Moooo.

Since some of you revealed they love the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, I thought you might also love to see "she" is honored in Alice like this 💜💚💛🧡

Alice... Back in the days and likely even now you find not only a huge rest area where you can stay over night(s) for free but also, now listen! Free.... HOT showers!!!!
Alice can get quite cold, being in the middle of nowhere, so this is a real treat! I think actually it´s for these guys passing through:

You know how it feels like when such a "monster" overtakes you?! It´s no thunder in bright daylight!

... but... if you click the card and read... "up to 85 km/h" is a lie. They roll around at 110!
On sealed roads at least.

This one likely transported cattle, and maybe even to Alice, where, in 1995, we went to heaven.
Mind you, back then I had no idea what Jerky was and the first was rather disappointing. But then we entered NT, or "The T" and found THE BEST JERKY!

And in Alice?! 1999 we found the place where it´s made! And not only that!!!!
The boss came out front (yeah, Hillbilly´s car parks in front, our number-plate sure gave us away, LOL):

She (it was a she-boss, her name was not Alice) invited us, showed us how it´s done, gave us the meat to taste right away, also Camel which was... not mine, I go for "moo"!
And every time we´re in Perth now we order "The Natural Taste Of The Territory".
You can guess how I smiled big when this arrived at our Caravan Park:

Culinary Heaven!!!!

Why we always wait till we´re in Perth?
We have to. 1999 we laughed and got this fella:

In Great Britain BSE broke loose and "the Aussies" made fun of it that way, this cow was  fidgeting "like crazy" and mooooing with it.
Funny, haha (she drowned along with Ingo´s apartment in 2007).
We are not allowed to get meat-products from Australia here in Europe! Australia, as far as I know, had not one single case of BSE, but...
Australia, Great Britain, The Queen (I don´t speak of lovely Freddie).

Twice... and pssst, don´t tell, we smuggled some into Germany.
Oh, boy, last time I SO needed to go, you know, but Ingo rushed me out of where customs might still get you/your luggage.
Worked!

We also made our own, see here, but our Territory just ain´t the same.

Oh, by now we´d done it a third time, but, darn you Corinna, we were not even in Perth.
No Jerky (yes, you can buy American Jerky here, but that´s not mine!!!!)

Henry 🦁

And he asked me to clarify, yes, Mum was a very strong beer, but these days it´s, in that can, nothing but malt, Henry just has a sweet tooth - the German link is much more detailed and google translate surely will help you, if you´re interested (it was shipped to places such as India and the Caribbean in the Middle Ages).

Also used in cooking, see here:

Hope you liked this little journey to the past. There is more to come...

BTW... I thank you for the Happy St. Patrick´s Day-wishes.
It´s not celebrated in Germany. We do have Irish Pubs (two I know of in Braunschweig), and maybe they had a good party-time there.
I fall asleep from one Guinness, so... not a good idea 😉 (Yes, I tried!)

Those road trains are scary, they do go very fast!
Sadly I don't like jerky or biltong, the dry meat just swirls around my mouth and makes me nauseous.
Nice look back at happy travel times.

Yes, those road trains go FAST! And they honk very loud, too, LOL.
Oh, you miss out on the Jerky, it´s healthy (I know, I should shut my mouth as no-fish-lover here ;-)....)

Kathy, oh? OH, sorry I didn´t see your e-mail! I really need to change this, it´s docked to blogger (and blogger so SO weird these days), my "real one.... I´ll send you... Yes, those trucks ARE scary! But in those places a good choice, I reckon....

When we were camping across the northern US, we were on interstate highways for some of the journey and those big trucks were crazy! And there were massive RVs. Sometimes Bill was driving our wee mid-size pick-up surrounded by these behemoths. Once he was just following tail lights on a twisty road, with a cliff on one side, in a massive rainstorm--the windscreen wipers couldn't keep up, the sky was black, we could not see anything in front of us except the lights of the truck ahead, and there was nowhere to pull off the road.

Iris Flavia said...

Oh, that sounds HORRIBLE!!! Well, but, that truck was a leader after all!

Oh yes, interesting

And fun.

Looooove this dearest Iris! I am so so happy you took me to Desert Australia! If there's one single place I would love to see in OZ, it's that desert! I really wanna se the Uluru!

those road trains are super scary for sure! But I commend the drivers of those big monsters, they sure are awesome drivers to be able to maneuver such massives! I havent tried Beef Jerky yet. My dad loves the Chinese Pork Jerky they always buy when they were kids but I would love to try that one you shared, seems salty and savory!

Love your photo with the ski hat super cute!

Iris Flavia said...

Dearest Stevenson,... no?
I saw Uluru, and the Olgas. Soooooo many people. At least now they are not allowed to climb it anymore. Second time we passed by and had to pay no fees. It was a disappointment. But I´ll gladly show some pics from around.

Hehehe, I met one driver, weeeee - he was mad. But, yes, they do an awesome job. If I wasn´t that chicken I might say I drove such a road train (if it was 300m) but he was mad... We were stuck, he lost a lot of money...

Beef Jerky is the.best (if you ask me).
And that´s my "Happy Hat" :-) It makes People smile 😊

I always enjoy your journey into the past. Looking forward to more!

Hate those monster trucks especially if driving a smaller car. The cow is cute. Not a fan of jerky as it's tough on old teeth. Or maybe I just never had the good stuff.

I enjoyed your time travel. Those big trucks are murder if you are in a small car. So glad you got to visit where they make Jerky. I'm not much of a fan of jerky because it is too hard and dry. But I sure enjoyed this look back you gave us and learned something, too.

Beef jerky. I have not eaten it since 1975 when my friends and I sailed around the Hawaiian islands for 5 days, eating it. Haha. Brings back memories.

Iris Flavia said...

Jeanie, thank you, I´ll obey ☺

____

CJ you never had the good stuff!

____

Elizabeth, I could munch on that stuff forever.
Glad you liked the journey, too.

____

gigi, go for it 😀

A nice trip down memory lane. I had a friend who made his own elk jerky and would send me some when I lived in Alaska. Best jerky I ever tasted, nice and spicy.

My gosh those triple trailer trucks look humongous!! I think those are outlawed here (I never seem them more than double). We have a lot of stuff here with "desert" and "queen" in the name... Desert Queen Mine, Queen Mountain, etc.

Iris Flavia said...

Bill, yum!

Spare Parts, I know and love!

I've never tried jerky. It just doesn't sound appealing.

My name is Erika. said...

Those road trains look like they would be scary to drive by. But when you are in the middle of no where, I can see why they do it. But the jerky tour looks like something fun to do. I did a mustard tour once myself.

peppylady (Dora) said...

Never heard term road train.
Coffee is on and stay safe

Iris Flavia said...

RedPat it´s yummy (the Northern Territory one).

____

Erika, a mustard-tour sounds yummy, too!! I love "Senfeier", mustard-egg, yum!

____

Dora, that´s crazy, thought you have them, too!

I'm wondering if you know how small a Leyland Mini car is. We had one when we lived in Victoria and would all of us pile in and make trips to Melbourne for shopping and one time we were on the middle lane and up comes two huge road trains, one on either side of us, both going much faster than we were, was a little bit scary since I had a baby on my lap at the time and three small kids in the back seat. Hubby was driving and managed to keep the car steady.
I love Priscilla Queen of the Desert, nice to see a pic of the hotel.

Iris Flavia said...

OH, River, that IS scary!!!! Yes, I ... or we.... got overtaken in 1999, too, just by one at a time, though, being squeezed in... huhhhh.... 1995 we overtook them but that was as scary. Will we make it in time?!
And then they started a project with "long-liners" in Germany, how crazy is that - never heard of that again.

I enjoyed the little trip into the past. :)
What at treat -- the jerky, the tour and the place to park-and-camp. And the showers. That's sweet. :)
