My Recent Whirlwind Trip to Penang

As I was chatting with the organisers of my recent whirlwind trip to Penang, I found out from them where they have booked the hotel that we stayed in. Apparently HotelsCombined gave them a good deal in terms of pricing and was able to entertained the requests of the organisers.

It's not an easy feat to handle the booking of rooms of 12 families with the various requests on combination of rooms and beds arrangement but they managed to do it.

I've check out HotelsCombined myself and the prices looked pretty attractive as we might be going to Penang again and I'm impressed that it also covers hotels from a lot of cities round the world!!! The best part is the search facility where it searches the best travel sites and displays the best prices at once and from there you can find the cheapest price. Wonderful isn't it instead of trawling a few sites to do the same thing?

Hopefully I would be able to meet up with the Penang floggers this time round!

Whirlwind Durian Makan Trip to Penang

It's durian season and a few weeks back, we followed a car club convoy to Penang for a durian buffet on a Sat and came back the next day. Well, it's not really so much for the durians but it was fun to join the fabulous people in the club in a well managed convoy complete with all the GPS coordinates for all the intended stops.

There was a stomach pit stop in Pun Chun at Bidor mid morning which I still find the food really over-rated. I shouldn't have eaten here, really spoilt my appetite for my Penang lunch... grrrr! BTW, if you intended to stop over here and park near the market, please do go find a place to buy the scratch and park tickets cos almost the whole jing gang got a lovely piece of surprise from the Majlis Daerah Tapah on their wind windscreen!

We stopped by at Batu Lanchang market to have lunch but I was still full from the breakie so only Capt'n Hook and boiboi have their lunch. Penang is soooo hot and hazy that weekend, it's no fun when I was under the weather. We stopped by Ghee Hiang and followed by Him Heang for those who wanted to grab the local confectioneries.

mosaic pg01

Checked into the hotel and refreshed ourselves before our trip to Bukit Genting Hill Leisure Park & Restaurant for a sunset dinner. This is one long drive, almost an hour from Tanjung Bungah snaking up the hill. We were like country pumpkins (sua koos) ooos and ahhhings over the amount of durians and rambutans from the foothill till hilltop which is owned by the same management. Some of the boys slowed their car to steal pluck the rambutans.

The road up is rather narrow and kinda steep at some places but once we reached the top, it's totally an entire world altogether. There were a lot of cars parked around the restaurant area already and the whole place is abuzz with activities. Lots of structures and platforms were built around the restaurant for you to enjoy the view out towards Straits of Malacca. There's only one thing though, a lot of animals and trunk shaped statues and fountains were made out of cement and fiberglass which kinda make it rather gawky but what the heck, the children loves them to the bits posing around them. Well, not only children actually, adults too were busy having their photos taken.

mosaic bkt genting

Everyone were captivated by the view and sunset but it was very hazy that day hence the pics didn't turn out great, actually more like this noob doesn't know how to set the camera properly :p Anyway, we ordered the set dinner that was worth RM248 (I think) for 10 that came with rice and drinks of air mata kuching. We waited very very long for our food to arrive, almost an hour and everyone were very restless as the place we sat (under the dome roof) is very very hot. It's better to sit out in the open air if it's not raining. The dome roof contained the heat and there isn't any fan to ease the flow, plus with this kinda roof, we were practically listening to conversation from the next table hehe.

We were famished by the time the food arrived! I lost count of the food serve but we have seafood tom yum (super hot), claypot glass noodle prawns (this is good), mixed vegetables, cucumber salad, green curry (good), thai style fish, fried rice, hot plate prawns and squid (very very good) etc. There were only few good items, the rest were mediocre only and majority of them were very hot. Our main grouses were the food came too slow!

We went back straight to the hotel, knocked out almost immediately after our shower but some of the guys went off for more food for supper!

The next morning we headed to Balik Pulau which is almost another hour drive up and down the hills. We reached Bao Sheng Durian Farm. The whole gang went into a frenzy savouring the durians that Mr Chang (owner) opens. The buffet was not RM25 as stated in the website but I think it was around RM45 which you can have the red prawns, holo (gourd), eu bak (pork lard) etc but as usual we suspect there's a tactic cos they kept opening the I dunno what variety, make you fill up first before opening their best. Since I was coughing and having a bad throat, I did not partake in this buffet. Sighhhh the sight and smell...

mosaic baosheng01

However, I was urged to try the eu bak as one of them said it left a numbing sensation in his mouth, so I tried a couple and beneath the pale colour of the fat layer of a good siew yuk lies a very creamy, slight bitterish flesh. Oh yummsss and it did left a slight numbing sensation. Later on we found out that only very very fresh durians that dropped less than an hour will cause this sensation. Mr Chang said this is the kinda taste they would look for when eating durians.

mosaic baosheng02

We lingered quite many hours here and even went on a insightful tour of the farm. I learnt a lot about durians that day. We went back to the hotel to refreshed ourselves before getting home. It was a tiresome trip but we all have loads of fun. Interestingly we didn't really get to enjoy the real Penang food, perhaps next time. Looking forward to more trips to come ;-)

Penang Makan Discoveries in June 2008 Part 2

We brunched at Kek Seng Kopitiam which is located along Penang Road, just across from Komtar. I remember having ice-cream here when I was really young like perhaps 7 years old? Geee... been so long since I last stepped into this kopitiam. I still remember the booth seats haha... and they're still there.

I got myself fried mee jawa (RM2.50), yeah FRIED. First time I came across a fried one. It came dry, like normal fried mee but this one tasted a bit tangy. Not bad at all and luckily the portion is not too much cos my hubby went overboard and ordered so much stuff.

Kek Seng's Fried Mee Jawa

Hubby got a plate of char koay teow which is nothing to shout about since there were better ones.

Kek Seng's CKT

We ordered 3 pieces of popiah basah and 4 pie tees (RM5.80) from a stall, opted to have some broth over the popiah. Sighhh after the Padang Brown's version, this really pales in comparison but its really not that bad. We loved the pie tee though with my boiboi finishing two. Topping the turnips fillings were strips of omelette. The chilli sauce went very well with the whole combi.

Kek Seng's Popiah Basah

Kek Seng's Pie Tee

We also have a plate of loh bak (RM6.80) which consisted of 2 items ie. ngoh hiang and something like cucur udang.

Kek Seng's Loh Bak

My boiboi got a bowl of koay teow tng (RM2.50) which he can't finish. Not that it wasn't good, just that there were too many other distractions like pie tee and popiah on the table haha. Moreover, he was eyeing the ice-cream and jelly at our next table. Most prolly saving space for that later, smart boy there.

Kek Seng's Koay Teow Tng

Thank goodness the portion were quite small, else there would have been wastage. Anyhow, we packed up those stuff that we can't finish. We need to leave room for these yummy homemade durian ice-cream!!!! They're so fragrant and smooth. They were served on an old school plate and came in the tiniest scoops ever! Darn... lucky thing we were quite stuffed, otherwise, not sure how many scoops we could down in one go.

Kek Seng's Durian Ice Cream

Since my boiboi doesn't take durian, it was rather funny to see him telling the ahpek in his angmoh slang Cantonese (yeah yeah they understood Cantonese here haha) that he doesn't want durian ice-cream in his ice-kacang with jelly. Kekeke the ahpek ask him what flavour and he replied strawberry. There were a few options of ice-kacang here, the one here is red bean and corn that came with one piece of jelly and 2 scoops of ice-cream. Other than the strawberry, the other given is a peanut which if I'm not mistaken is another of their famous homemade ice-cream. The ice-cream plus ice-kacang costed RM5.20.

Kek Seng's Ice Cream with Jelly

Hubby was craving for durians after all these and ask the ahpek where to get durians hahaha... Luckily they told him not to go Balik Pulau as they may be too expensive and gave him directions to get them else where. However, it's too bad we were too early for durians. There weren't any and told us to come back the next week for them! Sighhh... I missed all those thick, bitter sweetish ones from Balik Pulau.

On our way back to KL, we got caught in a massive jam for more than 2 freaking hours, well just to pass thru Jelapang toll! The next time we're going to skip PLUS! @$%&

Penang Makan Discoveries in June 2008 Part 1

We took a short trip up to Penang during the June school holidays. We arrived way passed lunch hour since there was this crawl at the start of the Penang Bridge right till the end of it! Since it was kinda late, hubby took a chance and drove to Pulau Tikus. Now, for the 3rd time in 5 years, he had wanted me to try the siamese laksa at Swee Kong but each time either we were too early or they were closed for reasons known to themselves. We got lucky after getting a parking space with 30 minutes left in the meter to boost. Second time lucky when we walked into Swee Kong and found that the Siamese laksa stall is opened! Hubby quickly secured two bowls and I got something else for boiboi.

Here was the bowl of the elusive Siamese laksa!!! 5 freaking years before I can get a taste... bah. Maybe the long wait had cooked up a high expectation of this laksa, I think it was just all right. Nevertheless it was still good enough for us to lap up every single drop of soup from the bowl. It's quite similar to the assam laksa variety, just that this has santan in it but not a lot. My aunt used to make a killer Siamese laksa which explained why huh?

Swee Kong's Siamese Laksa

Needless to mentioned, we rushed to the back of this shop to get our bubur cha cha fix. Goodness, it still tasted sooo good... lots of sweet potatoes and yam.

That evening, we went out fairly early in search for dinner since my boiboi didn't ate much of his lunch. We checked with the concierge on how to get to New World Park after hearing so much of this place from the Penang bloggers. The Pak Cik took out a map and showed us. Whilst he was pointing, I saw the words Padang Brown and asked him about it. He was surprised that I've heard about it. I didn't tell him I got to know it via Lilian's blog haha... He said that place has got lots of hawker stalls where the locals would go. However, he said most of the Chinese stalls are open during the afternoons and the Malays would be open in the evenings.

With me being the navigator, we went thru the roads but somehow we missed New World Park. The next thing I knew, I saw the sign Padang Brown hahaha... Malaysia is really hopeless with the kinda signage they put up! Hubby swerved in and park, well, just to try our luck. Noticed over at the Chinese stalls side, there were only very few stalls remained opened. The rest were either closed or in the midst of cleaning up. You know, I was extremely happy to note the man selling popiah was sitting there lepaking. Hubby asked if he still has got any left and he nodded. Woooo, his face just like the one Lilian had posted haha.

Padang Brown's Popiah Basah

Hubby ordered 4 popiahs (RM5.20) and guess what??? My boiboi whacked 2 on his own and I just knew why... cause this popiah IS the best that I've ever tasted!!! It has lots of crabmeats on top of the usual turnips fillings. Also, a first for us to have a clear broth ladle over the popiahs. The broth tasted of seafood, most likely from the crabs. Superb!

Padang Brown's Popiah Basah with big chunk of crabmeat

Hubby ordered the Pasembur (RM2.50) next to this popiah stall and some satay (RM4.00 for 10 sticks chicken satay) from a Malay stall. Sad to say, these two paled in comparison.

Padang Brown's Pasembur

Padang Brown's Satay Padang Brown's Satay Sauce

Not satisfied, we shoot off in search of New World Park. After taking some u-turns and we were back to the start of our hotel hehehe... this time, with the map in my mind, I look around and suddenly I saw this teeny weeny signage with arrow pointing to New World Park, apaler! Sighh we managed to locate the place finally. The moment we went inside the hawker stalls, hubby just have to choose to sit right in front of the drinks and dessert stall in the middle of the huge place. He was so tempted with the varieties of ice-kacangs and ice-creams. As we were quite full from our quick stop at Padang Brown, hubby just ordered a small plate of orh jien (oyster omelette). I tell you, for the price of RM5, you could never ever get such a huge plate of orh jien with fat juicy oyster in KL. Best of all, it tasted fantabulous. Next time, we will just zoom in here to grab our food hahaha cos there were quite a number of well patronised stalls.

New World Park's Oyster Omelette

New World Park's Ice Kacang Special

I have seen and heard of Tee Nya kuih but it was my first time seeing it at this drink stall. So I packed one container back (RM2.00). Inside has a bag of gula melaka syrup to go with them. I tried them later that night. They're kuih like texture but not mushy though, however when I put them in my mouth, it's kinda like jelly. I just can't describe it. My hubby said out loud if only I can make this kuih since he never like the kuih I've made.

New World Park's Tee Nya Kuih New World Park's Tee Nya Kuih with gula melaka

I've tried searching for this Tee Nya recipe in the net but there were none. Any Penangites have this recipe to share??

Tai Tong Dim Sum, Lebuh Cintra, Penang

**Non-Halal Post**

TT - Tai Tong Dim Sum

My only other food related post from Penang is this one... sounds lame or not? LOL... but seriously, someone from Penang did recommended this dim sum place in Lebuh Cintra. We didn't "looked" for it actually, we just found a parking spot near the Lebuh Campbell Pedestrian Mall area and walked around to look for a place for brunch before leaving Penang. In the midst of the many Chinese medicine halls and clothings wholesalers, Tai Tong Restoran stood out in the corner. Funnily that on the signboards, it's known as De Tai Tong Café but it's Tai Tong Restoran on it's name card. Must have been a change of name.

This dim sum restaurant is very old school... you can find ladies pushing carts up and down the aisle stopping at each table offering hot steamed dim sum from one cart; deep fried and baked goodies on another; and another cart offers dumplings (sui kow in Cantonese) and porridge or rice congee. These ladies were extremely friendly and patience... explaining and showing what they have in their carts at each table.

The selection Tai Tong have here is superb! There are many modern varieties on top of the usual har gau or siu mai. I really feel like ordering one of each haha... what to do, I'm a glutton, can or not? The uses metal steamer instead of bamboo ones which my mom commented that it's more hygienic. Oh yeahh... this shop is pretty clean, non-slippery floor and toilet is ok too.

Here are the usual siu mai, so generous... 4 medium sized pieces in one steamer. My boiboi ate loads of these. The shrimp in the har gau is crunchy and flavourful, best part is the skin which is thin and soft even after it got cold. Next steamer have 2 huge pieces of oyster dumpling.

TT - siu mai TT - har gau TT - oyster mai

Guys, check out the following dim sums... you tell me, creative or not??? The first one is Fish Maw Dumpling, basically some bouncy fish paste with shrimps topped with fish maw. Next we have a huge ball of fish paste placed on scallop shell and topped with fresh scallop. Nice but I can be biased since I like scallops... just a small piece of scallops though but nevertheless for the price that we've paid, I'm not complaining. Then we have this egg roll which have layers of egg omelette, seaweed, fish paste... yum yum!

TT - yue piew mai TT - scallop fishball TT - egg roll

We tried the char siu bao too (RM1 for one). The bao skin is fluffy filled with not so fat laden char siu pieces. Dad gave thumbs up. However, the egg tarts weren't that great even though the pastry is flaky. The custard is kinda sticky, even my boiboi didn't finish his half piece.

TT - char siu bao TT - egg tarts

Hmmm I can't seems to locate the pics of the chu cheung fun and loh mai kai... lost in cyber space of my phone! Both are ok lah... nothing special. We have loads of repeats of siu mai and har gau. Tar paued (packed) more too... and all in with a pot of Chinese tea, it costed us less than RM50!!! It's SOOO cheap... we realised that only after checking on the order card... wow... still have RM2.20 per steamer item!!!!

TT - cheap01 TT - cheap02

We headed back after our meal but it would be interesting if I have more time to explore the surroundings. Looks like this area have plenty of old school shops. Next time...

Joo Hooi Café & TeoChew Chendul, Penang Road

It's no fun going on a road trip with a 5 year old! We have extra "shee shee" (pee) stops; one stop for sandwich and ice-cream from Dunkin Donut and Baskin Robbins, no less ok *roll eyes*; and lunch stop in Ipoh as we were held back in time due to all the stops! Constant badgering of "Are we in Penang yet?", "Have we reach Penang already?", "Why so long???", "I want to go Penang!!!"... arrghhhhh!!!! It drove us NUTS and reminded me of Donkey doing the same stunt to Orge and Princess Fiona in Shrek2.

Anyway, since this a trip to attend relative's wedding dinner, we hardly have much time to eat out. Most times we have to be at the groom's place for all that wedding jazz. Thank goodness we managed to get most of what Penang, the food haven, have to offer in a dark and dingy kopitiam named Joo Hooi Café at the tip of Penang Road opposite Komtar. Managed to satiate our quest for assam laksa, prawn mee, char koay teow and chendul - all in one place. Thank goodness!

Dad had this bowl of prawn mee, which looked good to be but he busy slurping them all up. Nothing left for us to try at the end! Must be good judging from the clear broth with hints of red prawn oil.

JH - prawn mee

Mom and I have char koay teow (stir fried rice noodles). Mine had egg and so much ingredients in it... 2 huge fresh prawns, fish cakes and cockles. Not spicy enough though, well for me.

JH - ckt wo egg RM2.50 JH - ckt RM3

Since we were there a bit too early for breakie, the assam laksa stall was not ready yet. Kinda disappointed but luckily the man came and asked us if we would love to have one when they were ready!!! I quickly said yes for a small bowl to be shared. Not much rice noodles but its certainly not one of the best I've tasted in Penang. Must be too early as the soup will taste better as it simmers longer, over night even more oommmpphhh!!!

JH - assam laksa

Found these packets of nasi lemak on the tables. Didn't try any since we're quite full. Someone recommended the Shrimp (Udang) version in this coffee shop but I only found Fish (Ikan) on most tables.

JH - nasi lemak

The only one thing I craved for this trip is the chendul. We were allowed to order the Famous Teo Chew Chendul from the lane beside Joo Hooi. I think need to pay extra though. Not sure how much since I didn't pay for it. It is utmost Heavenly to me since I loved red beans and kidney beans which they do not stinge at all unlike those places in Kuala Lumpur. The gula melaka amount used is just nice, not overly sweet.
