Go and see Juno.
Listening to the story of teenage pregnancy from Juno's perspective gave a sense of authenticity. Somehow this story was super touching and felt real at the same time. The complexity of relationships and family life are exposed, the vulnerable teenage questions are asked, the goodness of flawed people shines through the confusion of human life.
The politics of this hot-button issue was set as merely background noise and bascially neutralized while attention centered on the difficult decisions Juno faced with her body, relationships, and future. Every relationship she had was renegotiated beautifully, but genuinely. Juno never quit being Juno, but also kept finding ways to be a better version of herself.
Juno is a story about chances and second chances for a lot of people - not just Juno. It is story about redemption and providence. It is a story about hidden things that cannot remain hidden and why that is a really good thing. It is a story that doesn't just get you all cleaned up at the end and ready to go, but rather helps you to feel like there is some good in the honest dirt of life.
You will fall in love with Juno - you just won't be able to help it.

Dan In Real Life: A Movie Review
Do not believe the bad reviews that this movie is getting from some reviewers. They are out of touch - sitting at their laptops wondering why they have a wedgy and are blaming it on Dan."Dan" gives us some good surprises, some good tension, and some good laughs - OK, some great laughs. Steve Carell's humor is subtle, sometimes nonverbal, and always timed perfectly. I laughed out loud at least half a dozen times and chuckled frequently.
The plot is surprisingly not totally predictable. But best of all, this movie shows a family that is healthy (not perfect) and good. You might think you could be comfortable in this family.
The plot does a good job of connecting themes and it moves alongs fast enough.
See it. You won't regret it.

High School Musical 2: A Movie Review
Well, they did it again. HSM2 started with a bang and didn't quit.OK, there was the totally predictable and the necessary unrealism, but my kids were G-L-U-E-D to it, commenting over and over again that "this is way better than the first one." They were right.
It was fun, set up conflict, resolved it and played on classic high school relationship pettines in order to culminate into a classic for years to come.
Taking the show off the high school grounds was genius. HSM1 took that backdrop about as far as they could. The country club backdrop was fun and afforded them more latitude for developing (OK, developing is probably an overstatement) the characters and moving the cliche into a fresh setting.
The best move was pitting Ryan and Sharpay against each other. There is good cause and effect in relationships and they did a decent job of exposing the consequences of selfishness, showing the seduction of fame, and the value of friendship.
There were lots of bathing suits, but I have to say that they were modest. There was no pushing of the envelope with the dress in ths show and that made a huge differece. In fact, there was no pushing of any envelopes. The classic comparison to HSM is Grease. But I think that there is no comparison. Grease pushed the envelope in order to be cool. HSM looked at the envelope and shrugged. Why? Because classic high school themes are not at the extremes of the adolescent experience, they are at the mean.
HSM2 is a hit and will be for years to come.

Amazing Grace: A Movie Review
Amazing Grace tells a story which exposes both the very worst and the very best of humanity.John Newton, the man who penned the words to the song Amazing Grace, was a ship's captian for slave ships who was later haunted by the lives he destroyed, ends up being a very important supporting character in this movie.
The hero is of the story is William Wilberforce, a gifted young legislator in Britian. He and his group wrestle through the political toils of institutional and political slavery. The devaluation of the lives of the African slaves is so stark and so hard to watch because of the ease with which the devaluation comes off the lips of the legislators.
What I think this movie does best is show the difference between a politically self-interested kind of Christianity that is so intertwined with state that you can't tell the difference between the two and a genuine Christianity that actually cares for the value of human life, even if it means tolerating accusations of sedition and treason.
And if watchers do not connect what happens in the process and tone of this movie and what is happeing in America today with immigration and racial inequities, I think they miss the point. It is hard to hear talk today of illeagl immigrants costing "us" money and say it is much different than the abolishment of slavery costing too much money back in Enlgand or here in the United States.
The movie moves along well enough to keep the watcher's interest. There is drama, romance, and enough tension to keep a bit of a knot in your stomach.
What is most difficult about this movie is perhaps what makes it so good. The amount of effort it took to undo something that should have never existed in the first place is hard to sit through.
As a Christian, I am glad to see a movie making an honest effort at exposing what Christians are capable of when they actually follow what Jesus did - and what happens when they do not.
My biggest critique of the movies is that there were not enough Africans in the movie. I understand that the movie was not centered on the Africans part of the equation per se, but i think tat they could have done a better job on this part.
