When It`s Hot, Shop!

Coconino Plateau Moon

Now this is a moon!

Hello! My son and DIL took these pictures from camp at their property near Williams AZ. I am so happy he shared them with me.

It`s been very hot and very humid. Unusual weather for us. My sewing room is on the east side of the house. Too warm in the morning and then very humid past noon. We have air conditioning but I try to be frugal with it. When it`s 114 outside that`s hard to do. Yesterday we took a break, headed to town for a nice lunch at Chili`s. Thank you son and daughter in law for the gift card. After that we visited my favorite thrift shop and I bought five new shirts, they are Land`s End and Sears, for $5.00. I always check out the Pyrex, china, vintage sheets and aprons. Not much of that yesterday. It`s still humid today and a little over 100 at 9:30 this morning. Rabbits and birds are always here for water.

That`s all for today. Have to make a late breakfast for hubby.

Johnson Brother`s Tulip Time. A Vintage China Bonanza!

I visited the thrift shops yesterday after grocery shopping and was delighted to find four Johnson Brother`s Tulip Time square cereal bowls, 6 1/4". They are in excellent condition. No chips, cracks or crazing. No wear at all. At $2.00 each that`s an unbelievable price. The five pieces of Federal Heat Proof Glass was $4.50. The pattern is common but no idea on the pattern name. No matter what the site, the glass is known as White With Brown Flowers. Federal prices have tanked due to the ever increasing popularity of Fire King. There`s no wear on the smaller 1 cup bowls and two tiny scratches in the bottom of the larger 8" dish.

I found a wonderful website, Bustle and Sew. Helen, the website owner also has a fabulous blog, a free newsletter and a magazine with free patterns and lots of good sewing tips and information. All in glorious color. I can vouch for the newsletter and magazine. Both great. There are links in my sidebar if you`d like to have a peek at or buy Helen`s book, The Stitcher`s Companion and a link to purchase six month bundles of her magazine. I am a subscriber to both the newsletter and the magazine. Very enjoyable reads and I get fresh ideas all the time.

That`s about it for today. I `m doing yard work  while the weather is cool. And cleaning the dog run. The tomato plants are done. Too cold now at night. I keep my houseplants on the porch till we get close to a freeze.  The desert plants are blooming again. Fall is our second spring.

Take care everyone.

Thrifted Piecework Needlework Magazines

We stopped in a couple of thrift stores Monday and I found these divine Piecework Needlework magazines. Embroidery, knitting, lace, crochet and great tutorials. If you want to broaden your skills or learn a bit of linen history this is the magazine. Entertaining, a fun learning experience and beautiful color pictures. I love these books! They will be for sale in my shop Tuesday May 31.

I also bought a piece of Snowflake Pyrex and yellow Tupperware. I thought the Tupperware a bit pricey at two and three dollars, but I really wanted it. The Pyrex was 50 cents. It was a great day.

Thank you for visiting. I hope you are safe from tornadoes and storms. God Bless the people in Joplin and surrounding areas.

Desert Life and Thrifty Finds

Hello! Buckets of rain today, we sure do need it. With the rain comes lots of weeds, bugs and slithery creatures in the spring. The last two years I noticed insects I`d never seen here before and different breeds of birds. All came with the weather changes. Does the colder winter preclude a hotter summer? I hope not. The rain picture is my second story view.

I stopped in one thrift store Wednesday and found this gorgeous Patons Baby Cotton DK (Double Knitting). It is in original wrappers and clean. I bought all seven. This is the softest baby yarn I`ve felt. In the plastic bag is several yards of clean, unused bobbin lace, lengths of vintage eyelet trims and pastel blue satin ribbon with machine lace trim. We were in a hurry so that was my only "thrifty" stop.

Cat owners will understand the final picture. Bring a new chair into the house and kitty breaks it in. A neighbor once told me she loved walking by our home because there was always a cat in the sunny windows.

Thank you for stopping by,
Cathy

Thrift Store Treasures. Lace And A Handbag.

We had a great Thanksgiving celebration with my son and daughter-in-law. Good company and good food. It was freezing cold, day and night. Light snow off and on and constant wind. The kids did get out on their ATV exploring the desert. Brr! I stayed home enjoying the friendly warmth of the fire.

On to my thrifty finds. The first picture shows a portion of an appliqued elaborate table runner or dresser scarf. It is cutwork appliqued on net. Below that is the reverse side. I am still learning and don`t know the proper term for this particular type of embroidery on net.

The third picture is an  example of Filet Net or Knotted Net Lace. The mesh on which the pattern is  embroidered is actually hand knotted fish net. You can purchase the net or make it yourself. The linen stitch creates the fabric. I first thought the spaces were darned, but not so. Darning stitches go one way. The linen stitch goes across and up and down. Please check out the link. The piece below is an insert. Could be used on a decorative pillow or a bedspread. The spaces are filled with the linen stitch.

Last is this fabulous 1950`s vintage Etra handbag. It is embossed leather. The chain can be tucked into the bag and you have a gorgeous clutch. The handbag was 3.50 and retails for about 40.00.

I will continue my research on the applique piece. I haven`t found exactly what I have. Please feel free to comment. I`m going to frame the insert. I paid 25 cents for that and 50 cents for the applique scarf.

It`s warming outside and now I can do my chores. Everyone have a splendid day!

Thank you Carolyn at Harbor Hon for your information about the cutwork table runner!
