Kirkman's Invincible continues to be one of the best books on shelves, and if all the superhero franchise movies are actually converting anyone to reading superhero comics (yeah, right) Invincible is the book they should get into. The current story has Bulletproof filling in for the real Invincible, with mixed results. Here's a preview...

There isn't any fighting in this 5 page preview of Invincible #83. Still, this is one of the best previews I have read in a long time. Superb writing and art that addresses all the conflicts (physical and otherwise) that are likely to erupt in this issue.

I haven't read Invincible for a while, but I feel safe saying it's still the best superhero comic in the universe, not just because it has characters like Dinosaurus (above), but also because of the moments like the pages below...

I'm always happy to find out someone finds a new book they like because of this blog, and my dude Mutantstar on Twitter is hooked on Invincible based on my raving about it (you're welcome). So if you, like Mutantstar, are catching up reading the trades, you may not want to check out this 5 page preview from Invincible #75. For everyone else, peep the sampling of this super-sized episode of TheViltrumite War storyline.

Obama Pals around with... Spawn?
One of the reasons I love Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead, The Destroyer) is his sense of humor. He's released a series of teaser ads for this summer's Guardians of the Globe miniseries parodying the I Am An Avenger joints that Marvel's been dropping (for the record, Obama is NOT gonna be on the team).
Lucky Number 69...
Aliens all have their eyes on the Earth right now in the pages of Invincible! click the cover for a free preview of Invincible #69. here's the sales pitch:
EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT NOW!
Who is Universa?! Why did she come to this planet in search of the one called Invincible? What does it have to do with the impending Viltrumite Invasion?! And why did she decide to come NOW, on the eve of an attack from the SEQUIDS?! The answers to all these questions and even more questions piled on top of them – in this issue of Invincible.
click the pic for a free preview, then snag this issue from your comic shop on December 23rd. Series writer Robert Kirkman packs as much action, suspense (and characters) into each issue of Invincible as a whole multi-book crossover at Marvel or DC. It's my favorite superhero comic... if you've never read it, just cop the 400 page "Ultimate collection" for a friend here, then 'borrow' it! Christmas Spirit FTW!
holla!

Rex Plode's Origin Starts HERE
it's well known to my readers that i heart Robert Kirkman's superhero smash Invincible, so when i tell you that i expect the new 3 issue Atom Eve & Rex Plode miniseries by Benito Cereno and Nate Bellgarde to be just as good, you should take that as a ringing endorsement. here's the sales pitch:Picking up right where the first ATOM EVE miniseries left off! See the secret origin of Rex Splode! See what shaped him into the man who tragically sacrificed himself in the Invincible War. Witness his first meeting with Atom Eve and learn their stunning secret!
Based on how ill the Atom Eve mini was, i can't see myself missing this. but don't take my word for it! click the pic above to preview the Rex Plode origin (yup. 9 free pages!), or click the pick on the right for a 5 page preview from the Atom Eve collection which is already in stores! get fired up, party people! Invincible Presents: Atom Eve & Rex Plode hits stores Wednesday October 28th.
Atomic Boobs FTW
here's another 5-page preview of Invincible (#65, courtesy of the fine folks at CBR) which features a heartfelt moment between Invincible and his girlfriend Atom Eve. ole boy's in a sling after last-issue's battle royale (you should see the other guy), and apparently this issue is primarily gonna be a pause in the action for the writer-artist team of Kirkman and Ottley to tally up all the characters they offed in the world-smashing Conquest story arc. click the pic for a peek at the best superhero comic in the Universe, people (you'll know what i meant by that title once you read the preview)! holla!

One Wrecks, the other DESTROYS!
Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker (creators of Invincible) have reunited to work on The Destroyer for the Marvel MAX line. because MAX is a mature reader line, they'll be able to bring the ultra-violent brand of comicbook storytelling that Kirkman sprinkles all over his creator-owned books like Invincible, The Walking Dead, and The Astounding Wolfman. Kirkman has done other books for Marvel, but appears to be especially geeked to work on The Destroyer. "[the Destroyer is] touted as being Stan Lee's first comic creation, so I thought that aspect was very cool." said the writer in an interview over at CBR. "It's my favorite thing that I've done at Marvel and I've only written one script so far," he remarked. "I'm really thrilled with this series."
The Destroyer is about a WWII-era superhero who has been fighting crime for decades. upon discovering he is dying, he decides to hunt down and kill each and every one of his villains so they won't be able to plague the world after he is gone... and if you think an eighty-year-old superhero can't get busy, just click any picture to view preview pages. This really reminds me of the movie Watchmen, and that's a good thing (if you haven't read my Watchmen review, go here)!
The Destroyer written by Kirkman, with art by Cory Walker and covers by Jason Pearson, is set to debut in September, so keep your eyes peeled fam! peep the interview with Kirkman and preview art by Cory Walker to tide you over...holla!

2008 ghettoManga Awards Nominees: Movie of the Year
movie of the Year rules: if it was out this year, it qualifies. look, i don't check release dates, and i have a tendancy to get to things late... so i don't worry about none o' that! if i geeked on it this year, it qualifies! so any movie (including animated features, if they are FLY enough!) that was out in theatres, on teevee, or on dvd qualifies...
anyways, here's the nominees:
i wrote a fairly well-received review of Kung-Fu Panda earlier this year, and upon re-reading it, i stand by what i wrote. this movie impressed me with its ability to entertain kids and adults simultaneously, and i enjoyed the comedic style more than previous Dreamworks animated films like Shrek. i have surprisingly little interest in the 3D animation explosion, but can put the cap on my Haterade long enough to acknowledge such a well-conceived and executed story.
Chris Nolan's original onscreen version of the world's greatest detective did what other superhero films WISH they could: Batman Begins actually added to the mystique of DC's line-walking vigilante! so when the Joker card was pulled at the end, the sequel buzz immediately began. The untimely death of Heathe Ledger only made it worse... his turn as the ultimate psycho clown prince of crime has fanboys and girls crying Oscar, so how could i pass by the record-smashing hero noir The Dark Knight?
before Lyndsy Lohan or Paris Hilton ever got their hands around a cold gold can, Robert Downey Jr brought addiction back in a big way, risking the ruin of a brilliant acting career on both the big and small screens, so who better to play the alcoholic thrill-seeking genius Tony Stark, the invincible Iron Man? Director John Favreau shocked the comics faniverse with the widescreen debut of everyone's favorite shell-head Avenger, not to mention more than a few easter-eggs that still have nerds buzzing!
unless you don't get out much, you've probably watched a movie where Chiwetel Ejiofor (Inside Man, American Gangster, Serenity, Talk To Me, Four Brothers, Children of Men) gave a stellar performance. but you haven't really seen what he's capable of until you've seen Redbelt.
Ejiofor deserves to be the next important black movie star. he is always believable, as a villain or a sidekick, or here, as a wise martial arts Sensei who seeks to teach his students how to turn any situation to their advantage. if you haven't seen this... SEE IT!
Marvel Comics has got it right: go get a good script. attach top-notch actors, and get out of the way! The Incredible Hulk, an apology to fans who really hated Ang Lee's psychological analysis of the gamma irradiated monster, served up more action and a decent love story, plus more of Hulk smashing people, places and things. Ed Norton and Tim Roth brought serious acting pedigree, and a quick cameo by Downey's Tony Stark helped continue the now-confirmed rumors that Marvel's building a full-blown Marvel Movie Universe (tee-hee!)...
don't let the box-office fool you: Speed Racer is the BOMB! those silly Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix trilogy) return to their director's chairs to bring us one of the best family movies that no families went and saw. a troublesome marketing program (or lack thereof...), confused fan and critical reaction, and the unexpected super-success of Iron Man contributed to serious tanking of this film. but believe me when i tell you, it is a visionary film! the Wachowskis do justice to the precursor to the anime invasion, creating a film that celebrates the best aspects, not only of the Speed Racer cartoon, but other 'toons like it.
any of these wold make great additions to your DVD collection, and you probably wanna see 'em all! that said, there can be only one winner... The 2008 ghettoManga Awards will jump off next month, so stay tuned for more nominees!

Invincible turns 50
one of my favorite comics (and probably the best superhero comic in the universe), Invincible reached issue #50 this month, not an easy task for essentially an indie comic (it is the best-selling comic at Image, but it's still an indie...). in this issue, Invincible turns on Cecil Stedman, his boss at the Global Defense Agency, when he finds out the GDA are employing murderers that he helped bring (he thought) to justice. it doesn't take long for the disagreement to erupt into a world-spanning battle royale that not only leaves Invincible on the outs with the GDA, but puts his relationship with the Teen Team and love interest Atom Eve in question.
Also in this issue, we get to peep "The Secret Origin of Cecil Stedman", where we get to see the back-story behind the man our hero just fell out with. like the main story, it is written by Invinciboss Robert Kirkman and drawn by series artist Ryan Ottley, but this story is inked by Cliff Rathburn and colored by my main man Kelsey Shannon.the issue also features a Science Dog backup by Kirkman and Invincible co-creator Cory Walker, with colors by Fco Placencia. the story showcases how smart Science Dog is through the exchange of banter with his enemy, who has come to expect a lot from him.
on a sad note, this will be the last issue colored by Bill Crabtree, who's moving on to pursue other things. his work on Invincible has been nothing short of brilliant, and his choice of colors are always surprising and vibrant.
peace Bill!

Hector Plasm makes Wizards top 200!
Hector Plasm: De Mortuis by storytellers Benito Cereno (Tales from the Bully Pulpit) and Nate Bellegarde (Atome Eve), chronicles the adventures of Hector Plasm, a cat who roams the earth protecting the living from the dead and vice versa.
De Mortuis collects Hector's previous appearances from Invincible and Western Tales Of Terror as well as over 30 pages of all-new spine-tingling adventures, and (oh by the way) was named to Wizard's "The 200 Greatest Comics in Wizard's History [July 1991 to Now]" which as Nate said is "kind of a big deal..." . for the record, De Mortuis was colored by Jacob Baake and Randall Whiteis with a snazzy cover by Cory Walker and Alex Stodolnik.holla!
