"the Michael Mayer Kompakt Remix of the song includes near the end (at about 7:23) a very brief, faint sample, only a couple seconds in length, lifted from the Boys' own "So Hard"—probably included more as an in-joke and/or "tip of the hat" more than anything else. It also sounds as though it includes, at several different junctures, samples of the soprano saxophone solo from one of the Brothers in Rhythm remixes of "How Can You Expect to be Taken Seriously?" — either the Extended Mix or the Classical Reprise; it's very difficult to tell for sure which."

"The Pet Shop Boys recorded their first live album at a special one-off concert at the Mermaid Theatre in London on May 8, 2006 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of their first big hit, "West End Girls." They were supported by the BBC Concert Orchestra and a slew of renowned guest stars—including Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, Lol Creme, Steve Lipson, Rufus Wainwright, Frances Barber, and Robbie Williams—on both instruments and vocals. (If you don't count their Battleship Potemkin dates, this was their first full-length live show with orchestral accompaniment.) Trevor Horn also served as musical director for the evening. "A cover version of a song by 1970's band Candlewick Green. The guest vocalist is Debsey Wykes, former member of Dolly Mixture and later, Birdie. It was originally recorded the previous year as a solo single for Debsey but shelved (this version appears on the album Nice Price) and eventually re-recorded and released as a duet, appearing on a double A-side with Hobart Paving as the lead track (though this cover achieved more radio play), the single reached #23 in the UK single chart."

El Perro Del Mar - it's all good, 2006

"With a voice that wavers between Jane Birkin's and Neil Young's, Swede Sarah Assbring, or El Perro del Mar as she calls herself, writes of hope and loneliness, sometimes at the same time. Cleary influenced by Burt Bacharach and Phil Spector, El Perro del Mar sings a kind of indie doo wop, bringing together syllabic backing harmonies ("sha-la-la-la," "shooby doo-wop bah," and "be-bop a loo-lah" are some of the phrases she uses throughout the album), poppy melodies, simple vocal lines, acoustic guitars, and twinkling pianos on her self-titled full-length. But despite these brighter, happier elements that envelop her music, Assbring has a kind of despair in her voice that veils even the most cheerful of her songs in sadness. "It's All Good," in which she echoes variations of "it's all good, take a new road and never look back" throughout the entire piece, even in its optimism, conveys the sense that at one point things in fact were not good at all, even though they might be changing, and the breezy warmth of "God Knows (You Gotta Give to Get)" is more of a criticism of herself for "taking a lot without giving back" than advice regarding the benefits of altruism."

"The single criticises the Identity Cards Act 2006. A statement from the band cited the issue as the reason that Neil Tennant ceased his well-publicized support of Tony Blair's Labour party. Some wording, such as 'sterile, immaculate', is drawn from Yevgeny Zamyatin's dystopian novel We, although Tennant hadn't read it when he wrote the lyrics. In the book, the inhabitants of the future One State try to build The Integral, a glass spaceship, in order to solve the cosmic equation and resolve all the problems in their One State."

Moby - slipping away crier la vie, 2006

"Produced and remixed by MHC in London, "Slipping Away (Crier la vie)" is a dance version of "Slipping Away" adds French lyrics. On his blog on September 9, 2006, then in the December 16, 2006 edition of the French newspaper Le Parisien, Moby stated that Farmer came to his restaurant Teany in New York and suggested to him that they record a duet version of "Slipping Away", as she had heard the song on his best of and liked it. He explained that she wrote her lyrics in French and they worked together at a distance from each other (New York and Paris). The song was very regularly aired by all French radio stations, including Fun Radio which aired it several times every day. As the song was very successful, new remixes were made and a second CD maxi and vinyl were released on November 15."

Isobel Campbell And Mark Lanegan - it's hard to kill a bad thing, 2006

"Ballad of the Broken Seas is an album by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, their first collaboration. It made the shortlist for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize and was one of NME's top one hundred albums of the decade. The Mercury nomination provoked some criticism, as Lanegan was American and the award is for British and Irish artists only. However, Campbell wrote most of the tracks and produced the album. Campbell had written the music and some of the lyrics before sending it to Lanegan."

The Flaming Lips - my cosmic autumn rebellion, 2006

"Here’s a song that gets everything right that “It’s Summertime” got wrong on Yoshimi. The same elements are there at the outset – soothing electronic tones that come in waves, birds chirping, and a generally sunny and euphoric feel. But this song isn’t content to spend its entire duration floating in the ether with a highly insecure melody and rhythm to guide it. Midway through, the electronic buzzing gives way to a little bit of timpani, and then an aural overload of guitar fuzz. It’s obnoxiously loud, and yet somehow still very beautiful. All the while, Wayne is singing about songbirds, and the refusal of some people to see the new life inherent in death during a season where leaves fall from the trees. While it’s a much prettier take on the subject, this hints at a few explorations of the topic of mortality that are still to come."
