EdD Formative Assignment 3: Map of Literature Review [unproofed, 1st Draft]

CHAPTER 1: Theory Here I examine literature underpinning the theory regarding the circumstances in which English L2 learners (or “new Scots”) find themselves having to be assessed in their English language ability in order to secure the status of citizen of the UK and Scotland, or person with indefinite leave to remain. This is necessary to give a framework to a complicated situation which crosses several disciplines, (Language Assessment, Educational Policy, Immigration Law and Policy, and Second Language Acquisition Theory). The theory helps to move the research from a narrative of “What happens to new Scots with regard to their emergent bilingualism?” to a more critical field of discourse, “Why does that happen?” and “What does it mean ?”   “Non-Native Speakers” v “emergent bilinguals”. This section looks at theory regarding L2 learners, that is people who are learning a language, (with specific reference to English learners in Scotland) which is not the same as L1 the...

EdD 2nd Formative Submission - Updated

Garry Nixon University of Strathclyde EdD 2nd Formative Submission  Due: 21st November 2015 Submitted: 1st December 2015 Search Log and Annotated Bibliography Section 1 Mind Map  Section 2 Searches Mostly in Google Scholar. However, where search results turned up a book, I would go to the university’s library site to check its availability, (see Reflections). I used Google for non-academic searches, and the library’s databases for law-based searches.  Below are 6 searches which yielded initial titles relating to policy.  There were too many results in the earliest searches, and I gradually refined the terms to get 66 results on the 6th attempt. On the earlier searches, with many results, I would skim through the first few pages of results, to get a feel for them.  *"English Language" "Asylum Seekers" Refugees Scotland* [Google Scholar, All, 2,260 results] *ESL "Asylum Seekers" Refugees Scotland*  [Google Schola...

EdD Formative Submission 2: Search Log and Annotated Bibliography

Section 1 Mind Map Section 2 Searches I have had to change the area of my research in the last few days for reasons beyond my control, and perform the searches and draft this submission fairly quickly as a result. Therefore, I limited my searches for now to Google Scholar. However, where search results turned up a book, I would go to the university’s library site to check its availability, (see Reflections). Below are 6 searches which yielded initial titles relating to policy.  There were too many results in the earliest searches, and I gradually refined the terms to get 66 results on the 6th attempt. SEARCH 6: * ESOL "Asylum Seekers" Refugees Scotland* [Google Scholar, Since 2014, 66 results] NB Hynes 2011 is available from library as downloadable book for 1 day, so I'll look at that tomorrow when I've got all day, (paste full citation into "Library Collections" to access).  For Submission 2, I need (inter alia) to reference and write short abstract for FIVE titles as relevant to my research. Best for purposes of submission that these are variety of different titles. Thinking of using (and therefore reading later today & tomorrow): Hynes 2011. (Book) Mulvey 2015. (Journal Article) Pietka-Nykaza 2015. (Journal Article) SQA 2015. (Website) Strang 2015. (Report) REFERENCES Doyle, L., & O’Toole, G. (2013). EdD: Bringing It All Back Home

Change of direction in the research. The organisation in China that was paying me for assessment of young ELLs (English Language Learners) following a curriculum based on the Common Core are paying me no longer. Frankly, it's a relief to not have to base my work and studies on Learners thousands of miles away to the East, whose studies are, in turn, based on a set of Standards drawn up in a country thousands of miles away to the West. And I've travelled enough in the last twenty years that the prospects of school visits in China, and conferences in the States, have limited appeal. I've a formative submission for the EdD due this Saturday, which wants a mind map of my Lit Rev, summary of searches, bibliography, and a short reflection on what I've learnt from the foregoing. Luckily, I haven't started that on my Common Core v English as a Lingua Franca  proposal from August, so, if I get cracking, like-say, this morning, I can do the submission for a new proposal b...
