5 words meme

Last week I received 5 words from my blogging friend, Mari. It's all part of a meme, that you can do too, if you want to. Here's how it works. Mari got 5 words from another blogger and she did a post about the words she was given. She then offered to give 5 words to someone else. I thought it would be fun, so now I'm going to post on the five words she gave me. If you want to join in, tell me in the comments and I'll send you your own five words!

1. Daughters: Most of you know that I have two daughters, Adeline (2 1/2 yrs) and Camille (4 1/2 months). What you may not know, is that we struggled through infertility before conceiving Adeline. I don't share many personal things on this blog, but maybe I'll do a post on this some day. I thank God every day for the gift of my girls. Of course I would have been happy with a son, but I REALLY wanted a girl. Patrick can share his love of sports, skiing, snowboarding, fishing, golf, and reading (to name a few) with girls. However, my love for scrapbooking, tea parties, decorating, and shopping really are more suited to those of the female gender.

2. Korea: Some of my new readers may not know we spent a year in Korea with the air force. We really enjoyed our time there....certainly more than I expected to enjoy it. We met some amazing people, and we continue to stay in contact with them. I really liked my life there. There were so many activities and fun day trips with other moms. Plus, Patrick's schedule there offered us more family time than we will probably have throughout his career. It was great to have him home so much. We also did a lot of traveling (China, cruise from New Zealand to Australia, and Thailand, as well as many trips in Korea). Adeline has more stamps in her passport than most adults....too bad she won't remember any of it.

3. Music: I play the flute, piano, and guitar. Well, let me clarify that.... I play the flute. I took piano lessons for 9 years, but I haven't read music in FOREVER, and now I am only comfortable playing worship music with chords. I started teaching myself to play the guitar in college (because my roommate Sarah decided to learn and bought a guitar). Patrick came with a guitar when I married him (although he doesn't play), and I have gone through periods where I've tried to improve my playing. I haven't played in almost two years, which means no callouses, and an ability to play VERY limited songs with VERY easy chords. So, I guess I really don't play the guitar. Although I love music and love playing instruments, I don't sing. I mean, I sing in church, when I put my daughter to bed, and occasionally when the mood strikes, but that's it. It's not pretty my friends. Patrick, on the other hand, has an amazing voice. I guess that is another reason we make a great team. Now if I could just get him to sing for me more often...

4. Cooking: My mom is a wonderful cook, but a stifled one. My father is a picky eater, so she is very limited on the types of foods she can make for our family. My time in Pakistan (I really do need to do a post about that) taught me to eat things I never would have put in my mouth...and learn to enjoy them. I knew how to cook when I got married, but I have learned so much more, and experimented with ingredients I never knew existed over the past 8 years. I love to try new recipes. I only keep the ones we LOVE. I am blessed with a husband who will eat anything I make and enjoys the variety.
5. Military: Patrick was working at Johns Hopkins and applying to medical schools when I met him. He was trying to decide if he wanted to take a military scholarship to pay for his education. I remember we hadn't been dating long, so I didn't feel I should have a voice in such a major life decision, while at the same time realizing that if things went well, this decision could have a major impact on MY life. He took the scholarship. We haven't had the "typical" military life. We moved an hour south for residency (at Andrews AFB), volunteered to go to Korea for a year, and then returned to Andrews where he is currently stationed. We both have family and childhood friends within 2 hours of our home. Patrick has the option of finishing his career here. We'll see...

Senior Year meme

I was tagged on Facebook (ages ago) for this meme about my senior year of high school. I'm not much into tagging people these days, but if you want to play along, great! And, what would a high school post be without some humiliating pictures? I scanned these from my scrapbook for your entertainment. You can click on them to enlarge and get the full value of their humor. I graduated in 1995.....

1. Did you date someone from your school?
Yes

2. Did you marry someone from your high school?
No

3. Did you car pool to School?
Yep, various people, various years. I drove my senior year, and sometimes picked up a friend "in town" on my way.

4. What kind of car did you have?
A rather unattractive olive green Oldsmobile.

5. What kind of car do you have now?
2005 Honda Accord and a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder

6. Its Friday night...where are you in HS?
I grew up in a football town, so if there was a game, that was the only place to be. Other times of the year, I would have been hanging out with my friends. We usually congregated at my house or my friend, Corby's house.

7. It is Friday night...where are you now?
At NIGHT I'm at home because we've got two little girls who need to go to bed, but in the evening I may be out to dinner, enjoying time with friends, or having an at home date with my hubby.

8. What kind of job did you have in high school?
I worked at "Little People Daycare Center." I ran their after school program during the year and their camp program in the summer. It was nice because it was just for a few hours after school, but I didn't have to work nights or weekends. My social life was quite important....

9. What kind of job do you do now?
Full time mommy and part time occupational therapist.

10. Were you a party animal?
Depends how you define party animal....no drinking, no smoking, no drugs. However, we were out late a lot and had a lot of parties. There were at least 30 of us in my public high school that were all Christians and had good, clean fun. We were together A LOT.

12. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?
Concert band (played the flute). No desire to be in marching band.

13. Were you a nerd?
no. I took academic classes, but it wasn't nerdy to be smart in my school.

14. Did you get suspended or expelled?
No

15. Can you sing the fight song?
If someone can start me off...maybe.

16. Who was/were your favorite teacher(s)?
Miss Hoover (Spanish), Mr Kensinger (Chemistry), and Mr Kreider (History)

17. Where did you sit during lunch?
Cafeteria...with my girlfriends.

18. What was your school's full name?
Manheim Central Senior High School

20. What was your school mascot?
a Baron

21. If you could go back and do it again, would you?
I'm happy with my life now, and I was happy with my life then. I am still close to many of my friends from high school and have many happy memories from those years.

22. Did you have fun at Prom?
A blast! And why not share a few pictures from that too...
I LOVED that dress. Especially the back. And my hair.....it's in a banana clip, and yes, I loved that too. And yes, Jen and Jen, I'm taking you down with me. ;o)

23. Do you talk to the person you went to Prom with?
no...we're facebook friends though and if I run into him, we are friendly.

24. Are you planning on going to your next reunion?
Well, I planned the last one (with some friends). If one gets planned, I will go.

25. Do you still talk to people from school?
Yes....many.

Alphabet meme

My blogging friend, Mari, had this meme on her blog, and I thought it would be a fun (and easy) way to complete the "25 random things about me" meme that I've been tagged to complete a million times on Facebook.  And since there are 26 letters in the alphabet...you get a bonus.  To see more random things about me, see this post.

A is for your age: 31
B is for your burger of choice: half pound, done medium, with cheese, ketchup, and occasionally bacon (yeah, I'm a real health nut).
C is for the car that you drive: Honda Accord
D is for dog's name: I love visiting others' dogs, but we're not really animals in the house kind of people.
E is for an essential item you use each day:  right now...my body pillow (only a few more weeks!).
F is for your favorite television show: Lost or The Office
G is for favorite game: Ping pong (if that counts).  Right now, Patrick and I are into Blokus (I never win, which usually means I quickly hate the game, but for some reason, I like this one.  Our scores are usually only a few points apart).  Favorite Facebook game is Scramble (Hi Kristen!).
H is for hometown: Manheim, PA
I is for instruments played:  Flute, piano, and a little guitar
J is for favorite juice: white grape
K is for what you'd like to kick: mean people
L is for last restaurant you dined at: Pomo Grille
M is for your favorite muppet: The critics
N is for number of piercings you have: just one in each ear (and that's all I want)

P is for people you were with today: Patrick, Adeline, my parents, and my parents' friends (Mike and Kay Fisher).
Q is for what you do in quiet times: SLEEP, read, pray, blog, scrapbook.
R is for regrets: No big ones...I've learned from most of the mistakes I've made...not sure why I have to make some of them several times to get the lesson.
S is for status: not sure what they're going for here...I have been happily married for 7 1/2 years.
T is for time you woke up today: 7 am
U is for what you consider unique: people's taste (in clothes, food, decor, beliefs, etc).  I love to "people watch."
V is for favorite vegetable: I really love most of them.  Potatoes (although I know that doesn't REALLY count), edemame, snap peas, carrots, mixed vegetables (the organic ones from Costco) with Velveeta cheese.
W is for your worst habit: sarcasm
X is for x-rays you have had: dental, my leg (when I broke it at age 16)
Y is for yummy food you ate today: My homemade blueberry pie with ice cream.
Z is for zodiac sign: I don't believe in this stuff or even know what any of the signs mean.  I only found out what mine was after college at my first job.  I'm a Virgo.  I have no idea what Patrick or Adeline's signs are....and I don't care.

My First Born...

It seems tags are no longer limited to the blogging world.  The facebook world is on a tagging frenzy!  I've been tagged for several meme's, and since I've been in a bit of a blogging rut, I thought this would be a good time to play along.

The rules for this one are to answer the questions based on your first born...

1. WAS YOUR FIRST PREGNANCY PLANNED? Yes, but not in my timing. We struggled with infertility for what felt like forever. God's timing is perfect though.

2. WERE YOU MARRIED AT THE TIME? Yes

3. WHAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS? Thankfulness, elation, pure joy

4. HOW OLD WERE YOU? 28 when I found out, 29 when I gave birth

5. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT? Had a feeling...took a test.

6. WHO DID YOU TELL FIRST? Patrick (I surprised him at work. I brought him dinner at the hospital while he was on call and asked him to come to the car to help me carry it inside. I gave him a card that talked about what a great guy he is...blah, blah...and I ended it with "and I know you'll make a great..." Then he opened a present and found the + test!).

7. DID YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE SEX? Nope...I LOVE surprises.

8. DUE DATE? March 5, 2007

9. DID YOU HAVE MORNING SICKNESS? Very rarely. I had to snack a lot and take my time eating some meals, but I only threw up a few times.

10. WHAT DID YOU CRAVE? Nothing throughout, but occasionally... Chic Fil A nuggets, anything with Velveeta, french fries (with lots of ketchup), and vegetables.

11. WHO/WHAT IRRITATED YOU THE MOST? Having to wake up to roll over, people telling me I looked like I was ready to pop....are you carrying two....and other such insensitive nonsense.

12. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CHILD'S SEX? my sweet baby girl

13. DID YOU WISH YOU HAD THE OPPOSITE SEX OF WHAT YOU WERE GETTING? Nope...I REALLY wanted a girl.

14. HOW MANY POUNDS DID YOU GAIN THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY? I don't know if it's good or bad that I don't know the answer to this. I know I stayed in the normal range. I don't really care much about what I weigh. I care about how my clothes fit.

15. DID YOU HAVE A BABY SHOWER? Yes. (work, friends and family in PA, friends and family in MD, church, and residents in Patrick's class)....yeah, we were blessed.

16. WAS IT A SURPRISE OR DID YOU KNOW? I knew about all of them.

17. DID YOU HAVE ANY COMPLICATIONS DURING YOUR PREGNANCY? We had to have a special ultrasound because at her 20 week one they thought her stomach was "slightly enlarged." If you saw how this girl can eat...you would understand. ;o) Other than that, it was pretty normal.

18. WHERE DID YOU GIVE BIRTH? Andrews Air Force Base

19. HOW MANY HOURS WERE YOU IN LABOR? 24 hours!!! (3am to 3am)

20. WHO DROVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL? Patrick

21. WHO WATCHED YOU GIVE BIRTH? Patrick, my mom, my family practice doc that delivered Adeline, the best nurse in the world, and various other medical people.

22. WAS IT NATURAL OR C-SECTION? Natural

23. DID YOU TAKE MEDICINE TO EASE THE PAIN? Nope! I highly recommend the Bradley Method.

24. HOW MUCH DID YOUR CHILD WEIGH? 7lbs. 11oz.

25. WHEN WAS YOUR CHILD ACTUALLY BORN? February 27, 2007

26. WHAT DID YOU NAME HIM/HER? Adeline Kate

27. HOW OLD IS YOUR FIRST BORN TODAY? 23 1/2 months...she'll be 2 in two weeks!

I had a cute picture to add here, but blogger is not cooperating with picture loading tonight.

6 Unimportant Things

Leigh Ann tagged me for this meme....here are the rules:

1. Link back to the person that tagged you.
2. Post these rules on your blog.
3. Share six unimportant things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your entry.

You won't learn much about me from these, but hopefully you'll be mildly entertained...

1 - I rarely chew gum.

2 - I am in my PJ's.

3 - I need to fold the towels that just finished in my dryer...but probably won't until tomorrow.

4 - I usually sleep on my side.

5 - I've never had a cavity.

6 - I have large membranes in my nose and would sometimes have nosebleeds for over 2 hours and have to go to a doctor to get them stopped when I was a kid.  Suffice it to say, that problem has been treated.  I'll spare you the details.  (Heidi...I know you're laughing....no need to tell any stories).  ;o)

Tagging 6 people......

I learned from Just Mom that it is possible to break these rules....I KNOW...Who knew?!?!
So, I am going to forgo tagging anyone this time since I have been doing a good bit of tagging lately.  If you want to play along, I would love to read your answers!

3 places I would rather be right now: Baskin Robbins, anywhere on vacation (have you figured out yet that this is something I love?), sometimes "home" (but I am really content here in Korea for a few more months).

Another meme...

Mary at notbefore7 tagged me for this meme.

What was I doing 10 years ago....

It would have been the April of 1998. I was in my junior year of college at Towson University studying occupational therapy, living in an apartment with Sarah and Lauren.

5 things on my to-do list today...

1.  Go through the rest of Adeline's spring/summer clothes and wash them.
2.  File the recipes I have tried lately that are "make again's" and finish my grocery list.
3.  Work on Adeline's scrapbook...it's ALMOST done!!!
4.  Finish the ironing
5.  Catch up on your blogs and leave comments.

5 snacks I enjoy...

1.  Ice Cream
2.  Almost any kind of fruit
3.  String cheese
4.  Pretzels (Snyders Splits are my favorite (can't get them here) or Snaps (can get them here!)).
5.  I also tend to munch on leftovers if there is something I really like (like mashed potatoes...without heating them).

5 things I would do if I were a billionaire...
First I have to say...odds aren't good since I don't play the lottery and I don't know anyone who is going to leave me that kind of cash...but, God can do anything!

1.  Tithe and give lots of extra away to our favorite charities...pray about new charities the Lord would like us to support.
2.  Travel (yeah, I know I'm already doing that quite a bit) and pay for a friend or family member to come along to watch Adeline so Patrick and I can go out a few evenings (any volunteers?).
3.  Fly all of my readers out for a big old blogging party!  Woo Hoo!!!  How do you like me now?
4.  Pay off our house (well, maybe pay off a DIFFERENT slightly larger house), save for Adeline's college fund, and save some for retirement.
5.  Try not to become a totally different person than I am now...I want my kid(s) to know that money belongs to God and doesn't buy happiness.

5 bad habits...

1.  Taking it personally when I am left out of an outing.
2.  Eating when I'm not hungry just because it is there.
3.  Letting the gas tank in the car get lower than it should.
4.  Thinking I can get just one more thing done before I need to leave...I can't...and then...
5.  I'm late.

5 places I've lived...

1.  Pennsylvania
2.  Maryland (college dorm, college apartment, apartment in Baltimore, townhouse with my husband)
3.   Pakistan (did an internship there for 2 months)
4.  Hong Kong (lived with my cousin and his wife for 1 month)
5.  Korea

5 jobs I've had...

1.  Daycare center worker.
2.  Caregiver in a nursing home.
3.  In college I worked at Sweet Sensations (the frozen yogurt and coffee/cappuccino stand in the student union) and then worked as a nanny for the VP of the University....GREAT job I'll have to post about it sometime.
4.  Occupational Therapist (I worked in a hospital with general rehab and brain injury patients, then acute care, then nursing homes, did about a year in management, and then went back to treating patients while I was pregnant).
5.  Mommy....I thank God for this job every day.

TAG! Now YOU are it...
disclaimer...I picked each of you because I thought you would like to be picked and would enjoy participating.  If I am wrong, or you don't have time, no pressure...
1.  Krista
2.  Nancy
3.  Amanda
4.  Just Mom (only because I know you've already been tagged, and I think your answers will be hilarious!)
5.  Shara

Book meme

My friend, Mary, tagged me for this book meme.

The rules:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages.)
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

I didn't have any books around me when I found out I was tagged for this meme. I looked around, and I found one beside my couch that I started reading several months ago and haven't picked up in quite a while. Anyway, here goes...

The book is The Seven Pillars of Health by Don Colbert, MD.

Sentences 5-7 on pg 123 are...

"Since she was only thirty years old and appeared to be in good physical shape, I had failed to ask her about exercise on the first visit. However, seeing that her condition was unchanged, I questioned her and learned that she did not exercise. I had her start jumping on a rebounder first thing in the morning for only five minutes, gradually increasing her time as she became conditioned, and told her to continue with my previous recommendations."

For some background, this patient came with complaints of severe headaches, fatigue, acne breakouts, and severe constipation. She had a bowel movement only once a week since her teens. Of course, this little bit of exercise solved ALL of these problems. mmm hmm....

If all it took was 5 min a day of jumping on a rebounder, miss tons-of-complaints clearly does not have little ones in her house to chase all day long.

I am going to tag Nancy, Janelle (who just added a shelfari bookshelf to her blog), Angela (who told me about shelfari), and anyone else who wants to play along....just let me know if you do!
