Another One Bites the Dust...

Seems like just yesterday,
I was being amazed it was April already.
Now, it's almost over.

Another month, bites the dust.

It's been busy.
Weeding, and mulching, and graveling.

I got the fenced yard almost finished.

Just have to clean up that bed at the back,
and along the Rio.

I got some of the Virginia Creeper cut back.
It wants to take over the world.
This is the before...

I got some things planted in the Veggie Garden...
tomatoes, squash...and, transplanted these cucumbers
that came up in the compost bed.

Not sure they'll do anything,
but, they were there.
Why not?

The grapevine is putting on buds.
It looked so bad last fall, we thought it had died.

The buds on the softleaf yucca opened.

Aren't they pretty?

As an extra treat, here's our neighbor's yucca blooming.
No wire around it, and the deer didn't touch it.

And, to finish out the month with more beauty...

Last fall I ordered some iris online.

I got them all planted and they all did good...except one.
But, that's a good record, for me.

And, they're blooming.

First, New Moon

Next, Peaches and Dreams.

And today, Discovered Treasure.

And, all together...

We had some light rain, and have a forecast for heavier rain tonight.
So, I went out and cut the open ones,
so we could enjoy them, inside.

Look how the peach of Peaches and Dreams,
and the peach in Discovered Treasure, match.

Isn't Nature wonderful?

So...that's it from here.
Hope you have a fun and safe weekend.

See you next month.

Harvest....

The veggie harvest hasn't been so good here this year.

Everybody around, has been showing their great harvests.

Not here.

Hmmm.....I did something wrong.

We had one nice Celebrity tomato.
It was very good.  It even got to ripen on the vine.
The squirrels must have thought it was too much trouble to go after just one.

But, look!
There are more!
It July.  In Texas.
Maybe our unusually cool weather (no triple digits yet),
have made the difference.

So now, I'm headed out to deal with this.

The squash hasn't done well.
The okra hasn't done well.

But, the cosmos is doing VERY well.

I'll have cosmos for the rest of my life.

How's your garden doing?

I'm headed out to clean up that mess, and plant more seeds.
I'm just hard headed enough not to give up.

Happy Gardening...

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood...2012...

Yesterday was hot and humid.
Today is cool and dry.  A beautiful day to be outside.

The palm is doing well, in the Island Bed.

And, lots of things are blooming.

We've had this chrysanthemum for about two years.  It blooms spring and fall.

The Autumn Sage...Salvia greggii...is blooming away.
The magenta ones that were here when we moved in, seem to do the best blooming.

The Coral vine has a few blooms.  It really needs to be moved to a sunnier place.

The cosmos in the veggie bed just keeps on going.

The knockout rose is liking the cool weather, and the extra rains this year.

This lantana has been blooming a lot this year.
You know...I see this kind all over the neighborhood, without a fence around it.
Why do the deer only eat the blooms off this one?
I have to put wire around it.

The Lion's Tail is blooming again.  I needed to prune it back.  And, it needs more sun.
So, it's moving sometime soon.

The Oleander is finally blooming.

The Turk's Cap seems happy at the back of the fenced yard.
It's been a challenge for me to get something to grow in this super shady spot.

The Mexican Bush Sage is putting on a show.

Truth in blogging....should I have pruned it, during the summer?
I'm not too happy with it flopping out into the yard.

And, I'm not too happy with the cannas here.  Only one bloom all summer.
There'll be some rethinking in this bed.

I must have picked a good spot for the Philippine Violet.

I love it's pretty purple blooms.

***********
Over in the Veggie Garden:

The Hyacinth Bean is looking good.

I've never cooked any of these beans.  Maybe I should.
There won't be any lack of seeds for next year, though.

I planted some Tatuma squash.  The guy at Natural Gardener steered me to these.
They're less likely to have the Squash Vine Borers.

That seems to be true.  But, they sure take over a space.

They have LOTS of pretty yellow blooms.

But, few squash. (?)  The squash are good, though.  They're a bit more like zucchini than
yellow summer squash.

And, look....the tomato vines are putting on fruit again.  The same vines from spring.
What a difference a year can make.

***********

Now, from the
DEER ARE EVIL
department.

This agave was growing and looking really good.
It dodged the Agave Snout Nose Beetle.

Then I go out and find this.  Shredded!!

Now, I have to figure out what to put in it's place.
This is the Drive Bed.  So far, the yuccas got zapped by the dreaded Snout Beetle,
and now the agave is shredded.
A Sotol maybe?
They don't seem to bother those.

***********
I hope it's beautiful in your neighborhood.

Jeepers Creepers...

Cue eerie music.....

Holes in the Brussels Sprouts leaves!

Holes in the Swiss Chard!

Holes in the Sugar Snap Peas leaves!

YIKES!!

Well...I'm not sure what was going on with the Snap Peas.
They were about done, anyway.  And, they had what looked like some powdery mildew.

BUT....the others have WORMS!

I'm not sure if these are Imported Cabbageworms,
or Cabbage Loopers.  I didn't see the moth stage.

But, the result is the same.  They've made a mess.
And, they're setting in to make even more of these!

Some are large...some are very small.
You can judge the size of the one above, by comparing to the Pillbug.
Oh, yeah...we have lots of pillbugs, too.

So, the Brussels Sprouts got pulled out.  I checked EACH LEAF, and dispatched each worm.
I checked over the Chard...found two good sized DARK green worms, and dispatched them.
They didn't do as much damage.  I'll check again later today.

The Brussels Sprouts had grown into huge plants.  Nice looking plants.
I don't think we were going to get sprouts.  It's getting too hot.
But, they were trying.  See those little buds?

Some other huge plants...these cilantro plants are five feet tall!
I had no idea they got that big.

Then there's this....yellow fungus.

It's very strange.

Jeepers creepers!  What is going on?

Just more challenges for a gardener.

NOTE:  Darla from Florida, gave us the name of this.
'Dog Vomit Fungus'.  Appropriate name.
Thanks, Darla....

Update:

Thanks to all of you, for your input on the Lamb's Ear in the Island Bed.
It will stay, for now.

It certainly seems to like where it is.

OK...I better get back out there on worm patrol.

Happy Gardening...
