Harrisonburg Bricks

I'm just back from my son's graduation. We are so proud of him and surprised to find out that he graduated Magna Cum Laude!

It's been a whirlwind of a weekend...celebrating and then packing up our Hundai with college stuff along with three adults.

Last night, we ate at a Harrisonburg burger joint. Burgers are high on my son's and husband's list of favorite foods (maybe at the top). We'd heard that Jack Brown's had good burgers. Well, husband and son have become burger connoisseurs over the years. These were not burgers to write home about.

However, being seated outside, I gazed across the parking lot and couldn't help but notice a wall of amazing brick. Right after dinner, I headed over to take a few photos.

I admit to playing around with the contrast and cropping...just for fun!

Color Sampler

Yesterday, I decided to sit down and sew together a number of samples for my new Just Gelatin class. I then sorted through and picked out samples for some of my other upcoming classes: Latin American Influences and Inspired by Nature.

I find it fun to lay the samples out next to each other...so much color!

Today, I drove on over to G Street Fabrics with the various samples so that they could get them up in the display cases to advertise the classes.

I've been working on straightening up the studio a bit...organizing class samples...and getting ready for my son's return.

My son, Aaron, is graduating from college on Saturday! Can't believe four years have gone by. We will be negotiating the studio space...stay tuned!

Buckaroo Dad

This week I'm in Savannah, Georgia visiting with my parents for Passover, but also to see how things are going with them.

Over the years, my parents have collected my art and craft work. When I visit, it is like taking a walk through my artistic history.

Today, I thought I'd focus on one piece I created about 23 years ago. I remember working on it quite clearly as I was also pregnant with my son Aaron. This piece, called Buckaroo Dad, was a gift to my father for his 60th birthday.

Growing up, I spent about 2 weeks of every summer on Cape Cod. I have so many fond memories of this very special place. Both my brother and father have July birthdays so we would always have the Big Birthday Bash up at the Cape with steamers (clams), mussels, lobsters and steak.

Hand painted and stitched details of Dad's portrait.

The image for this piece is from a treasured iconic photograph of my Dad. My grandmother used to have it standing up on one of the side tables in the living room of her apartment. The photograph was a cut-out mounted to wood of my Dad in his favorite cowboy outfit. I love this photograph and after my grandmother died, I inherited it. It now stands on a little side table in my living room.

More details...of those furry chaps!

I'd wanted to take this image and turn it into a stitchery for a while. My Dad's 60th seemed the perfect opportunity. I remember that I didn't have it finished for the actual celebration at the Cape. But, I wrapped it up with a promise to finish it. I managed to get it done before the next big gift for my Dad--his first grandchild!

This stitched portrait now hangs in my parent's kitchen where it greets me on every visit.

My Dad's smiling face..a memory of happier times.

Mending

Tomorrow, my son, Aaron is off to start his senior year at college. Where have the years gone? These college years have flown by...

Aaron's favorite cargo shorts are a bit in tatters.

I agreed to do a little mending...

Somehow, it seemed the motherly thing to do.

I'm going to miss having him around.
