Jason Ang – Director Sustainability, Meranti Green Steel Speaking at MitKat Annual Risk Symposium - APAC Edition 2026 (MARS APAC), Jason Ang reframed climate physical and transition risk as a core intelligence, security and loss prevention issue and not merely a sustainability concern. He highlighted how physical climate change risk directly impacts operational resilience through heatwaves, floods, storms, water stress, logistics disruption and regulatory transition risks. These factors, he noted, translate into downtime, financial losses and market as well as reputational exposure. Jason emphasized early-warning climate intelligence, dynamic scenario testing and ecosystem-wide collaboration as essential measures. He urged organizations to treat partners including suppliers, logistics providers, insurers and utilities as intelligence sources rather than transactional vendors. He concluded that embedding climate intelligence into everyday decision-making is critical for strengthening resilience, protecting assets and maintaining credibility with customers, insurers and investors over the long term. 🌍 Yesterday, the World Economic Forum published the Global Risks Report 2026, ahead of the annual meeting in Davos taking place next week from 19 to 23 January. Environmental risks are being deprioritized in the short term. Over the next two years, almost all environmental risks decline in perceived severity and ranking compared to previous years. This does not reflect environmental improvement, but rather the growing dominance of geopolitical, technological, and societal concerns in near term decision making. The longer term perspective tells a different story. Looking ten years ahead, environmental risks dominate the global risk landscape. In the WEF’s long term Top 10, five environmental risks stand out: 🟢 Extreme weather events (1.) 🟢 Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse (2.) 🟢 Critical change to Earth systems (3.) 🟢 Natural resource shortages (6.) 🟢 Pollution (10.) The message is clear: climate change is not a distant threat, but a persistent, long-term risk already unfolding. Addressing it requires decisions today that are aligned with long term system stability, rather than short term attention cycles. Ignoring environmental risks does not make them disappear. Key Success Path from the Discussion: Turning Water into Results The core takeaway from the discussion with Saroj Kumar Jha is that water becomes a growth and resilience driver only when delivery systems are fixed. Successful countries follow a clear path: (1) Policy clarity first, cost-reflective tariffs, allocation rules, and regulatory certainty to unlock finance; (2) Institutions before infrastructure, strong, autonomous utilities and basin authorities that can plan, operate, and repay; (3) Integrated execution, linking water with food systems, urban development, energy, and climate adaptation; (4) Smart use of capital,blended finance and performance-based investments focused on efficiency gains, not asset expansion alone; and (5) Outcome discipline, measuring reliability, loss reduction, financial viability, and resilience, not just spending. The discussion reinforces a simple success logic: water security scales when governance, finance, and data converge around delivery, not declarations.

🌍 I am excited to share that I have co-authored a new article published in the Business Strategy and the Environment (ABS 3-star) journal on Wiley Online Library! Our study empirically shows that US-listed firms facing higher climate change risks tend to diversify their customer base, reducing reliance on a few major clients to lower financial and operational vulnerabilities. This negative relationship holds even after robustness and causality checks. We also find that the effect is stronger for firms with higher CSR performance, greater innovation, higher fixed asset intensity, and those outside environmentally sensitive industries.
