Works for me Wednesday

Coffee filters.......AMAZING devices.  I read an article on this a long time ago in Simple & Delicious magazine.  I don't subscribe to this, so I don't really know where I got the magazine, but my mom recently reminded me of some of their uses.

*They are great, individual, disposable bowls for snacks (popcorn, dry cereal, grapes, pretzels, etc).  Kids can grab the sides of them easier than paper towels to carry snacks to a desired (and allowed) location.
*Before handing ice cream bars or popsicles to kids, slide each wooden stick through a coffee filter to help prevent drips on little fingers (the messy face is a whole new problem).
*Place them over a bowl or plate to prevent splatters in the microwave.
*Use them as disposable plates for sandwiches or veggies for trips in the car.
*Oh, and you can also use them to brew coffee.  ;o)

They are cheap and come in large quantities....a dollar for several hundred at the dollar store.  Plus, they don't tear easily when wet (for snacks like grapes or fresh veggies) like paper towels do.  I now keep a stack of them on my counter.  Coffee filters work for me!

$30 well spent

Since I am finally wearing shoes that allow you to see my pretty piggies, I cashed in on my Christmas pedicure from my father.  While there, I discovered the greatest invention since disposable diapers.
Enter....the "Swivel Sweeper"......as seen on TV(so you KNOW it works).  ;o)

At the salon, they said they were skeptical, but they found that it really works both on hard floors and on carpet....even for hair (they do hair too).  This little beauty comes with a rechargeable battery.  Just plug it into the wall.  That means no cord and easy storage.  The four revolving bristles (one on each side) pick up your mess.  I thought, "look out Cheerios, you may have met your match!"  And then, are you ready for this?.......there is a trap door.  You squeeze two little tabs on top to release the contents into your trash.  You never touch the mess.  No bags.  It picks up things as large as shredded wheat cereal and as small as craft beads or crumbs.  IT WORKS!  I'm told they are available at places such as Target and Walmart.  I bought mine on ebay.  If you have small children, this will decrease your post meal/post snack/post craft clean up time by leaps and bounds.  If you have medium sized children, I imagine it will still be your best friend.......I don't have any of those yet.  And, if you have accident prone adults in your home, again, you need this.

The Swivel Sweeper works for me!

Advice anyone?

I just got a notice that my "promotional rate" is finished for my phone/internet plan with Verizon.  I thought, surely if I call, I will be able to get the same rate.  No.  Anyhow, I think the amount Patrick and I pay for a basic phone plan and internet service (around $90) is ridiculous!  We don't have cable, so we do the bundle package for phone and internet with Verizon.  I know I could find a cheaper phone plan (ie Vontage), so I asked how much it would be to just get internet from them.  The difference was an astounding $2.  Yes, TWO DOLLARS!  Even the sales lady was surprised.  SO, now I find myself wondering if there is a cheaper option for fast internet.  As much as we LOVE our iPhones, we are also debating if this is an extravagance we should eliminate.  What do you use for your phone, cell phones, and internet providers?  Any advice?

Gotta have...

Do you know about these?  They are silicone reusable muffin cups, and they.are.FABULOUS! ....and by fabulous, I mean you should get some.  They are worth it just to NOT lose half your cupcake/muffin taking off a paper liner.  Did I mention that they are reusable?  You don't even need to use a muffin pan.  You can put them on a tray or just put them directly in the oven.  That means, I can make Jiffy cornbread muffins while only using 6 of them instead of a whole muffin pan and have MUCH less of a mess to clean.  It also means you can freeze muffin batter in them and then....are you ready for this?....pop one in the toaster oven in the morning for a fresh baked muffin!  Add these to your birthday/Christmas/Mother's day/just because I'm nice list.  Unless you never make cupcakes or muffins....then don't.  You can find lots of choices for them here, but you can buy them at any kitchen store.

Cookies for Africa

I'm putting in a plug today for a wonderful ministry.  Do you see how adorable this cookie is?!?  It was served at a baby shower I recently attended.  It is as delicious as it is cute, and it took me a week to decide that it was okay to eat something that adorable.  They were made by Becky, who started this ministry to support Child Alive, fighting malaria and meningitis in Africa.  You can read more about the mission, her family's desire to adopt, and see more of her beautiful creations here at www.CookiesForAfrica.com.  These cookies aren't cheap, but most of your purchase/donation is tax deductible.  She is incredibly talented.

As an added bonus, when I clicked on her site this morning, she is currently doing a giveaway!!!  Check it out (and tell her you found out about her from here).

Shoveling tip for Snownami 2010

This snow is impressive.  Three feet over the weekend.  And then.....let's just add another foot today for good measure.  Seriously!  I'm not complaining.  Really, I'm not.  I've had my husband home all week, and we've tackled some projects that have been on my list for MONTHS!

The snowman in the previous post was done about a month ago.  This slightly less impressive one was done by Adeline and me last Wednesday when we had a perfect few inches that was slowly melting in the 40 degree weather...making it perfect snowman snow.  Note that I had a screaming 9 month old bundled up in her stroller that was none too happy about being outside.  Is Adeline out enjoying the snow now?  no.  A girl who is 3 1/2 feet tall does not enjoy playing in three feet of snow.  Breathing is ya know, important.  We did attempt sledding with our alwaysupforanadventure friends, the Saladas.  Patrick prepped the sledding hill.  Adeline went down once (after daddy carried her from the door to the top of the hill).  She smiled the whole time.  The next time down, she got snow in her face and she was "all done snow."

I know, Patrick looks impressive with this "man tool" to clear the snow, but bless his heart, he did most of it the old fashioned way.  This snow blower is our neighbors, and the tire was flat (a problem before we borrowed it) after a few laps.  Honey, you rock!

Anyway, on to the tip...
My father (who has logged many hours plowing this marvel of global warming) called with this tip.  Don't shovel the end of your driveway until you absolutely have to.  When the plows come along, if you've created an opening, all the snow they're pushing from the street will pile into your cleared driveway.  If you leave a ridge, most of the snow will continue past.  Brilliant.  Happy shoveling!

Up for discussion...

1.  Anyone read the Twilight series?  Is it really worth all the hype?  I have had NO desire to read them...vampires?  really?  However, they seem to keep popping up on blogs, in conversations, etc.  So, I want to know.  Are you hooked?  Are they cheesy?  pg rated?  well written?  worth my time?

2.    Those of you who know me, know I am an avid scrapbooker.  I do one large 12x15 album of our family events each year (ending with the Christmas card pictures you send us).  I also do other books for special events (a special vacation, baby books for the girls, etc).  I am strongly considering going to mostly digital scrapbooks.  I love the hands-on of traditional scrapbooking, but I think the digital version will be easier to store, easier to take places to show, cheaper, and faster. I plan to continue with traditional scrapbooks for the girls with events that are specific to them.  I want to be able to add mementoes to them and write in my own handwriting.   So, my question is....Have you tried any sites for digital scrapbooking that you would recommend?  I am looking for something with more options than say, Shutterfly.  I've made albums there, and they are fine.  I am looking for something where I am not locked into set templates.  I want to add as many pictures as I want, where I want them, in the sizes I want.  I want to put text where I want it, etc.  Basicly, I want the freedom to scrapbook like I always have, I just want it to be digital.  Any suggestions?  Has anyone tried the digital albums with Creative Memories?

A Giveaway!!!

***Update*** Congratulations, Mari, YOU WON!
I am so excited to share a giveaway with you to start out your new year.  I have shared before that I love the daily chore schedule at motivated moms (dot) com.  I have been using it for several years, and it is such a help to me in organizing and keeping my house at a respectable level of clean.....most of the time.  Chores are broken into things that are done daily (take meds, make your bed (hee hee), read to your kids) and then other chores listed each day (clean all the glass in the family room, clean the microwave, clean one shelf in the refrigerator).  It only costs $8 and she emails the calendar to you in a pdf file.

Deann from motivated moms has donated a free chore schedule to one of my readers!  Just click on her site and see which schedule you would like ( two weeks each on 1/2 sheet, one week on a full sheet, with daily scriptures added, etc).  Leave me a comment by Saturday at 5pm to enter.  Also, Deann is offering a $1 discount if you use the code, "NEWYEAR" before Jan 14.

What I Call Pretty

You may remember this post, where I showed you Adeline's quilt...one of my favorite souvenirs from our time in Korea. I bought extra fabric to match her quilt with the intention of having curtains, or a window seat, or SOMETHING made with it. Fabric was cheap there, and I figured I would never see it again, so if I didn't buy it then, I would miss my chance. There is only one problem with my idea....I don't sew. However, my friend, Missy, does. I mean, she really does. She is amazing. She made these curtains for Adeline's room, and I LOVE them. They are so girly and pretty. She even lined them with a blackout fabric (which would have been nice when it was 9pm and still not dark). They really help to pull the room together.

So, you might be thinking, "I wish I had a friend who could sew and was creative and had an exceptional attention to detail." Well, friends, this is your lucky day, because Missy has recently launched her Etsy business. It is called "What I Call Pretty." Check out her site here. Trust me, you will be impressed with the quality. And in case it is important to you, she's a really great person too.

Those #$J#^@&JG# Squirrels

Late fall/early winter, we bought a bird feeder for our deck.  We thought it would be nice to watch the birds, through the sliding glass doors, while sitting at our kitchen table.  People warned us about the squirrels.  They came.  First, they were entertaining.  I mean, positions like this warrant a culinary reward.  Now, months later, I want to shoot a rubber band right in this guys belly....or a little lower, ahem.
(and no, this Christmas bulb is no longer hanging on my deck)

The smarter ones cling to it like this...

THIS is the look and sound we were going for....
We've decided the joy of bird watching (and hearing our toddler squeal with joy whenever she sees a red cardinal) outweighs the negative side effect of having to fill the feeder about once every 5-7 days.  I have ideas of what *I* would like to do to the overpopulation of squirrels, but my humane, law abiding husband does not agree.  So, I decided we need a super soaker.  I know it will not solve the problem, but it sure would make me feel better than having nothing to thwart their plans than banging and stomping....which works for about 30 seconds.  Any advice?

Cleaning up

Since I just printed out my new chore list for 2009, I thought I would recycle part of a post and give a plug for this great resource I found.  I discovered this site at the end of 2007, and I must say I enjoyed using it throughout 2008.  So much so that I bought the calendar again for 2009.  The site is...

Here is what I wrote about it in 2007...

"This site offers a calendar to help with organizing your cleaning schedule. It is PERFECT for a list lover like me. It breaks down tasks into chores that need to be done every day (like making the bed, feeding the pets, washing the dishes), and then adds a few other tasks to be tackled each day. If you follow the schedule, your house will stay pretty clean without becoming overwhelming. Tasks include things like cleaning out the microwave, changing your kitchen towels, paying the bills, changing the filter in your heater, dusting the master bedroom, or clipping your children's nails. It costs $8 to download, and you can get it with or without a daily scripture reading to read through the Bible in a year. I LOVE to be able to check things off a list, and this helps make organizing a household seem less daunting when it is broken down. I was VERY excited about this find and hope you will check out the site and perhaps benefit from it as well."

I wrote that before using it, and I must say, most days the tasks take less than 30 min.  It helps me to feel like my house has some semblance of clean without needing to dedicate an entire Saturday to cleaning, and it reminds me of places I may forget need attention at times (aka cleaning all the doorknobs in the house or cleaning the computer screen and mouse).  It works for me, so I thought I would share the tip!

Web Site

Well, folks, it's up and running.  To see Joseph's (did I mention that I love him...)web site, click here.  He only shows a few examples of his work, but they are all AMAZING!  He does show how he combines pictures to create one portrait.  If you give him some business, please be sure to post both the picture you sent him and the incredible art he creates (or non-bloggers, email me!).

When you want parenting advice...

...blog about it!

rubber duck Pictures, Images and Photos
I just know one of you has the perfect solution for me.  We are blessed with a spare bathroom...which means Adeline has a tub all to herself, and I can leave her bath toys in the bottom of the tub to dry.  It is a wonderful luxury to not have to clean them up every night.  However, some of them have a nice little scum forming on them, which is not ideal for the environment where you want to clean your child.  Does anyone have a way to keep those bath toys slime proof?  What solution do you use to clean your bath toys?  I am looking for a soak them in a solution of _________ while the grime dissolves into the universe type of answer and not one that actually requires the use of elbow grease for me to wash each toy.  Bleach seems a bit harsh.  I've seen the toy holders where you can scoop up the toys and hang them to dry, but I don't understand how having them piled in a heap will help the drying situation more than leaving them in the bottom of the tub (btw, I do make sure the cup-type-toys are emptied of any standing water).  Help!!!

suggestions anyone?

There are a lot of moms with a lot of experience out there, so HELP!  Adeline LOVES music, and I want to get her some kid CDs for her fast approaching first birthday.  I loved Psalty's Kid's Praise music when I was growing up (mom, do you still have any of that?).  I am looking for both Christian stuff and educational stuff.  If I have a variety, I think it will help me go less nuts listening to it all day.  So, what are your favorites?  What should I avoid for the sake of my sanity?

I Won!!!

I won this book during the Fall Y'All Bloggy Giveaway!  For those who don't know what this is, I will be sure to participate in the next giveaway and give you more details then.  Basically, several (I mean like 600!!!) bloggers all link to one site with giveaways.  They could give away anything from lotion to books to a gift card.  Some people used it as a way to promote their on-line business, some used it as a way to get more "traffic" to their blogs, and some just wanted to join the party!  I am just so excited to have won that I wanted to share the news.  Isn't the title of this book too cute?  I will let you know what I think of it after I've read it.

It was a lot of fun to peruse these sites.  I found  a lot of great new products, and in one blog I found a great tip that I thought I would share with you.  You can find it at www.motivatedmoms.com
