ADVICE NEEDED, Thanksgiving, and other randomness

1.  Thanksgiving was at my house this year.  This was the first time my sister was at  my house.  It was nice to all be together to celebrate.  The food was delicious.  I brined the turkey for two days and then grilled it (yes, I said GRILLED) with a drip pan under it while frequently basing it with a delightful basting sauce.  It was a combination of two recipes and techniques.  Moist and tasty...

Lisa likes to sit and watch us be busy, so we spent a good portion of the day decorating for Christmas.  Patrick does all things tree.  I'm really glad he enjoys it.  The girls had fun "helping" too.

2.  ADVICE PLEASE...The above picture will probably be my parents' Christmas card picture this year.  I think it came out pretty well considering we had the camera on a tripod and no one making goofy faces to get the kids' attention.  We also got a good one of Patrick, the girls, and me.....greatly assisted by peek-a-boo playing grandparents.  I am considering turning it into a Christmas header....or should I save it to send in Christmas cards?  Speaking of which, should I send Christmas cards?  Last year I did an email with a slide show....just as good or lame?  Do you LOVE getting "real" cards in the mail or is it just as exciting to get a Christmas email (which sometimes contains more info and better pictures)?  I DO love getting mail, but I must admit, when I get a card that is just signed, "Love, John and Jane Doe" I think..."How nice that they remembered us....did they really just spend money on postage and a card to mail us that?"  Then there is the other extreme....the person who sends a three page single spaced letter detailing every hiccup their precious cherub had that year.  Kinda like the people who update facebook with "going to bed now."  ....but that's a whole other soap box.  What do you think?!?

3.  A Sunday Finest post....just to make Aunt Heidi smile.

As if this isn't cute enough....

They MATCH!!!!

Fun fact....I bought the skirt Camille is wearing for Adeline two years ago on ebay.  My friend, Nancy, had two of the SAME skirts which she gave me in case baby #3 was a girl so all THREE of them could match.  So fun!...but not meant to be.  I guess we'll just have to put baby boy in a red sweater vest or something....

I'm one of "those" people...

I have a confession to make...and I hate it...it's just killing my pride.  One pet peeve I have is when people don't write thank you cards.  I don't mean for every menial occasion, but for weddings, baby showers, birthdays, or when someone goes out of their way to do something special for you, I think a personal note is common courtesy.  Some people send mass produced cards that say, "thank you for coming to my wedding and thank you for the gift."  HORRIBLE!!!  If you can't take the time to write a simple thank you naming the gift the person so carefully thought to purchase for you (or were kind enough to get off your registry so it was something you actually wanted), then you don't deserve their kindness.  I realize it is the 21st century, and I am not so old school that I think you actually have to put ink to paper.  For most occasions, an email acknowledging their kindness will suffice.  But to do NOTHING, is selfish.

Now that I have been on my soapbox and made my position clear......I have become one of *those* people!!!  I really hate to admit this.  I had a list of thank you's to write after Adeline's 1st birthday (yes, I know that was the end of Feb!!!).  The list has been lost in the same vacuum where baby girl socks and pens disappear.  I was trying to get most of them done before we left for vacation.  The list had at least 10 names, and I think I only completed 4.  I can remember at least two more I need to write, but I KNOW there are more of you out there.  If you are one of the wonderful gift givers that I missed, PLEASE know that I am thankful for your thoughtfulness and generosity (not only am I one of "those" people, but I just offered one of those catch-all thank you's that is impersonal and reeks of selfishness...Ugh!).

The other day, one of my best friends Skyped me (you know who you are).  In the course of our conversation, she said, "I just want to make sure you got the package I sent."  OH...um....(I know I composed the thank you in my head...did I REALLY not send a card?).... double Ugh!!!  Of course I remember getting the package.  I thanked her profusely and admitted to my complete embarrassment.  She has known me for a VERY long time and is like a sister to me, so she has seen me make MUCH bigger mistakes and treat her with varying degrees of kindness, yet loves me in spite of myself.  She made me look her in the eyes and told me NOT to send a thank you card.

I composed it today and it will be in the mail tomorrow.....

Thanksgiving fun!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and we hope all of you did too. We were away from family but were able to call them, and see them (Skype really is amazing!). Here we are before our feast.

The Dragon Hill really is a beautiful hotel. We were surprised by how many people we knew who went there for the holiday. We got to know some of them much better, and we met some new friends. The dinner was quite good (with REAL mashed potatoes, which is one of my requirements for it to be a true holiday feast). In the evenings, we really did congregate in the hallway after the kids were in bed (sans pajamas).

Other highlights of this mini-vacation were a pedicure for Lynn, haircuts for Lynn and Patrick, and some exploring of Seoul. On Friday, we went with a group to the electronics market, where you can buy flowers (just kidding) cameras, TVs, etc. We think the discounts will be better after Christmas, so we did not buy anything there. On Saturday, we went to the Chosen, a store on the base managed by wives of the officers there. They get shipments from all over Asia of dresses, pottery, furniture, jewelry, art, linens, Tiffany lamps, etc. The last time I was there, I bought a rocking horse and a small purse for Adeline. This time, I bought a few jackets (75% off!!!) and some jewelry. I have my eyes on a globe where the countries are in different colors of stone/marble. Perhaps I will post pictures at some point. After lunch, we ventured on our own to two of the markets in Seoul, Insa-dong and Namdaemun. The first is a historic art district that reminded us of Soho. There were shops with pottery, art, tea, woodworking, and other gift items. Namdaemun is pure shopping chaos! It is an outdoor market with hundreds of stands and people everywhere. I bought a beautiful hand crocheted tablecloth. We had a lot of fun on our day of adventure, and Adeline did really well. I am SO thankful for Patrick's excellent sense of direction and ability to get around on any public transportation system.

When we woke up on Friday, after Thanksgiving, the hotel was decorated for....... Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy mail day!

On Monday, we had a VERY happy mail day....a FOUR packages in the mail kinda day!!!  Now, packages are not as unusual as in the US because we do a lot of shopping with on-line stores and ebay, but this was a GREAT day!  One of the packages was from my aunt Fay.  It was completely unexpected and had everything from holiday decorations to scrapbooking supplies to books for us and Adeline.  What a treat!  Thanks aunt Fay for blessing us in this way!

While I am giving thanks for cool packages, I need to give a shout out to my cousin Lee and his kids, Esther, Alex, and Emma, for the AMAZING shoo-fly pie we received in the mail a few weeks ago!  For those who don't know, it is made mostly from molasses and brown sugar so it doesn't spoil in the journey across the world.  It is a Lancaster County specialty and tastes like home.  I failed to take a picture (and I call myself a blogger!?!?!?), but you can click here to see our gift givers in action.

At the risk of forgetting someone, I am not going to list everyone else who has blessed us with snail mail and/or packages....but we truly do thank you.

We are so blessed.
