'Alpine Divorce' is a new phenomenon that is common enough to exist.

Couples going on hikes or tramps reach exhaustion at different stages, leading to one person being left behind. An exhaustion which now seems to have extended to relationships.

Adrift NZ Owner and Tongariro Crossing Guide told Heather du Plessis-Allan that being under physical stress is likely to heighten tensions in strained relationships.

'When you do that, the best of the worst comes out of you.'

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now it's time to talk about alpine divorce. This is
apparently a thing that is happening enough around the world
to now get media attention. Basically, what happens is a
couple goes on a hike or a tramp or a
mountain climb together and one partner leaves the other one
behind because the other one's dragging a bit Stu, and
that's the end of the marriage, end of the relationship.
Stuart Barclay is the owner of a drift end Z.
He runs tours of the toung that it'le crossing and

(00:21):
is with us. Now, Hi, Stewart, Yeah, I hea that
it's good to talk to you again. Have you seen
this happen?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah, I just don't like to say, first off, I'm
not really qualified to be a marriage counselor that I
am a do guide. People up over the Tongra crossing
here have done for God over court of a century
and yet we have seen some of it, to be honest,
not much experience of it on a one day hike.
More frequency on multi day hikes, where you know, the

(00:51):
three days with each other's almost too much and possibly
good test for if you're kind of doing a test
drive on a marriage.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
But how can you say three days with each other
is too much? I mean half the time your bloody
lived together. So I mean and obviously, obviously, Stewart, there
is underlying tension right in the relationship already. But why
is it that going on a hike breaks them.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Well, you're putting yourself under a bit of physical duress,
and you know when you do that, the best of
the worst comes out of you. And I'd have to
say most Kiwi's have a good hiking ethos and that
as you stick together. Some other culture is not really
quite the same. But yeah, I have to say most

(01:33):
Kiwis have experienced they have pretty much know the mountain
safety rule that you start off together and you stick
together and you go as fast as the slowest person.
Now I have seen I have seen issues.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Now, Stewart, this is a surprise to me because I
thought the rule was if one of you was dying,
the other one has to try to save their own
life and leave the other one behind.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Oh good luck with that?

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Is that not the rule on the mountain? If you
see someone dying, don't try to say them, just save yourself.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Well, yeah, I don't think That's really the right thing
to do, is it. No matter whether it's male fever
or whatever, it depends on you know, really what your
insurance is like I suppose, and.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Just how much you really want them around for the
rest of your life. Stuart has always made us good
to talk to. You look after yourself. Stuart Barclay, a
drift end z owner.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
