Saturday's Critters # 468

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

These are images from our last two days in Kauai. One of my favorite places to visit was the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge and home of the Kilauea Point Lighthouse. Reservations are needed to visit this wildlife refuge. I made reservations a month in advance for the morning of Sept 29th and the afternoon of Sept 30th. Over the years a remarkable 27 species of Seabirds have been observed at Kilauea Point.

Click on photos for better viewing!

1. It is the best place to view sea birds, like the Red-footed Booby, Great Frigatebird,  Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Red-tailed Tropicbirds, White-tailed Tropicbirds, Brown Booby and the Nene Goose.

2. A tree on the bluff decorated with the Red-footed Boobies.

Below several looks at the adult and juvenile Red-footed Boobies. Most of the adults have the red feet and are white with black flight feathers. They can have pale bluish bills. The juveniles are similar to the young Brown Boobies.

3. The colony of Red-footed Boobies at Kilauea Point is the largest colony in the Hawaiian Islands. All the tiny white dots on the bluff are the Red-footed Boobies, you can not see the grayish looking juveniles mixed in, the numbers of birds seen were amazing.

4. Below both the White-tailed Tropicbirds and the Red-tailed Tropicbirds are breeders at Kilauea.  There have been 350 pairs of the Red-tailed Tropicbirds nesting at the refuge.

5. The Brown Boobies have been seen roosting on a little island seen from the cliff top above. The Brown Booby has a chocolate brown head and a white belly. Most nest on the ground in small colonies.

The Great Frigatebirds have been seen using the island too. These birds tend to chase other birds trying to steal their food.

6. The juvenile Red-footed Booby, was sitting on a structure next to the Lighthouse. It did not seem to mind us walking by on the path right below.

7. The Wedge-tailed Shearwaters nest at the refuge using burrows in the ground. I found a few chicks nestled in the burrows.

8. The Wedge-tailed Shearwater are the most numerous species on the refuge, it is estimated 8,000-15,000 breeding pairs.

9. The Great Frigatebird below, it is amazing to watch their aerial performances.

10. The Nene Geese have one of the largest concentrations at the Kilauea Point wildlife refuge. Their population is increasing and they are doing well at the refuge.

11. Views of the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge and lighthouse.

I hope you enjoyed the Kauai birds and posts. Now, maybe I can catch up with more recent outings and trips.

Happy Thankful Thursday!

Happy Thursday!

I am thankful for all the beauty around me, during our Chincoteague getaway we were able to see a few sunrise and sunsets.  I am thankful hubby and I had safe travels and  a great little trip.

"May every sunrise bring you hope, may every sunset bring your peace!"

Click on photos for larger viewing.

1. The first morning and sunrise, a beautiful start to the day!

2.  Assateague Island Lighthouse, closed due to Covid. But we could walk around the outside.

3. The beauty around us, we hike the marsh trail.  We were surprised to see so many yellow flowers  all around us.  A few purple blooms, I m not sure of the id for either flower.

" Believe in something beautiful again. "

4.  I watched these kites while waiting to see the sunset.

Hope makes our life a little brighter, peace brings us all a little nearer. Joy makes our hearts a little lighter.

Happy Thankful Thursday!

 Hello, Happy Thankful Thursday!

Dec 23rd it was our 2nd day in Florida. Yay for the sunshine! We headed to Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine Florida and stopped at various beach parks on the way back down the coast.

We spent some time walking on the beach at the Anastasia State Park, had a view of the Saint Augustine Lighthouse, me and my shadow, flowers, Gopher Tortoise, Brown Pelicans, Osprey and the Great Egret.

The Gopher Tortoise likes sandy soil, dunes and coastal grasslands. They dig a burrow and spend most of their lives in the burrow. This Tortoise shares it burrow home with possibly as many as 360 other species including snakes, mice, fox, skunk, frogs, rabbits, armadillo, lizards and burrowing owls. Can you imagine  co-existing with so many different species? The burrow can be 52 feet long and 23 feet deep.

Me and my shadow on Anastasia State Park beach.  LOL, I look headless, my camera up to my face.

The Brown Pelican is one of my favorite birds, I love watching them in flight.

Heading back down the coast we stopped at the River to Sea beach.  I heard and saw a group of these birds before I found one of them sitting on a wire near the River to Sea Preserve. The Nanday Parakeet or also known as the Black-hooded Parakeet.

I am always thankful to be able to go on a road trip or any kind of trip.
I am always thankful for the sunshine!
I am always thankful for your visit and comments.
Live simple and be happy!  😊

Pompano Beach Florida

Hello and happy Monday!

During our visit to Florida we made a quickie visit to Pompano Beach Florida. This is a busy city and is located just north of Ft. Lauderdale. The nearby Hillsboro Inlet forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. My main reasons or goal for visiting Pompano beach was to see the parakeets that were being seen near the beach and Pompano Pier and to see the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse.

I was lucky to get a metered spot right in front of the beach and so lucky my parking spot was right in front of the tree were the Blue-crowned Parakeets were being seen. As soon as I got out of our car I could hear the noisy parakeets. There may have been 15-20 of the pretty parakeets in the one tree. These Blue-crowned parakeets are my newest lifer.

Photos in the mosaic, I was able to zoom in on the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse. Black Skimmer were on the Pompano Beach along with some pretty Terns. The beach and water had this ugly red seaweed, it did not look like the usual sea weed I am used to seeing.

Below is my parakeet tree, the parakeets almost blended in with the green leaves.

I didn't count them but there were maybe 30 or more Black Skimmers on the beach and with some Terns and Gulls.

A closer look at the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, there was a helicopter flying by when I took the photo from the Pompano beach. Lighthouse tours are offered only once a month and it includes a boat ride to the island where the lighthouse is located.

Thanks for your visit today!  I hope you enjoyed my post and photos.

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Florida

Hello and Happy Monday!

Jan 5th,  we visited one of my hubby's favorite places in Florida which was the Blowing Rocks Preserve near Jupiter Florida. We read about this preserve in one of our AAA magazines and knew we had to visit. It is a Nature Conservancy preserve, a protected section of limestone coastline. During high tides the waves crash against the rocks and force the water at times as much as  50 ft skyward.

This is the trail to the beach. The sea grape tree provide a shady walk to the beach.

A pretty day to be at the beach, calm ocean water.

The limestone rocky shore.

The Sanderlings were seen on all the beaches in Florida.

A lovely sky day, I enjoy watching the clouds.

These Ruddy Turnstones were begging for food from the fisherman on the beach.

The ocean has carved some interesting shapes and holes into the limestone rocks.

While hubby was enjoying watching the waves hitting the rocks, I was enjoying the pelicans flying by me.

A map of the preserve location in Jupiter Florida.

We also took a walk to see the nearby Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, Jupiter Florida

Thanks for your visit today!  I hope you enjoyed my post and photos.
