Sketch Challenge at Retro Rubber Beach Scene

We have a clean and simple sketch for you to give a try at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog.  It should be fun to see what you create!  I gave it two tries and had fun with both!

This is actually what I decided I really liked for this challenge.  It reminds me of wall art where the scene is stretched over several panels on the wall.

  •  The stamp is Hero Arts Color Layering Waves from 2019.  I used Altenew inks in Sand Dunes, Rocky Shore, Iceberg, Eastern Sky, Ultramarine, Arctic, Caribbean Sky, Persian Blue, and Sapphire.
  • The sentiment is from another Hero Arts set Mountains at the Lake.  The flying bird silhouettes are also from this set.
  • The die cut Adirondack chair is Taylored Expressions and a scrap of Distress paper was used.  To get the chair to face the direction I wanted I actually cut it in reverse and them flattened the rolled edges on the die cut.
  • The background texture is a press plate by Altenew named Burlap.
  • All the edges of the image and the sentiment were inked with the Sapphire ink.

This is my first try:

  •  For color inspiration I used Color Cube card 692.
  • The birds are from Technique Tuesday's Chickadees 2.0 released in 2017.  They are stamped in VeraFine Clair Nocturne and head embossed in iridescent embossing powder.   Then colored with Prisma color pencils and die cut with coordinating dies.
  • The chickadees are mounted on My Favorite Things Die-Namics Wonky Stitched Rectangles which are then mounted to a pre-printed A2 card base.
  • The sentiment is stamped on a matching piece of cardstock and die cut with the coordinating die.
  • Everything is adhered together for a quick finished card!

I hope that you will share you sketch inspiration with us over at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog!

Pretty color challenge for Retro Rubber

Where I live we are still in the midst of winter, not quite spring so it was fun to play along with this color challenge and look forward to warmer weather and blooming plants!

Somehow color challenge reminds a bit of spring in Japan (or Washington D.C.) with the blooming Cherry Blossoms.  I was fortunate as a teen to spend a spring in Japan enjoying the beauty of all these light pink flowers, with dark magenta centers.  Looking through my stash I found this Blooming Branches from Technique Tuesday circa 2019.

  • Focal image image is stamped in VersaFine Clair Shady Lane and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  Sentiment is stamped in the same way.
  • Pulled out an old coloring media, EK Success Chalks in several palettes.   With small applicators it is easy to shade and quickly color the image.
  • Waffle Flower A2 Piercing Dies are used to die cut the focal image and the backing layer.
  • To add a little interest the A2 card base is stamped with the same image with VersaFine Clair in Shady Lane several times around the edges.
  • The layers are adhered to the A2 card base with dimensional foam adhesive.

This was a fairly quick and easy card to put together.  In fact I tried a slightly different version as well using Technique Tuesday's Wild Roses released in 2016.  Added yellow to the centers of the roses to match what they look like in nature.

Which one do you like better?  Thanks for stopping by and know that your comments are appreciated!

luck o' the Irish challenge at Retro Rubber

Here we are creeping to the end of February already and a new challenge from Retro Rubber.  Time to get ready for March and of course everyone is Irish come March 17th!  So let's celebrate with a little luck O' the Irish!

There are so many things to work from with this challenge image.  I choose the Celtic and four leaf clover theme.

I knew this background image was perfect.  It is a red rubber stamp mounted on wood from about 1990, "an excerpt of a story from the books of Kells" made by Judi-kins.  This was one of my favorite companies in the 90's and 00's with all of their themed international stamps.
  •  The image is stamped in Memento Bamboo Leaves on the front of an A2 size card base and on a light green cardstock.  The resulting green cardstock is die cut to a frame with dies from Waffle Flower.
  • The "lucky" die cut is from Concord & 9th Lucky die and stamp set.   The sub-sentiment is from the same set and is stamped in Memento Bamboo leaves as well.
  • The four leaf clover is an ancient Quickutz die and is used to die cut several colors of coordinating green from my scraps stash.
  • All the layers are adhered together.

I hope you enjoy playing along with the challenge from Retro Rubber

A sketch for Retro Rubber using Taylored Expressions

Now that we are back in the groove of playing with fun challenges, we at Retro Rubber have a fun sketch challenge for you!

Recently I've been inspired to play more with my new Color Cubes and explore different color combinations. Creating my own backgrounds and supporting colored cardstock makes this super fun!

  • Using Color Cube #98 I started with Altenew inks in Teal Tempest, Canyon Clay, Coral Red, Amber Blaze, and Toasted Mauve.
  • The background stamp is Four Seasons by Taylored Expressions released in 9/2022 with matching stencil is stamped in Tuxedo Black.   Using Color Cube #98 I selected Altenew inks in Teal Tempest, Canyon Clay, Coral Red, Amber Blaze, and Toasted Mauve to color in the stencil.
  • The focal image is part of the Whimsical Wildflowers stencil set in the Arch Nouveau collection.
  • Arch Nouvoeau dies are used to die cut the focal image and the backer.
  • Teal Tempest is used to distress the card base and backing for the focal image.
  •  Canyon Clay is used to color the contrasting cardstock.
  • The sentiment is from the set from Scrapbook.com and was released in 2022.  It is a staple for my birthday card creations!

Just a few reminders about our challenge guidelines:

  • We require stamps older than one year.  If we feel you are using newer stamps, you may be disqualified from the challenge without notification.
  • New papers/dies are OK – but you must use at least one stamp older than a year and describe the age in your blog post.

Retro Rubber is back! Anything goes challenge!

After WordPress closed down we here at Retro Rubber took a break to regroup.  Now we are back with everyone's favorite to showcase your latest, greatest make!  Anything goes at Retro Rubber!

Sometimes I just take time to sit and play with my crafting stash.  This is one of those times! I also had a huge number of birthday's coming up, so there was a purposed behind creating with some pretty images.

This is one of six cards created from this same stamped image.  All of the cards look different as the image was cut at differently and placed on the card front.
  • The image is Altenew's Flourishing Garden released in 2023.  The image is stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black.  I had a small selection of Altenew Fresh Die inks and used them to stencil in the layers.  Blue Horizons, Teal Tempest, Honeydew Glow, Lemonade Stand  and Peridote.
  • This kit include an embossing folder as well.  The cardstock I had to match wasn't large enough to create a full width card panel, so being creative I inked the edges in Teal Tempest after pressure embossing the cardstock.
  • After I decided on the placement of the floral images I trimmed the edges off of the card front and adhered the layers together.
  • Scrapbook.com Happy Birthday sentiment is stamped on yellow cardstock in the Teal Tempest and die cut.

Come and have fun with us and show us what you have created that is your favorite Anything Goes!  Just a few guidelines to follow:

  • We require stamps older than one year.  If we feel you are using newer stamps, you may be disqualified from the challenge without notification.
  • New papers/dies are OK – but you must use at least one stamp older than a year and describe the age in your blog post.

Books books books! at Retro Rubber

If you are a bibliophile this challenge is for you brought to you by Retro Rubber!  I will admit my stash was a bit scant when it came to images for this challenge.  I did go looking for ideas and came across some lovely images . . . but the spirit of this challenge is to use what you have!  So I resisted the urge to find a retro image elsewhere at went with one I already owned.

I will admit my stash was a bit scant when it came to images for this challenge.  I did go looking for ideas and came across some lovely images . . . but the spirit of this challenge is to use what you have!  So I resisted the urge to find a retro image elsewhere and went with one I already owned from TPC Studio released in 2010.  It was a part of a Back to School Set.  It is an image I have used on scrapbook layouts for back to school.

  •  The background is from a Judi-kins Stamp mounted on wood that has a copy right of 2000 printed on it.  An Excerpt of a story from the Book of Kells is the name of the stamp.  It is stamped in Versa Mark on Kraft cardstock.   My Favorite Things Wonky Stitched Rectangles is used to die cut the image.
  • The Books image is stamped in Versa Magic Jumbo Java and colored with Derwent Watercolor pencils.  The panel is cut with a smaller die from the MFT Wonky Stitched Rectangles.  (As a side note I just found out the MFT has closed!  I will miss this fun company!)
  • The thank you sentiment is a Studio G image from 2009 stamped in Versa Magic Jumbo Java.
  • Fiber is tie around the front panel and then adhered with dimensional foam adhesive.  The entire panel is then adhered to the card base.

We have  ton of fun over at Retro Rubber and would like to see how you play with this theme!   We do have a few guidelines:

  • We require stamps older than one year.  If we feel you are using newer stamps, you may be disqualified from the challenge without notification.

Tic tac Toe! Pick your favorites!

Tic Tac Toe stretches your imagination, as you selected which row or column to use!  Here is this fortnight's selection from Retro Rubber.

One of my favorite ways to color images is to use stencils.  For me the easy peasy way works best,  I've never really enjoyed coloring with alcohol pens.  One has to know what her skill set is!  I enjoy the Pinkfresh Studio images, and their first stencil sets came out with the long stamps that could stamp, color, and die cut all in one for multiple images.  This is the first of two cards created that met the Die Cut/Stencil/Sequins diagonal.

  •  Pinkfresh Studio's Sunflowers from March of 2022 is used to create the flower images.  Stamped in Memento Tuxedo Blank and colored with the stencil set in Memento Pear Tart, Bamboo Leaves, Rich Cocoa, Elderberry, Dandelion and Versafine Clair in Cheerful.  The set was released early to Support Ukraine, it was ready but not released--then the war in Ukraine began.  I love sunflowers too!
  • The background is Pinkfresh's Argyle Stencil with a very feminine touch done in Memento Dandelion and Elderberry.  Several different colors of sequins are used to decorate the intersections and are adhered with wet adhesive.
  • To add more interest a very old Spellbinders die, Floral Ovals from 2011 is die cut.  The center is die cut with a Spellbinders Petite Oval.  The frame is mounted to the base with dimensional foam adhesive.  The flowers are adhered to the frame, and supported with dimensional foam adhesive.
  • Scrapbook.com's Happy Birthday stamp and die set is the sentiment.  The cardstock was inked with Memento Dandelion then stamped in Elderberrty to carry the color throughout the card design.

Here is the second card from the same stamping session.

  • The background is Sizzix's 3D Textured Cobblestone with the edges inked in Versafine Clair Cheerful.
  • The card base edges are inked in Memento Pear Tart.
  • The Sentiment is Perfect Sentiments foiled with Auro Glimmer foil.

Do come and play with us at Retro Rubber, we would love to see your work!  There are a few challenge guidelines:

  • We require stamps older than one year.  If we feel you are using newer stamps, you may be disqualified from the challenge without notification.
  • New papers/dies are OK – but you must use at least one stamp older than a year and describe the age in your blog post.

Quick Graduation Card from a sketch

I was in the mood to get a ton of things done today and on the list was a graduation card for an announcement that came a few weeks ago.  A quick search for a card sketch challenge and I found this one over at Freshly Made Sketches 698 that made this card go together in just 15 minutes!

The graduate will be going to a well known university in California, so I choose those colors for the card.

  •  From my scraps bin I found crimson cardstock and stamped an acient grad cap by PSX probably 1998 or so in Memento Luxe Wedding White and heat embossed with white detail embossing powder.
  • The diploma is from Stampendous 1998 dated.  Stamped in Versafine Clair Nocturne and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.
  • The confetti is a stencil by Alex Syberis Designs called festive fun.  It is a two step stencil.  I used Altenew Mahogany Bark and Maple Yellow.
  • The sentiment is from Taylored Expressions Simple Strips Background and I simply edged the strip in Maple Yellow.
  • Adhered it all together and wooza, it is done.

Thanks for stopping by!

Sketch Time for Retro Rubber

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of July?  At any rate we have another sketch challenge over at Retro Rubber, one created by yours truly.

I didn't have specific images in mind when creating this sketch, but once it was time to make a card the stamps from Hero Arts release in 2017 of Color Layering Koi and Frame Cuts were a perfect fit.  When I lived in Japan as an exchange student I would marvel at the Koi ponds and gorgeous fish.

To maintain a sense of proportions I decided a A7 (5" x 7") would work best.  I used cool serene colors for this card because this card would be sent to my mother for my dad's birthday.  One his birthday she visits his columbarium at the Willamette National Cemetery.  I cannot be there is person, but want her to know that I am there with her.

  • The koia, leaves, and water lily were stamped in layers with Versa Magic in Thatched Straw, Mango, Aspen Mist, See Breeze, and Night Sky.
  • The diagonal strip is masked off, and inked in Thatched Straw and the words stamped in Mango.
  • The light aqua card base is trimmed to 4.75" x 6.75.
  • White cardstock is trimmed to 4.5" x 6.5" and a circle is die cut to match the sketch.
  • The bubble images are stamped inside the open area in Night Sky.
  • The base and white cardstock is layered and mounted with dimensional foam adhesive to the card front.
  • The sentiment is stamped in Night Sky and die cut with Fawn Cuts Banners and inked in Night sky as well.
  • The image layers are added to the card.
  • Nuvo Crystal Drops in Metallic Navy Blue are added to finish the card.

Crafting this card brought me peace too as I fondly remembered my Dad, it's been 3 years since his passing.  I am thankful for the parents that raised me!!!!

Please do join along with us at Retro Rubber.   We have a few simple rules.

  • We require stamps older than one year.  If we feel you are using newer stamps, you may be disqualified from the challenge without notification.

Color Challenge for Retro Rubber #259

Summer time!  We have a great color challenge for the next two weeks.  Please play along with us at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog.

Honestly my first impression was of the colors of our rival University in the state of Oregon.  BUT I decided I could work through the rivalry and go with flowers!

  • The flower image is Kind Cosmos from Technique Tuesday released in 2019.  Sadly, Technique Tuesday closed their doors a few years ago.  I am thankful for the smattering of smaller floral images with matching dies.
  • The image is stamped in Memento Luxe Tuxedo Black and heat embossed with black embossing powder.  Derwent Watercour Pencils are used to create the color gradient on the flowers and leaves.  Cosmos have very feathery foliage.   The matching die is used to die cut the image.
  • The Thanks sentiment is from TT Echinacea  set, and is water colored to match the flowers.
  • Pinkfresh Studio Slim Ornate Banner is used to create the shaped background.
  • Elizabeth Craft Designs Stitched Retcangles created the base from patterned paper.
  • All the layers are adhered together.

This card was fairly simple to put together, and the finished product is nice and simple for a thank you for summer time.  Thank you for stopping by!  Please play along with our Retro Rubber challenge!

Birthday theme time at Retro Rubber

If there is one type of card everyone needs it is a birthday card, so here is a challenge to add one to your stash OR have ready to send tomorrow!  Join us at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog!

I was inspired by the balloons in the inspiration to use a set I have had since Sept of 2017 and have played with only a time or two.  It is Concord & 9th's Happy Balloons Stamp and Die Set.

  •  What is really fun about this set Happy Balloons is that you can stamp designs or solids and create cute balloons.  I used the solid and one that creates dimension in the balloon.  The balloon image is stamped on vellum in Memento Cantaloupe, and then the texture layer is stamped over the image several times to create darker dots.  The image is die cut with the matching die.
  • Melon colored cardstock is die cut to create the balloon outline, banner and string.
  • Birthday is stamped in Memento Morocco on the banner and then the images are adhered together.
  • The background is stamped in Memento Teal Zeal on teal cardstock.
  • The edges of the card base are inked in Memento Morocco.
  • All the layers are adhered together, and TaaDaa a quick birthday card!

Please do join us over at Retro Rubber and play along!

A Special Birthday Card for the Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe boards are always fun, and so many different ways to for projects to be created.  Try your hand at this challenge from Retro Rubber.

My mom's birthday is at the beginning of June so I created a special card for her using one of Heartfelt Creations (HC) sets released in 2018, Butterfly Dreams.  I do miss the delicate whimsical images that Heartfelt Creations was known for as they retired in 2024.  Glad I have these to play with!

  • Butterfly Dreams paper pack was used for the background and banner.  The background is spritzed with Sheer Shimmer Craft Spray in Sparkle using the The Crafter's Workshop Mini Flutterby stencil.  It is easier to see in person. The edges are inked in Brilliance Pearlescent Ivy.
  • White cardstock was die cut the HC Regal Borders and Pocket die.
  • Butterfly Kisses Border is stamped in  Brilliance Pearlescent Ivy and heat embossed with iridescent embossing powder.  The images are watercolored with Memento Luxe dual tip pens scribbled on a work mat.  Angel Pink, Rose bud, New Sprout, Summer Sky, Danube Blue, and Tangelo are used.  The image is die cut with matching die and gently shaped with the flower shaping kit.
  • Purrfect Posies by HC released in 2019 creates the flowers with the stamp, die, and mold combination.  The flowers are water-colored  with Memento Dual Tip markers in Lilac Posies, and the leaves are water-colored with New Sprout.  The centers of the flowers are filled with Perfect Pearls and Prills in Sweet Shoppe by Artquest.
  • The sentiment is from the HC set and is stamped in Memento Luxe Lilac Posies and heat embossed with iridescent embossing powder.  It was hand cut and then edged in Brilliance Pearlescent Ivy.
  • The layers are carefully adhered together using liquid adhesive, glue dots and dimensional foam.

This labor of love did take awhile to create, but I am sure my Mom really enjoyed her card.  She saves them all and eventually returns them to me.

Please do join along with us at Retro Rubber and play along with our challenge.  We would love to see what you create!   We do have a few simple rules.

CAS Card sketch for Retro Rubber

A nice clean and simple sketch to play with over at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog.

This card uses several two different scraps from previous crafting sessions.

  • The vertical piece is created with the shaving cream method and All Purpose Inks on watercolor paper.  Thistle, Cerulean Blue, and Platinum were dropped on shaving cream and swirled with a toothpick.  Watercolor paper is kissed to the mixture and set aside to dry.
  • The pastel purple is created with a stencil and Fireworks! sprays in Lulu Lavender, Summer Sky, and Silvery Shimmer.
  • The sentiment is Great Impressions from Jan 2015 and is stamped in Delicata Silvery Shimmer and heat embossed with iridescent embossing powder.  The edges of the sentiment are inked and heat embossed as well.
  • Mauve cardstock is pressure embossed with Elizabeth Craft Designs Hearts Intertwined embossing folder.
  •  The layers are adhered together to finish a very clean and simple design Sympathy card.

Thank you for stopping in and please do join our fun at Retro Rubber Challenge.

Muted Spring Color Challenge at Retro Rubber

Spring has sprung!  Time for a fun color challenge over at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog.

This is a peachy orange with a touch of olive green and teal.  My choice was to use a Concord & 9th Triple Step Floral Frame stamp and die sets released in October, 2021.

  • The base layer is stamped in Versa Color Winter Green and Versa Magic Persimmon, Mango, and Red Brick.
  • Another layer of individual flowers is stamped in Versa Color Fresh Green, and the Versa Magic colors.
  • The frame die created a lovely outline that was inked in Mango.
  • The A2 card base is inked in Versa Color Fresh Green before assembly.
  • The individual flowers are die cut and layered over the base layer.
  • The sentiment, from the same set is stamped in Versa Magic Red Brick.

Thanks for stopping by and come play along!

Sweet Spring Flowers for Retro Rubber

Are there flowers blooming in your yard?  Not quite yet in mine here in Northern Minnesota--but soon.  I have starts going inside the house and visits to the Amish Greenhouses 45 minutes away are in the plans soon.  Our challenge at Retro Rubber for the next two weeks is to create a card with spring flowers.

I recently sat down and had a play session with a great set from Altenew in 2021, Build-a-flower Bearded Iris.  The lovely Iris comes in many colors and I experimented with several different choices.  Once I had the layering set up on my stamp platform I made eight different flowers in four different colors.

  • The leaves and stems are Memento in Pistachio, Bamboo Leaves, and Olive Grove.
  • The yellow Iris is Memento in Dandelion, Cantaloupe, and Tangelo.
  • The pink Iris is Memento in Angel Pink Lilac Posies, and Rose Bud.
  • The flowers and leaves are die cut with the matching die.
  • This background is Black-out Distressed Cardstock from Coordinations pressure embossed with Darice Damask embossing floder and then sanded to bring out the distressed green design.
  • The sentiment Happy Birthday is by Scrapbook.com from the set named the same from 2022 and is stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black on the green side of the cardstock used to make the embossed panel.  That way it matches perfectly.  BTW if you are looking for a very versatile Birthday greeting set, the one by Scrapbook.com has about any design you could want!
  • The corners are rounded on an A2 size card, and the layers are adhered together with wet glue and allowed to dry.

One of the cards was sent to my daughter, the others are in my stash for future use!

Challenge time with a Tic Tac Toe

Another two week challenge at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog.  This particular board was my choice, so super fun to play along!

The decision to use as much of the challenge of possible was easy!  I missed stitching and Sequins/gems as the card seemed complete at this point.

  •  The background is pearlized vellum pressure embossed with Darice Basket Weave embossing folder.
  • The stamp is Pink Fresh Painted Peony from March 2021.  It was stamped in Delicata Silver and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  This was one of the first stamp sets I owned that stencils were available to color the image.  Memento ink in Angel Pink, Rose Bud, Lilac Posies, Dandelion, Cantaloupe, Morocco, New Sprout, and Cottage Ivy.   The set also had a dies to match the stamps.  Very fun!
  • The Sentiment is Altenew Elegant Saying released in 2023 stamped in Delicata Silver and heat embossed to match the stamped focal image.
  • The front of the card was pierced on each edge of the vellum that was mounted to the card base.  The twine from my stash was threaded through and tied in a bow.

Your turn!  Play along with us at Retro Rubber and create your own card!

Sketch Challenge Fun at Retro Rubber

Time for a new challenge over at Retro Rubber.  Are you ready for some fun?  This sketch has several different shapes and layers to work into your card.

A few weeks back we attended a Memorial Service for a family member.  It was important to have handmade cards for each of the cousins.  This is one of the batch I created.  Plus I was able to prep a great sample for this challenge!

This card is a perfect example of using previous experiments to pull together a cohesive card with many layers.

  • The base layer is Imagine Creative Medium Interference.  This product is no longer available, I loved the result--but it dried out quickly in the jar.  There are other companies that are bringing similar product to market.  I used a Heidi Swap stencil from about 20 years ago.
  • The next layer is vellum stamped with Heartfelt Creations Large Elegant Word Background from about 2014.  It is stamped in Kaleidacolor Spectrum.
  • Watercolor paper is spritzed with Fireworks! Lilac Posies and let to dray.  It was then pressure embossed with Concord & 9th Quilted Card Front die.  Paper Studios flag punch creates the shape.  Great Impressions sentiment from 2015 is stamped in Memento Luxe Tuxedo Black and heat embossed with iridescent embossing powder.
  • A scrap of variegated gold metallic cardstock is trimmed to fit the sketch.
  • The final embellishment is a wax seal that was created from items purchased from Amazon.

Please join us and create a card with this sketch!

Everyone's favorite challenge, Anything Goes with Retro Rubber!

The title says it all, anything goes for a project at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog this fortnight.

I have a few oversize floral images in my stash and decided to play with one for this challenge.  It is the Altenew Bellowing Peonies from just last year, so barely a year old.  For some reason I really like peony images and this is a perfect example why!

It is almost a one layer card, and feels very sophisticated to me.

  • The Bellowing Peonies image is stamped in Tuxedo Black Memento ink.
  • The matching stencils add just the right layering to the image with Memento Angel Pink, Lilac Posies, Dandelion, Cantaloupe, Bamboo Leaves, and Pear Tart.
  • Some layers are very light handed, then the subsequent layer is more heavy handed to give the subtle colored look.
  • Altenew Rustic Burlap Press Plate is used to dry emboss texture into the image.
  • The edges are distressed to give it a hand-made paper feel.
  • The sentiment is stamped in Memento Lilac Posies and die cut.  The sub-sentiment is stamped in Tuxedo Black and also die cut.  Both are mounted with two additional die cuts glued behind to create more dimension.

This card has already been mailed to it's recipient.  It was meant to bring some encouragement!

Play along with our Anything Goes, challenge at Retro Rubber--you know you want to!
