Facing Giants

My cousin gave us the movie "Facing The Giants" as a gift for Christmas. We had actually rented it when it first came out on DVD, but I was not in the frame of mind at that time to watch it and absorb it for the real message it was sending. We watched it again on Sunday night and I realize now why I was having such a hard time.

Looking back, I was facing more than one giant in my life and quite frankly was ready to give up. I knew God, acknowledged God, but did not have a personal relationship with the Lord. Did I forget to mention that I was a bit of a control freak? I had a really hard time giving up control of my circumstances to God...that is until I almost lost everything I loved and held so dearly. Sometimes you have to be at your breaking point to realize who's in control. I had to surrender it all. C.S. Lewis said, "Pain is God's megaphone." This is his way of waking us up from spiritual slumber if you will. I needed a wake up call.

Our Pastor put it beautifully at our Christmas Eve service when he said and I'm paraphrasing, "You can have a close encounter with God but miss the personal experience." My cousin that I mentioned earlier, she and her husband lost their only son 8 years ago in an automobile accident. A personal relationship with the Lord has given them the strength they've needed when they didn't have it on their own. Will was in college and planning to be a minister. God has helped them face this giant day in and day out. He can help you face yours too.

I urge you beginning now and into 2009, to turn your giants over to God. Surrender it all to him and lay it at His feet. If you are suffering from bitterness, anger, depression, facing divorce, addiction, an eating disorder, financial struggles...whatever your giant may be..give it to God. Let Him fight for you.

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Embrace Life,
Ginger

Family Blessings

Yesterday my sister drove my parents here to visit us! We were so excited to have them come and visit if only for overnight. Mama and Daddy haven't been able to travel to our house for over a year now because of health reasons. Before we left their house on Friday, daddy told me he really wanted to come and visit us and see our Christmas decorations. He and mama never get to see our house at Christmas.

Usually when mama and daddy come, we take them to Captain Steve's Seafood, but Tony cook fried salt and peppered catfish fillets last night and fried oysters. For sides we had blue cheese cole slaw, fries and hushpuppies. They absolutely loved it. Back home we used to have fish fries on a regular basis and the folks in the community would all get together and fry fish in the back yard! I miss that sometimes.

We enjoyed spending the evening just talking and sharing stories from the past. Speaking of folks in the community and stories from the past, mama retold the story about the summer that daddy got so sick when Jan and I were very little. Daddy suffered a massive blood clot to his heart. He was working on the farm, mending fences on July 4, when it happened. The doctors had pretty much given up on him. Daddy tells the story of being able to hear Dr. Merrit say "I've done all I can do." He asked the other doctor to take over. Daddy was a fighter and so was mama....a prayer warrior.

He survived that clot and stayed in ICU for 31 days. The community rallied around our family. There were acres and acres of tobacco to be harvested as well as other crops. There was no way that mama could do it by herself. The good people our community did it for her and daddy. The crops were brought in and harvested and mama and daddy weathered a major storm.

Sometimes, I think I don't have that sense of community the way I had it growing up, but when I stop to think about it, I really do. I am very blessed to attend a wonderful church, Elevation. There, I'm a part of two small groups where I feel very much a part of an extended family. We have made so many friends there and our lives have been forever touched and blessed by these friendships! I am also very blessed to have good neighbors that I know I could call on if I needed them. Good people and good neighbors. Then there's my family at PSE. I am very blessed to be a part of such a great place to work. So yes, I do have that sense of community. Sometimes we just have to stop and think about our family away from our family to realize how blessed we really are.

Spending time with your family is so important and realizing just how special the time we have together really is. I so enjoyed the time I had with my sister, Jan, my niece Callie and my mama and daddy.

Home For the Holidays!

Celebrating Christmas with family and friends is so special! It's hard to believe another Christmas has come and gone! Christmas 2008 has been busy, but lots of fun. We continued the Christmas Eve tradition with our best friends the Sherrills! After attending the Elevation Christmas Eve service at Belk Theatre, we enjoyed having dinner together at our house! It is such a blessing to have such good friends that are just like family! Tony loves to cook. He prepared a rib roast and I cooked a ham! We had all the traditional sides; sweet potato casserole, roasted potatoes, salad, mixed turnip and collard greens...YUM!

Christmas should be a time of celebration with family and friends. According to Rick Warren, throw a party in honor and celebration of the birth of Jesus. We've been doing this with the Sherrills for many years now. The girls have grown up so much! It was so much fun to watch them open their gifts...all from Tutti and not planned!

Since we were traveling on Christmas morning to visit our families, Santa came to visit on Christmas Eve.

Christmas morning we traveled home to Johnston County to celebrate Christmas. We had a great time with both our families. As always we ate way too much. There was enough food to feed an army! We enjoyed lunch with my family on Christmas Day and Tony's family on Christmas night. This is my 5 year old nephew Evan. He was so excited to get a UNC football uniform, but he wasn't so sure about the shoulder pads! My sister was trying to convince him that they go under the jersey! He and his dad are big Tarheel fans!!

My mama's house is a wreck with wrapping paper, but boy is it fun with the children opening gifts. They have such a good time.

We still get a kick out of watching our parent's eyes light up when they open their gifts. They are still young at heart! One of the things we gave both sets of parents was a calendar with snapshots from the year. They love it!

Tony's parents were just as excited about their calendar! Afterwards, another feast began...I was stuffed from the first! Tony's dad, Joe is a wonderful cook. He prepared both turkey and ham! Needless to say I enjoyed both with all the delicious fixins! Can you say New Year's Resolution?

There truly is no place like home for the holidays! Our family is richly blessed with good friends and a loving family. I am also blessed to have a Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and through him all things are possible.

Merry Christmas!

Silver Bells

Over the last week I've been so busy that I haven't even had time to take a few minutes to sit down and write. It seems that's how it can sometimes get this time of year, which caused me to stop and reflect a bit over a few things.

I have many books that I enjoy reading at Christmas, but one of my favorite books is "The Polar Express". I especially love to watch the movie and listen to Tom Hanks do the voices.

As I've mentioned in an earlier blog, our pastor, has been doing a series titled "Do You Hear?" He's been focused on how we hear from God and how God speaks to us. Call me silly, but "The Polar Express" really connected with me differently this year than ever before after hearing these messages.

In the book, the little boy only wants silver bells from Santa when he travels to the North Pole. He is chosen by Santa to receive the first gift of Christmas. On his way back home on the Polar Express, he realizes that he has lost the silver bells because of a hole in his pocket. However, when he wakes up on Christmas morning, there is a small package under the tree for him....the silver bells. Mom and dad say "too bad they're broken", but he and his sister can hear them. Interestingly enough, none of his friends can hear the bells either. They don't believe anymore!

This book spoke volumes to me! Are we listening to the voice of God? Or have we lost the true spirit and meaning of Christmas? Are we able to hear the silver bells through all the hustle and the bustle? God speaks to us in ways that are sometimes beyond our understanding. Maybe we need to allow that childlike faith to come back into our hearts. If we are too busy or have lost our faith, we won't hear the still small voice of God, the true spirit of Christmas...the silver bells.

Are You Listening?

Do you ever feel like you're talking to someone and your words are going straight through them? Nothing is registering! I'm sure I've been that person many times. My mind was a million miles away. Thinking of my grocery list, what's for dinner, lesson plans for class. You name it, I wasn't paying attention. Are you listening to God that way? Are you tuned in? I've struggled with hearing God's voice for a long time, but I think I'm beginning to get a better grasp of what I should be listening to and for.

I've been studying Rick Warren's "Purpose of Christmas". It is wonderful look at the reasons and purposes for Christmas. One of the purposes of Christmas is salvation. We need a savior and Jesus came to save us for a purpose.

This tied in so beautifully with what our pastor has been preaching on over the past two weeks in his sermon series "Do You Hear?" According to our pastor, when God speaks, His voice reveals your purpose. I love ah ha moments and this was one for me!

In the "Purpose of Christmas" study, Ephesians 1:11-12 is referenced. In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

According to our pastor, when God speaks to you , it will stretch you. You're not going to feel comfortable and it's not going to all add up. He used Exodus Chapter 3 as his example, when God called on Moses to lead the Israelites out of bondage. Can you imagine getting that kind of call and from a burning bush no less?

In the beginning of Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Life, he writes it's not all about you. Personally, I think when we begin to realize that, we've realized it's all about God and his purpose for our lives.

During this busy season, take the time to be still and hear God's ever present voice in your heart and life. He is your Savior and he has a purpose for you.

She

This weekend has been so much fun. To my surprise, when I got home from work Friday afternoon, my daughter Katie, 16, wanted to go with me to run errands. Sounded good to me, I never turn down time with her.

After running errands, we stopped by Barnes & Noble to grab a quick cup of coffee and a cookie for a treat. Fun! I tried the Gingersnap Latte. I think this is my new favorite.

Once again, Katie and I headed out Saturday afternoon bargain shopping at some of our favorite spots....hoping to finish up!We had the best time together looking at clothes and make-up, talking, and just plain doing girly stuff!
When our children are born, they don't come with manuals and I'm convinced that being a parent is the hardest job in the world. Take advantage of the time they want to spend with you! These are the times they are really paying attention and listening.

I embrace these times with Katie like never before. It's hard to believe that in just a little over a year she'll be graduating and off to college. Raising a teenager can be a challenge. No doubt. I've learned over the last few years that I have to surrender her to God and allow Him to work in her life. She is His daughter. I'm ultimately not in control. He is, but He works through us as parents to model what is right. Choose your battles. Listen to your teen's heart. Hear their heart.

I love Elvis Costello's song "She". It is so poetic and really describes the heart of a woman. My little girl is growing up.

Not Just Somewhere We Fall

One of my favorite songs of all time is one by Clint Black called "Love Is Something That We Do". I love to listen to the words of this song, because it reminds me of what love and marriage is all about. It's on my "playlist of favorites". Tony and I were married December 9, 1984 and yesterday we celebrated our 24th anniversary.

According to the song, love isn't just something we have or just somewhere we fall, but something we do. Those words speak volumes to me about true love. Yes, we fall in love, but to stay in love it takes hard work, commitment and a willingness to show respect and give unconditional love.

One of the sweetest things that Tony does for me every morning is to make a fresh pot of coffee! Simple, but sweet. At 5:00 a.m. he makes the best cup of coffee in town! It doesn't have to be expensive or a big deal, it's the little things in life that you do for the ones you love that mean the most!

Our marriage certainly has had it share of ups and downs over the years and at one point I thought it was over, but God had other plans. I'm thankful for the struggles, because they've help us grow in our faith and as a couple.

God has richly blessed us in so many ways. When I think back over our 24 years together, I am amazed at how the Lord has so beautifully orchestrated every little detail in our lives.

What's the Reason for the Season?

I've always heard it said that "Jesus is the Reason for the Season". I couldn't agree more. However last year I was listening to a really powerful sermon that touched me profoundly. The message said that I was the reason for the season. Wow! Think about it. Jesus was born for us...you and me. I knew that, but never heard it put quite that way.

The book of Luke is written to present Jesus as a Savior for the entire human race. No matter the color of your skin, the size of your bank account or house! Luke 2: 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Those words "to you"...for me, are personal. It was for you and for me that God brought his son to earth to live as one of us and to die for our sins. He paid the ultimate sacrifice for me.

Jesus is called "Immanuel" in Matthew chapter 1:23, which means, "God with us." Knowing that God is always with me is a comfort even when I don't think He's there...He is! During this season when it is so easy to lose sight of what we're really celebrating or forget what's really important and get completely stressed out, remember "Immanuel".

This season, celebrate the real reason for the season. The birth of our Savior, Christ the Lord. Not the hustle and bustle, not the latest greatest gadget or gifts. We have the greatest gift! Just recognize it and receive it. Remember that Jesus loves you, is with you and will never leave you or forsake you. He was born for you. Allow Christ to give you peace in this season.

Luke Chapter 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

With Love, A Gift For My Daddy

More than anything I wish I could be there today with you to celebrate this milestone in your life. 85 years today! You are a man that is rich not in material things, but in the things that matter most in this life. Your faith and love in God, your steadfast love and commitment to Mama for 61 years. Your unselfish love for us girls and our hubbies, Barry and Tony...the sons you never had, and those grandchildren you adore, Katie, Callie and Evan...the loves of your life. Your love of family, church, community and country. Let's not forget those cows and your coveralls! What more could a man ask for?

Some of my fondest memories are riding the tractor with you when I was little and going fishing late on Saturday afternoons! Chopping and loading fire wood every Thanksgiving Day to prepare for winter ! Digging potatoes on summer mornings...that was fun especially when we'd dig up a snake! Driving up to the Raleigh-Durham Airport to watch the planes take off was really amazing to me as a little girl dreaming.

I used to love it when we'd go to Mr. Ed Smith's store and get a little coca cola and put peanuts in the coke...you taught me how to do that and manage to somehow get all the peanuts! My all time favorite I think would have to be when you'd bring home orange candied slices from the hardware store in a white paper bag at Christmas..always a treat! These things I won't ever forget. You made memories with us. Memories that are worth more to me than you'll ever know. They are priceless.

Thank you so very much for raising me the way you did! There were a lot of hard times on the farm, when we didn't always have what everybody else had, but you and mama always made us feel rich. I love you and thank you for being the best daddy this girl could ever have! I am blessed to have been born your daughter.

Happy 85th Birthday Daddy!

Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

Deck The Halls, But Check Your Foundation!

I absolutely love this time of year! Decorating the tree while listening to Christmas music and then watching my favorite movies are something I really enjoy and always look forward to! It's also that time of year when it is so easy to become stressed and frustrated with the many tasks at hand!

While putting the ornaments on the tree yesterday, I took a trip down memory lane. It takes me forever it seems to unwrap the ornaments from their boxes and packaging, but because they're special, I don't want to break them! Many of the ornaments were gifts either given by our parents, family members or friends and hold special meaning. Others are even more special because Katie made them through the years when she was little. Those ornaments are priceless to me!

One ornament in particular stood out this year. It was "Our First Christmas Together 1984" ornament. This year makes the 24th year it has been on our Christmas tree. It was packaged in the original box, wrapped carefully in tissue paper to protect it. When I hung it on the tree, I noticed it had a few cracks, which to me was very much like our marriage and home life at times in the past. Fragile sometimes, but not broken. Together by God's grace and abiding love.

To me this was very symbolic of how God works in our walk with Him, our marriage, and homes. The ornament was safely packaged, carefully wrapped to guard it. The ornament was protected by its foundation if you will. When our lives are built on a solid foundation of following Jesus Christ, nothing can shake it even when there are bumps in the road, suffering, pain and even those frustrations of the holidays!

As the Christmas season is just beginning, don't let the rush rock your foundation with Jesus Christ. He was born for you!

Luke Chapt. 6:47-48 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid a foundation on a rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go! What a great time we had visiting with both my family and Tony's family over Thanksgiving.

We enjoyed Wednesday night with Tony's family and Thursday lunch with my family. Here are a few of the pictures. Katie with Granny Ann and Papa Joe and Tony's brother Danny and his wife Denise.

Thursday was a beautiful day on the farm at Mama and Daddy's! My sister Jan and her husband Barry and their children Callie and Evan joined us.

Here are pictures of the calf I wrote about the other day! He is finally nursing his mama and has strength in his legs. What a cutie. Callie and Evan had named him Lucky and then decided to change his name to Stormy after the mascot for the Hurricanes! I've also included a picture of Callie's horses, the farm house I grew up in, the old barns, Katie's cow and other cool shots of the farm I grew up on!

As a child, there was nothing better than being on the farm and playing in the dirt and running to the front door to see if something planted the day before in the field across the house had started to grow! As a teenager I didn't really appreciate it quite as much. The rows of the soybean field seemed to never end! That was how we got our tan...no going swimming until it was finished! However, as an adult, I know that there were many life lessons taught on that farm. Hard work, perseverence, patience and love of life!

I am so grateful to have had that experience and am thankful that our daughter experienced it if only for a short amount of time.

Being back on the farm gave me a sense of renewal. For that I am thankful. It was peaceful and quiet and gave me time to be with the ones I love!

Psalm 100:4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

More Celebrating!

Today is another day to celebrate! Happy Birthday Papa Joe! Tony's Dad, my father-in-law is celebrating! Happy 70th!

November and December are big months in our family for celebrations of birthdays and anniversaries along with March and April!

When I was just a little girl, Mr. Joe delivered milk to our house. He worked for Coble Dairy. I used to love it when he would pick me up and let me choose an ice cream from the freezer on the inside of the milk truck. Now that was the cat's meow to a barefoot little farm girl!! Little did I know then that I would grow up and marry his son!

Tony's dad used to sing in a gospel quartet called "The Gospel Four" I used to love to hear them sing. Even before Tony and I started dating, I remember hearing them sing at local churches and different singings. They were really good and full of character...or should I say they were characters. Ha! They did add some humor!

Over the years I've known Tony's dad and mom, they have modeled love the way Jesus loves in so many ways. From gracefully dealing with the unexpected accident of a son in 1981 resulting in a serious head injury, to taking mission trips over seas when neither of them really were in the best of health, to hosting a Belarussian child, Nastya, every summer for the last several years, that they have grown to love as their own.

Thank you for all you've meant to us and Happy Birthday with love!

Matthew 25:23 'Well done thy good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

Happy Anniversary Mama and Daddy!

Happy Anniversary Mama and Daddy! 61 years today. Daddy always tells the story that if mama ever decides to leave him to give him five minutes notice. Why? We always ask even though we've heard the story a thousand times. He simply says "I'm going to pack up and go with her."

That's true love. They've weathered many storms, but always put their faith and trust in the Lord and their marriage has stayed strong. None of this bailing when it became a little too tough! They stuck it out through thick and thin, good times and bad, sickness and in health.

I'm so proud of them and the example they have set for us as their children. God bless you both. I love and wish you many happy years to come!

The Least of These

I spoke with my mama tonight to learn that a new calf has been born on the farm! He's so little he can barely stand. His little legs aren't strong enough yet to hold him up and he doesn't want to nurse his mama either! So...mama and daddy have been feeding him with a huge baby bottle a few times a day. Hopefully I 'll have pictures tomorrow. Today my sister Jan went down to help my daddy by lifting the calf to help him stand on four legs...hoping to give him some stability. Needless to say he was a little wobbly. Mama said Jan wrapped her arms around the baby calf to help secure him even more.

All the folks on Old Evans Road are so excited about the birth of the new calf they stop to look when he's being fed. They even want to feed the cows apples. Daddy said "yes" to apples for the cows, "no" for the calf. Only milk for him right now. He has to have the right nourishment for proper growth.

This got me to thinking about our Heavenly Father and how he wraps his arms around us to keep us secure even when we're wobbly and can't hold ourselves up. He gives us just the right nourishment and enough strength when spirtually we're malnourished and we feel we have no hope and can't go on. You might be that nourishment or strength for one in need. You might be the arms of Jesus reaching out to those needing stability or support when their family is falling apart or when they don't have enough food to feed their family or pay their water or electric bill. You might be that smile to a shut in on a cold day when she can't get outside. You might be that voice on the other end of the line asking "How was your day"?

During this Thanksgiving season and in the days and months ahead we need to be the the arms, hands, legs and feet of Jesus Christ reaching out to others and living out His example to help the least of these.

Matthew 25:35-36
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was
thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

Matthew 24:40 'I will tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Country Comes to Town!

Last night Tony suggested that we go to uptown Charlotte today! What a great idea I thought. We never do this and are trying so hard to go on a date at least once a month that's within our budget. It's so easy to just stay in your 5 mile radius and that's what we always do...BORING! I was really excited because I had never been on the light rail. I really looked like a tourist although I live right here in town. Country really did come to town. One might even say Fred and Ethel had arrived!

We hopped on the Light Rail at the 485 Connection and made our first stop at South End. I'd always wanted to just go there and browse through some of those cool little shops! While we were there, we wandered into a really cool little art gallery. There were many beautiful pieces. I'm always amazed by and appreciate the talent of artists. What a God given gift!

We decided while we were there to grab a couple of boxes of "Price's Chicken Coop"....the best in the south besides my mama's. That's a God given gift too! To be able to cook fried chicken that good is a talent! We sat across the street from Price's next to the tracks and had a fun time eating and people watching. That place stayed packed the entire time we were there....line out the door! The hushpuppies are as good as the chicken. We don't get to go as often as we'd like, but it is one of my favorite places to eat. It's so real. Reminds me of home.

Later we hopped back on the light rail and headed to uptown. We enjoyed just walking the streets uptown, visiting the Mint Museum Gift Shop and Reid's Fine Foods. What a great store. The afternoon was so much fun and cheap...less than $23 dollars for the whole day.

Taking the time just to enjoy life and appreciate the small things you have right at your finger tips are so important.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Celebrate 48!

Today is Tony's 48th birthday! My plans were to cook a pot roast with potatoes, carrots and onions, but time ran out by the time I got home. A good friend at work suggested that I cook a pasta dish with Italian sausage, red and green peppers and onions. Great idea and something Tony loves. It turned out great and it was really quick and easy after a busy day at work. We watched "Get Smart" after cake....hilarious!

The Day After

There's so many thoughts swirling through my mind about this election! Where do I even begin? First off, Barack Obama becoming the 44th President of the U.S. is definitely history in the making. John McCain was quite the gentleman during his concession speech last night. We should all be so gracious. Whether we agree or disagree with the choice for president, it is our responsibility as Christians to pray for our new leader that God will lead, guide and direct every decision he makes.

I was reading Beth Moore's blog today. Boy, does she sum it up nicely. I encourage you to take some time to read this.

On a lighter note, at least there's no more negative campaigning! The car commercials will actually be a breath of fresh air!

Voting!

I was so excited when I went to the voting precinct this afternoon and there was no line! For a few days, I was actually feeling a bit guilty for not voting early. It never worked out for me to go with so many other irons in the fire. Now I'm glad it didn't.

We are so blessed to be able to vote! What a privilege to be able to walk in, mark your ballot for the person you want to lead your country, state and other offices. Whether your candidate of choice wins or not, we should count it not only as a right, but a freedom and blessing.

My good friend Betsy and I were talking today about this heated presidential election and how bent out of shape people tend to get over who is going to win. Ultimately God is in control. We should all be praying for the one that is elected. I love the following scriptures. Pray that whatever candidate is elected, that he will pray for God to lead him in his plans for this country.

Proverbs 16:3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

This weekend was fun! Friday night Katie went trick or treating with some of her friends from school, but before she did, she had an oppotuntity to give out treats to some children she babysits and and some of the students I teach.

Tony had to get in on the fun too! A Larry the Cable Guy wannabe, he had a great time passing out candy!

In the middle of all this fun, Maggie, our beagle, managed to squeeze through the door and take a tour of all the neighbors yards! Looking for a "treat" I guess. Needless to say she slept well Friday night.

From the Outside Looking In

It's been a week since I've had an opportunity to write. Words haven't been flowing as easily as I had hoped. Writer's block I guess. So goes life. Just like words, life doesn't always flow easily and often gets blocked by the "everyday"struggles.

Think about how many people you have passed this week that may have had smiles on their faces, but when you look deep into their eyes, you see sadness, insecurity, hopelessness, doubt, fear and the list could go on!

You have to wonder...where is their hope? Where is their joy? Where is their peace? Where is their trust?

For several years, I was that person you might pass. I was sad, lonely, full of doubt and fearful that my marriage was over and I was losing my daughter. From the outside looking in, things looked great. No one really knew or if they did, I never knew they knew.

I share this because as Christians, we need to speak life into others, give them a smile or a pat on the back. You never know how your kindness may be exactly what that hopeless person needs at that moment. I love the song "Give Me Your Eyes" by Brandon Heath. This song speaks volumes to me about how we often pass people that may be in pain and never really give them a second glance. Give them your eyes so they might see Jesus in you.

Embrace those that are hurting. They need you. Jesus is our hope, peace, joy and where we can place our trust. He is there for us in those times of need.

A very dear friend shared this Psalm with me recently. Although I had read it before, it was if I was reading it for the first time.

Psalm 13: 5-6 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation . I will sing to the Lord, for He has been good to me.

Date Nights!

With the economy being the way it has for quite some time, we've cut back in many ways. Date nights....back burner! Not a good idea. That's one area that should not be trimmed back. Focusing on making your marriage a priority is so important. Altough I have to say, any night Tony cooks for me, and he's a great cook, it's a date!

Friday night, we took advantage of our date night gift card from church and went to Bone Fish Grill for a late dinner at 9:00! It was so nice and relaxing. Tony and I both have had busy weeks, especially Tony. He's been putting in 12-13 hour days over the last few weeks, but he waited for me to get home from a memorial service and then we went out. What a trooper.

One date night is great, but two in a row is unheard of for us! I felt like a teenager last night getting ready to go on a dinner cruise aboard The Catawba Queen. It took about an hour to get there, but we had a great time. My good friend Jena, and her huband Pastor David Shipman, invited us to join them with some of their friends for a night of fellowship. We had an amazing time. We enjoyed cruising along Lake Norman...an amazing view at sunset!

This morning's message at church preached from "Song of Songs", made me realize how important these date nights really are. They are vital in keeping the marriage fresh and strong. Pastor Furtick also pointed out a very important verse from Ephesians 5:33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

I love this verse. This verse is the emphasis of the book "Love and Respect". I highly recommend this book to anyone whether your marriage is strong or needs strengthening.

Embrace the Day!

It's amazing how you think you just don't have enough hours in the day to get
everything accomplished, but somehow the things that are really important to us get finished! When I think about my schedule too much I tend to get a little overwhelmed! I'm getting better at taking one day at a time and embracing each day for its ups and downs, its highs and lows, its good and its bad. No matter what the situation, there is good in each day. Look for the nuggets. Every day is a gift from God...from above, not to be taken for granted, to be embraced!

Going Home

Friday afternoon Katie and I set off for Clayton, NC. It's always nice to head home to see Mama and Daddy, my sister, her husband and children and my in-laws Joe and Ann. Honestly, I was looking forward to mama's made from scratch banana pudding and some rest....lucky me, I got both. Being on the farm was very relaxing and quiet compared to Charlotte's hustle and bustle.

Saturday, my sister Jan and me did a little shopping while my parents went to my mother's 60th class reunion! WOW and I thought 27 years was a lot. I was so proud of my mama. She was leading the blessing that day. She is such a woman of God. At 78, she continues to let her light shine to others.

Sunday we went to church at First Baptist Church in Clayton, NC. Tony and I used to be very active at this church before moving to Charlotte and Katie was dedicated as a baby there. In fact Sunday was Baby/Parent Dedication Day. One of my former students and her husband were dedicating their lives to raising their baby daughter in a Christian home. This young mother looked absolutley radiant!! I taught her in second grade over 15 years ago! Time really flies. It was nice to see many of our old friends and loved ones.

Just like always, mama cooked enough to feed an army after church! She is such a wonderful southern cook. We had our fill of BBQ chicken, country style steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, boiled potatoes...as if one kind wasn't enough, field peas and butter beans! Oh! I forgot to mention the preferred drink of the south...sweet tea! Needless to say, when it was time to go home, I could hardly keep my eyes open! Thankfully Katie was driving! As always, it was hard to leave. My 84 year old daddy always has teary eyes and says to drive safely, lock your doors and to call when you get home. I feel like I'm 16 again...loving every minute of it! As hard as it is to say goodbye, it is always nice to go back home!

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
7. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Beautiful Morning

This morning was one of those mornings that I wish I could capture, put in a bottle and keep forever! Clipboards in hand, I took my 2nd graders down the Branch Creek Nature Preserve for a nature walk at 7:45! We were looking for signs of fall using all of our senses. The children were in awe as we watched, listened to, smelled and felt the signs of fall. Pencils were quickly jotting things down like golden and brick red leaves, scurrying squirrels, and dangling spider webs. Watching their little 7 year old faces light up when hearing a babbling brook in the distance or the rustling of the trees from the breeze reminded me why I enjoying teaching.

It made me stop and think how precious life really is and how important it is to spend time the ones we love just stopping to smell the roses and watch the sun peek through the trees or notice the beauty of God's creations all around us.

Renew: From the Women's Devtional Bible
Help me, Lord, to see your beauty all around me.
May my gratitude spill over from a cup full of
thanks to you.

Where do I even begin? It was such a wonderful weekend...nothing but rest, relaxtion and spending time with the ones you love. Sunday afer going to early church, Tony went to the Panthers game with his good buddy Skip. They had a great time and took the light rail to the game. What a great game! He was so excited because he never gets to do this...free tickets! Saturday night I had fixed a huge pot of chili and we had lots of left overs, so I invited Candy, my life long friend, that just happens to be Skip's wife over to lunch for chili. We had a great time catching up. Although we teach at the same school and go the the same church, we don't get to talk as often as we'd like. Imagine that. :(

It was a beautiful day to run errands and plant flowers...still have a ways to go with planting! Fall is such a beautiful time of year. It's like God's canvas. Our street is a short, yet a beautiful part of that canvas. The way the trees are nestled along the way, it reminds me somewhat of Blowing Rock. It is absolutely beautiful when the leaves begin to change colors.

Sunday evening was just the icing on the cake to an absolutely perfect weekend. We went to a praise and worship service on Sunday night at Elevation Church. Wow! I couldn't stop singing "Glory in the Highest" Being able to praise our Lord so freely for all that He has meant in my life is so humbling.

Psalm 29:2 Give unto the Lord the glory due His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Wow! What a day...very busy, yet so productive. Today was a teacher workday for Charlotte Meck. Our school had a previously planned seminar training. My training was in the afternoon which allowed me time in my classroom during the morning to organize and prepare centers, rearrange furniture and actually clean off my desk and file papers that I haven't had a chance to touch since the beginning of the year!

Having a little extra time this morning for coffee and reading was so nice before leaving for work. I didn't feel rushed to be out the door by 6:35. Being able to actually spend more time with my devotion was nice. It put me in the frame of mind I needed to face the day. Having this time is a challenge for me, but I find that when I don't spend time in God's word, my day reflects it.

With the economic jolt and so much uncertainty hanging over our heads, we can rest assured in the fact that God loves us and we can put our faith and trust in Him when all else fails.

Psalms 25:4-5
Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This!

There are days when you just feel like you'd like to start over...this was one of those days for me. I could tell that when I woke up this morning, I was unusally tired and short with the people I care about most. Not a great way to start the week. Burning the candle at both ends benefits no one.

I think I woke up a little stressed knowing that along with my buddy Candy, I had to sing the school song today on the "We Rock" show...our little news show at PSE. It went well and everyone was complimentary, but I was nervous.

Sometimes you feel as though the harder you try, whether it be at work, home or in your Christian walk, the more challenging it can be. I certainly won't be getting a "Mother of the Year" award today for my lovely attitude and maternal skills. Let just say I blew it nicely..to say the least.

Mama said there would be days like this, but Mama also said never go to bed angry or upset with those you love. This scripture reminds me of what I should be doing.

Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Reflection

This week has been a week of challenges for many. Even when times are uncertain and unsure, God is in control. I left home Tuesday morning before work to get gas...no gas. No problem I thought. Thinking I'd be able to get some that afternoon, I went to three different stations, but no gas.

Fortunately we had five gallons in the gas can that was fresh and o.k. to use. I was now up to 1/4 tank. By Friday, I was down to less than an 1/8 of a tank, still no gas to be found. According to the media, shipments were coming in. A very kind lady in the grocery store shared with us about a station where she and her husband had gotten gas. We were on our way.

While headed to that station, we came across another station that had gas, but had a fairly long line, but we decided to stop. Tony and I sat in line for about 40 minutes Saturday while police officers monitored the station. We felt blessed.

When you feel you have absolutely no control over a situation, whether it be gas, your job, your children, your marriage or finances, turn it over to God. He provides.

Philippians 4:6 -7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
