Abundance

You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.

Remember

In the midst of difficulty, the Psalmist wrote,
"When I was in distress, I sought the Lord;
    at night I stretched out untiring hands,
    and I would not be comforted."

The poet continues,
"Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
 the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
I will consider all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” Psalm 77 NIV

And so, in the midst of suffering, I recall the goodness of the Lord in the form of this photo that I took three years ago, when in another time of difficulty, God demonstrated his love and faithfulness to me by through His creation.

A room at the top of the house

As a child, I loved Frances Hook's Bible story illustrations. I was especially fascinated by the story titled "Elisha Had Kind Friends" taken from 2 Kings 4:8-11, which tells of how a Shunammite woman built a special room at the top of her house, with a bed, a table, a chair and a lamp, for Elisha to use when he passed by.

I didn't have to build an extra room onto the top of my house, but it did need to be remodeled and furnished with a bed, a dresser, a desk, a bookshelf, a mirror and lamps.

This room isn't for an itinerate prophet; it's been prepared for an unaccompanied minor in Samaritas' refugee foster care program

Lifted

Tuesday was a discouraging day. Despite my best efforts, I felt myself slipping into a dark pit.

I've been following a daily Bible reading plan this year. Wednesday morning the first passage was from Psalm 27, where verse 11 reads:

I would have lost heart,
unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.

The next passage was from 2 Samuel 22. Here is verse 7.

In my distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried out to my God;
He heard my voice from His temple,
And my cry entered His ears.

This was followed by Psalm 91. Verse 15 says:

He shall call upon Me,
and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.

By the time I finished reading, I no longer needed to struggle to keep from sinking into the pit. I had been lifted out.

Promises

Not one of all the LORD's good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.

Rock

Arch Rock, Mackinac Island
The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2 NIV

To know him

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. Ephesians 1:17 NIV

Heritage

Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah. Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This young woman, who was also known as Esther, had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died. Esther 2:5-7 NIV

Blessing

"...I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
Genesis 22:17-18 NIV
