Wyoming Mural

Image
Sometimes it's difficult to get a good photo of the murals in Downtown Laramie. This Wyoming mural is large and covers the entire side of the building. I love how the artist painted the "shadow" the antelope mount casts. It gives a realistic touch to the mural as do the map rolls by the building entrance. Last week's mural closeup of the Post-It note can be seen above the second white vehicle in the photo and to the right of the coffee mug in the photo on the right.  Laramie has a LOT of murals and more are being added all the time.

Wildflower Mural

Image
Wildflowers  in the alley between Third and Fourth Streets Laramie, WY The newest mural in Laramie is definitely one of my favorites, and just seeing it as I drive down Third  Street makes me smile. It’s an explosion of wildflowers on the back of a medical clinic. note how the doors blend into the mural The side of the building portrays the Wyoming state flower - Indian Paintbrush, as well as the ever present sunflower.  It’s delightful to see such beautiful artwork in the community.

Timely Message

new mural on the Free Wall Laramie, WY June 2020 I spotted this beautiful, new mural on the Free Wall last week when I went downtown to photograph the additions to the COVID-19 mural.  The artist did an amazing job on this depiction on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dinosaur Discovery

Image
Dinosaur mural Laramie, WY August 2019 From Wikipedia : The fossil record of the US state of Wyoming spans from the Precambrian to recent deposits. There are a large number of different fossil sites spread throughout the state.  Wyoming is such a spectacular source of fossils that author Marian Murray noted in 1974 that "[e]ven today, it is the expected thing that any great museum will send its representatives to Wyoming as often as possible." Murray has also written that nearly every major vertebrate paleontologist in United States history has collected fossils in Wyoming.  Wyoming is a major source of dinosaur fossils. Wyoming's dinosaur fossils are curated by museums located all over the planet.

Community Awareness

Image
section of mural at First and Grand Laramie, WY August 2019 This mural is across the parking lot from the Gill Street fish mural . Matthew Shepard , a University of Wyoming student, who was beaten, tortured and left to die near Laramie in October 1998 left a lasting impression on the community. Since that tragic event, the community of Laramie has focused on public awareness and tolerance.

Gill Street - part IV

Image
Gill Street mural - eastern section Laramie, WY  Don't you love the grumpy fish! He's at the tail end of the mural; perhaps that's why he is so cranky.

Gill Street - part III

Image
Gill Street mural - northern end Laramie, WY Try to ignore the dumpsters, but enjoy the fish. . . fish with Pronghorn Antelope The grilled salmon may be a the very northern end of the mural, but the mural turns the corner. More Gill Street fish next week . . .

Gill Street Mural - part II

Image
large fish on the southern most end of Gill Street mural Laramie, WY August 2019  As I mentioned last week, the Gill Street mural is huge. This week, the photos depict the fish on the southern end. This image gives you some idea of the size of the mural.   More fish photos next week from the northern and eastern ends of the mural.

Gill Street Mural

Image
one segment of Gill Street Mural Laramie, WY August 2018 A large mural featuring fish is painted on the back of several Second Street buildings. The open alley in that section allows the viewer to get the full perspective of the mural, but viewing each fish closeup  is necessary to see more of the details and beauty of each fish. I'll share more of the mural in coming weeks.

Urban Forest Mural

Image
mural on the corner of Third and Custer Streets Laramie, WY October 2018 This large mural invites closer observation. Note the single tree on the far right of the second photo. I can only speculate about the artist's message behind this impressive mural.

School Murals

artwork on the side of Ashgrove Elementary School Riverton, WY September 2017 Three cheerful murals hang on the south side of Ashgrove Elementary school. The sunflowers in the foreground were planted by the students last spring. The seed heads should attract some birds or squirrels this winter. Do the schools in your area have gardens?
