy border and did a bit of mark making using Dylusions paint pens. I am happy with how it turned out and I LOVE that quote!

Thanks for checking out my project! I understand it may not be everyone’s style but mixed media is so fun and forgiving! It challenges my brain and really teaches me how my products work. I hope you try one or two of these ideas on a future project...or just for fun!

Dear Santa...Let Your Heart be the Light!

let-your-heart-be-the-light-kells-gold-distress-oxide-kim-gowdy

Hello and Happy Thursday, November 28th! How did we get to the end of the month already? With less than a month before Christmas, there is still lots of card making and gift buying to do (at least for me!). I have been so inspired by all the wonderful cards shared on the Quietfire blogs this past month and thought I’d add one more to the mix.

My card quickly came together as soon as I saw this wonderful quote from the ‘Let Your Heart be Light’ collection of stamps! The two little boys from Tim Holtz’s Idea-ology Paper Dolls play so perfectly with the sentiment!

I used the Leaf and Snowflakes Spray stencil with some white acrylic paint on a piece of Creative Scrapbooker’s Superstock. Using the three colours of green Distress Oxide inks, I blended the colours over top of the snowflakes and spritzed with water for even more texture. I buffed the snowflakes to remove the ink and make them pop.

My sentiment was stamped and embossed with the Kells Gold Modern Gilding Powder. I love the shine and texture it provides. I also edged my cardstock border very randomly and embossed with the same Kells Gold Modern Gilding Powder, it’s the perfect way to bring your focus into the card!

Be sure to add this fun stencil and stamp set to your Christmas card making kit. The sentiments are perfect for every card you send! Of course no craft room would be complete without a few (or ALL!) jars of Modern Gilding Powders! Happy Card making!

Meet the Quietfire Modern Gilding Powders!

Meet the Modern Gilding Powders!

I'm so excited to share this brand new product with you!  We now have bright beautiful detail embossing powders that can take on the look of hammered metal or brightly burnished precious metals. They are so much fun to play with!  You can't imagine how many times I've said "Oh, Wow!" when I've used them.  These powders are co-branded with Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.

There is nothing that equals traditional gilding, but we don't all have the time or inclination to spend the time learning it.  That's where these come in!  They're fast and beautiful!

We have six gorgeous colours and there is so much you can do with them! I've named them with a nod to calligraphic tradition:
Kells Gold
Burnished Silver
Copper Scroll*
Gothic Black
Acanthus Teal
Dragon Berry

*Did you know this was the name of one of the Dead Sea Scrolls?

Now are you wondering how Dragon Berry fits into calligraphic tradition?  Rumour has it there was dragon blood in ancient inks..... okay.  I thought that was a bit harsh sounding and the colour is more berry coloured (it's gorgeous!) so it became Dragon Berry!

Let me show you a few things that you can do with these Gilding Powders.
Use them with rubber stamps.

Gilded with Kells Gold with May Peace be Your Gift

Always Believe with Dragon Berry

Use them on diecuts.
Moments diecut with Kells Gold
Here is an example of raised gilding - Modern Gilding Style!  Beautifully smooth raised gilding.  Sure beats stirring slaked plaster for a week, huffing and puffing and painstaking burnishing!  (Although I have had great joy doing all that.)

Faith diecut with Burnished Silver

Use the Modern Gilding Powders to make backgrounds.
You can have the hammered metal look or smooth surfaced.  You can spread multiple powders to created a variegated surface as I did by using Kells Gold and Burnished Silver.

Copper Scroll hammered metal background (Flourished Star is here!)

Burnished Silver smooth background (Cherish is here!)
Kells Gold and Burnished Silver mixed background (Shine is here!)

Use them with your hand lettering - and again you can get  the smooth or hammered look!

Gothic Black with hand lettering - glossy black black BLACK!

Join us here on Quietfire Creations to learn more great ways to use the Modern Gilding Powders.  Also visit us on Facebook where we are live most Thursday afternoons with all sorts of projects!  Watch for hand lettering and gilding videos, too.
Enjoy the Modern Gilding Powders!
