after 3 long nights, whilst not trying too hard, i have finally completed the 'very easy' stage of mofunzone's defender. my winning team at the last wave:
now that i've decided to follow shawn's advice to search out smu bloggers for purposes of happiness, laughter, peace, joy and networking opportunities, i have, at long last, stumbled upon a single intelligent blog owned by a smu blogger:
the russian version of the most memorable pooh episode (where pooh got stuck in rabbit's hole).
i came upon this after deciding i needed a break from the reality of singapore's fate from reading depressing emails from 4m's yahoogroups, to discover that pooh has been transformed into a deep brown raccoon with rayman-esque feet detached from his body.
my intent was to hold comments regarding the issue of the hike in ministerial pay, since there is no way to hold another ridiculous policy endorsed by the government in its tracks anyway. that is, until i read the article on the youngpap blog regarding green-eyed monsters.
normally, you wouldn't expect a 32 year old lawyer to be openly committing ad hominem and making such faulty arguments that i found it nothing less than entertaining. it makes the professionalism of the legal sector seem very much a facade. he places the legal profession on such high ground that it belies the status of other professions such as medicine.
a press release quoted him having "only less than five hours of sleep on some nights because he had to juggle his career as well as his 'CCA in politics'." i am impressed, though, that he gets sleep at all. medical interns work 48 hour shifts, private bankers are on call 24/7 and certain students from smu are rumoured to have 3 hours of sleep a day; it makes his dedication laughable.
and returning to the case regarding the overpriced paychecks, there is an obvious need to revise our vote for a true democratic state.
despite the argument being unsound, i like that someone brought up comments in the lazarus article regarding dr vivian balakrishnan mentioning that a financial aid of $290 per month was sufficient for the needy, in view of the hike in ministerial pay. i'm emotionally biased, after all. the exact quote from Today (Mar 31, 2007) below:
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, countered that there was "enough, by and large" for most on the PA scheme to get by. He stressed that everyone — from grassroots and voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) to "compassionate" individuals and the Government — has a role to play in helping the needy and disadvantaged.
doesn't this make us warm and fuzzy inside, knowing that our ministers care so much more about how we get by than how much they're earning? wowee.
When you are unkind to us, we smile less. We can't help it. We are human.
[extended rant] this has nothing about being unprofessional. we are not professionals to begin with. we work part-time on a schedule, filling up our slots which would otherwise be reserved for recreation, earning a measly $5.4 per hour.
we slog our days away, clocking more hours working than we are paid, doing shifts during chinese new year to relieve a certain degree of manpower shortage during the holiday season (and of course to get out of visiting, but that's besides the point).
we are informed to be punctual, smile every second we don the uniform, to find a spot to hide from public view (for a drink) when we feel thirsty, to fend away taxi drivers who curse and swear (or simply ignore us) when we approach, not being allowed a second of rest whilst on service host duty. all this while the full-timers are reporting late for work, enjoying unofficial breaks in air-conditioned offices while we sweat under the humid sky, smoking in the control room, and reprimanding us for offences they are clearly committing themselves.
it's obvious there is clearly a difference between management and staff, and in this case, between permanent staff and the temporary. but when it unfortunately leads to a disparity in treatment, how do you expect service from the heart?
when it comes to the military, ruling with an iron hand is an effective device due to the law of insubordination; nobody is happy, but work gets done. in hospitality, authoritarian systems lead to general displeasure; nobody is happy, and nothing gets done well.
and i am obviously not happy.
don't be confused, i do love the job scope. but not enough money and not enough smiles contribute to the high turnover rate. at least 5 people are quitting from sky tower this month, and i'm contributing to the worthy cause.
it is clearly time to start drafting a letter to the management regarding the crumbs to be cleared. i sure as hell hope to get fired doing this.
which is a good move, considering that wordpress is (imho) the most powerful blogging tool to date. i was torn between staying at blogspot and shifting to wordpress on new year's eve last year before finally settling for blogspot only because i had to pay to customise css scripts in wordpress. also, not forgetting that if i had a server, i would be blogging off wordpress with full customisation, which leads us back to the innate problem: no moolah.
as much as i'm approving of the gargantuan task of exporting out of movabletype over to wordpress, rickey has suddenly flooded the site with indiscriminate internet ads which include gay-clubbing music cds featuring topless men from amazon.com.
thankfully, firefox blocks this out while i happily surf, until it also accidentally blocks out embedded music files.
sigh. i don't know why i'm pimping websites for free.
