Are You Surprised?

Image
I was pleasantly surprised that Wyoming citizens visit public libraries so much. I’d be curious of the patrons’ average age. Does your state’s rating surprise you?  I use the library’s Libby app extensively throughout the year to listen to audiobooks. In the winter, I go to the library on Friday afternoons and work on a jigsaw puzzle or just browse the shelves.  The Laramie library also has knitting needles and crochet hooks to checkout, which I think is brilliant. Last year, they were offering free yarn, as well.

Check It Out!

Albany County mobile library August 2022 Before the pandemic, the public library purchased a used mobile library from National County. It was refurbished and painted to identify it as the Albany County book mobile. The library posts its schedule and travels to areas that contain apartments, frequently visited stores, and outlying areas. A couple of weeks ago I found the book mobile in the Middle School parking lot about three blocks from my apartment. How cool is that!

Reaching Out

library knitting August 2018 All the boxes are unpacked, most of the items have been put away, and life is starting to settle into a new routine. Now, I plan to venture out and find individuals who share some of my interests. I found some local knitting opportunities. On Wednesday afternoon, I knit with some ladies at the senior center; on Saturday afternoon, I went to the local library for the weekly "Sit and Knit," but I was the only one who showed up. The librarian told me that attendance is sporadic, so I'll go a couple more times to see if others attend. Cowgirl Yarns, the local yarn shop, also hosts a knitting group on Mondays. I am confident that between these three groups I will be able to connect with other knitters. Laramie also has two quilt shops, and one of them hosts a Quilt of Valor group. I plan to attend some of their organized QOV sew-ins to meet some quilters.

Outdoor Concerts

Image
Woodpile Riverton Branch Library June 2018 Weekly outdoor concerts started on Wednesday, June 27, 2018. The crowd that evening was small but appreciative. I think the temperatures that day (high 90s) discouraged people from coming out; however, it was pleasant in the shade of the building and the pine trees that towered overhead. Woodpile, a folk music group, performed mostly songs the members had written. Besides the instruments shown in the photo, they also played the banjo and mandolin. The free concerts at the library will continue on Wednesday evenings through July with different performers at each concert. Do you attend outdoor concerts in your community?

Free Little Library - Lander

Image
Free Little Library Deer Valley Road Lander, WY October 2016 This cute Little Library has been on my radar since March, and last week I finally ventured out to find it. It's located in a quiet rural subdivision off of the Sinks Canyon Road. packed with a wide variety of books I always take a book with me on my Little Library adventures, so I can add to the collection. This library was well stocked: it contained writings by Shakespeare, children's books, novels, and non-fiction. I left my book, and took a copy of the Piano Tuner. Even though this Free Little Library is not in a densely populated area, it is a bright spot on the side of the road, and encourages others to take a good book to read.

Another Free Little Library

Free Little Library near track Riverton High School March 2016 I went for a walk a couple of weeks ago and spotted another Free Little Library in my community. This one is right next to the football field and track. In 2014, I found a  Little Library  in Lander. There may be another Little Library near the Riverton golf course: I'll check it out one of these days. Have you noticed any new Little Libraries in your community recently?
