Daily Kos: Accessibility

Daily Kos believes everyone should be able to read, participate, and engage with our community. Making the site accessible to people with disabilities is an important part of that commitment.

We aim to follow widely recognized accessibility standards, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2, and we continue to review and improve the site as new tools and best practices evolve.

As part of our 2026 transition to a modern WordPress-based platform, we worked to ensure that Daily Kos follows widely accepted web accessibility practices and works well with assistive technologies like screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other accessibility tools.

Our updated story page editor, built on WordPress’s block editor, gives writers and editors simple, built-in tools for creating proper heading structures and adding descriptive alt text to images. These are small things that make a big difference for readers who rely on screen readers or other assistive technology to navigate our content. We’ve also improved our error pages to explain what went wrong in plain language and help you get back to the content you were looking for.

We’re also taking a close look at our colors. The Daily Kos orange has been at the heart of our brand identity since we started, but it doesn’t meet current WCAG contrast standards. We’re working to create color contrast ratios that meet accessibility standards and build accessible color palettes, since our current orange-based palette doesn’t support color-blind alternatives. We plan to evolve our orange so it’s both recognizable and accessible. More on that soon.

We know accessibility is an ongoing process, and there’s always more work to do. If you encounter a barrier on Daily Kos or have ideas for improving the experience, we’d love to hear from you.

Your feedback helps us make Daily Kos better and more accessible for everyone in our community.
