NNC 4th Anniversary meet

This is a belated posting. Its' about NNC 4th Anniversary meet on March 19 that I couldn't attend as I can't possibly get away on a Saturday due to my ' chauffeur duties' . However, Margaret talked me into taking up the anniversary exchange when I was contemplating some surprise gifts for the meet. This is what I made for the anniversary exchange gift drawn by Rose on behalf of Shanny in Switzerland. The must have conditional requirement for the exchange is a compulsory heart in gingham fabric. So this was mine. Sorry about the blurry picture. There's even a prize for the best gingham heart.and here's the whole lot of the pretty and creative gingham hearts from the group members who took part, photo courtesy from Veronica. My contribution towards the lucky draws for the meet. I put together 2 simple packages, nothing fancy or 'WOW" stuff , just to inject some surprises and fun and hopefully enjoyed by the winners. This was drawn by Tini and below by Usha. Much thanks to Margaret W who have made all these possible on my behalf ;PYou can read all about that wonderful day and mouth watering food from the Group owner's blog, Nik. My exchange gift from the draw was Diane in Myrtle Beach, USA.

The gift is just simply fabulous. I loved it !! Sorry the picture is again blurry here. (I am using DS's Canon camera that I am not familiar with its function.) Her gingham heart in chicken scratch embroidery ( hope I got this correctly) finished into a needlebook.
On Sunday, tea time was this Mini Custard Fruit Tartlets. It disappeared rather immediately after serving, so I guessed it was good. Confession, I didn't bake the pastry shells but bought ready made , only cook the custard fillings and top it fruits. One day, I shall try baking the shells.I found this simple and quick cook CUSTARD FILLING

Source from : Home Sweet Home.

Ingredients :

2 tablespoons flour

2 tablespoons custard powder or cornflour (I used cornflour)

8 tablespoons sugar

2 cups (500ml) fresh milk

2 eggs

2 tablespoons butter

Method :

1. Mix flour and custard powder/cornflour in a pot and add 2 tablespoons fresh milk. Stir to mix.

2. Add in sugar till dissolved and follow with the egg and mix.

3. Add in balance of the milk.

4. Cook on low fire and stir continuously till the mixture is smooth and not lumpy.

5. Once the mixture thickens and shiny, it's ready.

Remove from fire and allow to cool, before scoop the custard fillings half full into the shell and arrange fruits of your choice.

Last nite, I tried a Strawberry Chiffon Cake that was a joy to look for like five minutes. It deflated which deep down inside me knew was coming, coz' my white eggs didn't reach stiff peak, thou it did rise but not to expectation, I knew this was so important for chiffon. Also, the recipe did not call for Cream of Tartar that seems to be in every Chiffon cake recipe I had come acrossed, but not this one. I also noted that after adding the strawberry puree, the batter was rather watery, being my first chiffon and inexperience, I had no idea what I should add to revert the situation and decided to go ahead, maybe that is how it should be, so I thought.Result was this, a layer of damp ring and my strawberries sank to the bottom. Now, I knew how wrong was I, LOL . Maybe I shouldn't have been too over zealous with my first attempt, start with basics !! ' sigh'

Tomorrow is April already? Gosh! Three months has just whoosh by so very quickly. This weekend its Qing Ming Festival or Tomb Sweeping Day at the cemetery or coloumbrium (hope I got this word correctly) where the living offer respects in remembering the deceased loved ones and relatives. Its a yearly rituals .

Three months into the year and I haven't accomplish anything that I can be proud of, crafting wise that is. Tomorrow is Fool's Day. Enjoy or should I say, be alert and don't get fooled ? LOL

Oh! before I forgot, I received the 3rd Round Needlework RR on Monday, Diane's piece. Pictures next post.
Thanks for visiting, have a good weekend.

Ellen and to all who commented in my last post, thanks for stoping by with your sweet comments :)

Just before Christmas

I am ending my post for year 2009 with this last exchange that came from Nela for my HoE Floss Tag exchange, which came yesterday.

I am amazed with the contents that came out from the box. Scent of lavender filled my living room and the scent became stronger as I opened the box. What a lovely time to received the lavender potpourri, I am putting it on my dressing table tonite. Nela had given me more than a floss tag. As always, Nela is a superb crafter and her finishing is always so fabulous .

Isn't all these gorgeous?? Nela had stitched a design by Victoria Sampler's sachet and incorporate the same design for my floss tag.
included is the rose pins, wished I could take a better pictures of all these.
The floss tag with metal charms that came with the lovely floss rings and yummy, yummy flosses.
Thank you so much, Nela, everything so beautiful and I loved it. Its really, really worth the wait.
* Gracias tanto Nela, todo así que hermoso y yo lo amó. Su realmente, realmente digno de la espera*

Fruits Galore

Every year about this time, its our fruits season. Two weeks back, I took a walk around the back yard and spotted these? Last weekend, we harvested the fruits.

Its one of my favourite, the Mangoesteen (Gracinia Mangostana) look at the white segments of the flesh...juicy and sweetly.
and this was sitting on the front porch when we got home on Saturday, 2 boxes full of the durians (Durio zibethinus) MIL used to have 3 durian trees in the back yard including a chiku (chickle sapodila ) tree and pulasan (poolasan) (Nephelium mutabile Blume - which is a close allie of the rambutans) before they were fell to make way for space to dry cuplumps rubber or rubber scrap.this carries a strong smell which might be unpleasant to some but the rich cream custard like pulp is sure a yummy!
2 types of Jackfruit, the smaller 2 are Cempedak (Artocarpus chempeden) and the larger one, this is really hugh in size is the Nangka (Artocarpus heterphyllus). These were planted in the old house.

Eat the Cempedak fresh or made it into fritters but not the nangka. Nangka is always eaten fresh or is there any other way?
* Images of the ' cut open' fruits are from image search as I have yet to cut the fruits. These are part of our local fruits

Now for some stitching news
Received word from Dawn that she received my PIF - my 3rd. I gave Dawn her favourite things which are : color blue, pussycats and a lighted Eeyore pen by Disney and 2 cuts of fabrics. Design by Aurelle, if I am not mistaken..I must check this out and finished into a pinkeep and surprisingly this took a shorter time to reach her compared to the last envie.

The back in batik fabric
Edit : Confirmed its a Design freebie by Aurelle - freebie link
Gail Bussi's Hearts Entwined, considered done? except for the beads, a heart charm and the words above those heartsAnother new...all I can say about this is that, its not a bell..I'll reveal when I have more to show.
Opps! there is no update on the Garden Fairies for last month, I'll make some time to work on the GF this week and hopefully a little progress to share by next posting.
Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your visits very much and I wish everyone a good week ahead.

My 2nd PIF

For Lisa arrived last week. My handmade item is a tape measure, now you know why I made the first one. My choice for Lisa is lacy things in earthy tones. If I remember correctly, it falls under her favourites. (and I had to pinch the tape measure photo from Lisa's blog for mine..LOL)

I finished Part 9, the final installament for the Old Sampler. Completed my LHN theme exchange during the weekend and only managed 2 stumpwork berries and am now working on my Rose Sampler Part 4 . My 3rd PIF is still in progress and the on my to do list are :

1) Sea/Summer theme MA at Mail Art Friends
2) Quaker theme exchange at Hooked on Exchange
3) 3 personal exchanges and some birthday gifts

Oh ! I've started something new...unfortunately no photos because the camera batteries went dead and I'm at the moment too lazy to make stops on my way home to get new ones...its been raining daily here and I've been feeling feverish on and off for days.

As of Monday, school reopens..whew! no more worries what they are up to at home while I'm at work..LOL and I had some good mail day since Monday. Pictures need no words, so looks like I will have to make a trip to the store .

Thanks for visiting me and for your time to comment.

PIF for Joanne

Received news from Joanne who is on my PIF list that she received from me. I made her a pinkeep in a similar fabric color from an exchange at HoE Biscornu whom Joanne was my partner. It gave me the idea to give Joanne a matching pinkeep. Am so glad she likes the idea too. Thank you Joanne !

I've mailed 2 out of my 4 PIFs. After weeks and months of pondering...LOL.... I've decided that I will not do similar pieces or design for all my PIFs. Am currently working on my 3rd piece . I will reveal individually why or how I made my choice and hopefully accepted by my receipients.

Next, twice a month SAL progress of my Garden Fairies with Aw

I did not work much on this as I decided to work on the backstitches on the section that is done.

Why ? my fear that if I leave the back stitches for last, I might never get it done! LOL. Its tedious and I never like doing back stitches especially more that need to color change and with metallics threads.

PIF and Sweets

My beautiful gift, from the PIF came from Mylene . Thank you so much, yes I loved it, Mylene, your finishing is fabulous, never expected it to come so soon either.

The whole package that came from Mylene

Cupcake or Sweet Exchange organized by Jess for NNC . Yeah! I have enough of donuts already..LOL

I need to comeup with something for this exchange and the first thot was something to do with a hook and yarn but I had no instructions. Its an awful position to be in huh?? So, I took with me a couple of yarns and a hook, carried it for a couple of days everywhere I go until one day in January I just told myself its time to cook something or my partner is not going to get any.....and came up with this, my first cupcake, a strawberry with cream and colored sugars (pins) . Its a trial piece and since I came up with the design from my head, size and all there is no instructions and am too lazy to take notes either. With that, I proceed to my second one, a chocolate with cream icing. If I recalled correctly, I think my partner is a chocolate lover and since this is the better looking one, it shall be the exchange piece. Just hoped my partner will not scream..yikees !!

My package to my partner, Rose includes the donut (pincushion), an ice cream cone (fridge magnet) and a sweet recipe which is also a must. Now, don't blame me for the toothache Rose, blame Jess! LOL.. (just kiddiiing) ..oh ! there's the Hershey's chocolate too which I left out for the photo.

My recipe which is a must to go with the exchange, I choose a book simply titled 'desserts', a mini cook book with 35 easy to follow yummy recipes by Marshall Cavendish Cuisine

A peek inside ,(clockwise) : Thai mango rice and pancakes with grated cocount

And the most embarrassing part was, I got the mailing date mixed up and mailed it out like a month early!! HORROR !! The actual due date was yesterday and I've spoilt the fun for my partner! I was sort of under the weather last month with a bad cough and I blamed that for being so blurry. So, I secretly began planning for a 'surprise' something' for mailing out on the actual mailing date, can't lived with the fact that my partner is not going to get anything in the mail comes the actual due date and missed all the excitement with the rest of the gals.

To tell you the truth, nothing came into my mind until last weekend, somehow I managed to re-produced an old design, the cup and saucer pincushion which I had one made ages ago. Guessed that gave me the idea of the mini chocolate cake with coffee and vanilla cream, topped with a mint and a red cherry served in a purple bowl (partner's fav color) and saucer. Those pinkish color sugared lookalikes are actually the pin heads. Think it measured approximately 4.5".

Am now able to revealed, after Rose J, my partner, received the surprised gift yesterday. Whew! am truly relieved.

This is how the 3-D veins look like when done. Not totally a satisfaction I would say and its not an easy task for me to hold the wire and the floss at the same time.

Thank you everyone for your visits and leaving me your lovely comments.

PAY IT FORWARD

I've signed up for a Pay It Forward (PIF) Exchange on Mylene's blog. PIF is based on the concept of the movie “Pay it Forward” where acts or deeds of kindness are done without expecting something in return, just passing it on, with hope that the recipients of the acts of kindness are passed on. Yes, this have been going on for quite awhile now.

So my pledge is that I will make and send a handmade gift to the first 5 people who leave a comment to this post on my blog and I hoped that you will do the same on your blog. By the way, you got 365days to finish and mail your gift, that's a whole year. I do not know what my gift will be yet and you will not be getting in a month or the month after next either BUT in between 6 to 8 months time from now, a package will come from me. That's a promise. AND, if you don't sign up, it only means that you are giving me a chance to receive something WITHOUT the need to give back...and hear my 'evil laughing' echoing away....SO, make my life difficult will you? LOL
All you have to do now after leaving me your comments, please email me your addie.
