Searching for Roy G Biv III: White Update #6

Exterior of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE)

This month, we continue beyond the rainbow once again, with WHITE.

I happen to be in Charleston, South Carolina so lots of local southern WHITE for me this month.

WHITE appears in a lot of the architecture and architectural details in this quaint but bustling city.

Looking up there was also WHITE!

Roy Reminder: White

Here is your monthly reminder that it's time, once again, to continue on the search beyond the colors of the rainbow! The color this month is WHITE and this Thursday, October 16th, is the time to post up to five WHITE photos on your blog. Leave a comment here or on Jennifer Coyne Qudeen's blog and we will link to your post. Look for updates through Saturday, October 18th.

I'll be searching for some of my WHITE down in Charleston, South Carolina. My hubby and I are finally getting to see that city after having to cancel our trip last year.

The photo above is from our last trip together to Staunton, Virginia. Now that was a lovely town!

I've been saving these orchid blossoms.

They are a whispery white.

Mending Redux and "Seed" Fabric

This evening my son headed back for his last semester of college. It is very hard for me to believe this! How is it possible that four years could go by so quickly?

Last night, he asked if I could do some mending again of his favorite cargo shorts. So today I was patching over patches! I happened to find a piece of salted fabric I'd created with browns and blacks that seemed to blend well with the camouflage fabric in the shorts. These shorts are evolving into an art piece! Eventually, I will have to steal them away and really go at it with the stitching!

Today, I also had some correspondence with Karen Anne Glick. If you don't know of her or her work, she is a very creative quilt artist who has challenged herself to make a small quilt a day. These pieces are very spontaneous and are always accompanied by a short poem or Haiku. They are wonderful visual surprises!

Her quilt today featured pieces of the White Challenge fabric she won from me for playing along in the Searching for Roy G Biv Challenge.

Here is the block I used to create the fabric. It is made of pieces of rolled gift wrap glued to corrugated cardboard.

It was a surprising block and after printing with it, I was reminded of pumpkin seeds. Karen Anne was reminded of sunflower seeds and of a special porcelain sunflower seed she received as a gift. The seed is from an amazing art installation by Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei. There is a marvelous video about the installation on Karen's blog today.

That's all for now. My eyes are a bit tired from all the hand stitching I've done over the last few days. Time to relax and get reused to my empty nest.

Day 23: Winner of White Challenge Fabric

The color WHITE was quite popular! Between Jennifer and myself, I was able to put 11 names into the hat this month for the WHITE Challenge Fabric.

Congratulations to Karen Anne !

Next month, it looks like we will be doing Black & White combos. Post your B&W photos on your blog on the third Thursday of next month. I'm sure to have another Challenge fabric to offer next month...just to entice you!

Day 22:: Pam's Gift

Well, it is December 22 and the world has not yet come to an end.

Last night, while preparing for my trip to New Jersey, I suddenly realized that I hadn't yet opened up the package from my wonderful friend and fellow fiber artist, Pam S.

Every year, Pam and I buy small cups or bowls for each other. My collection grows every year and I cherish every piece I receive from Pam. This year is no exception, as you can see!

I love this beautiful WHITE cup with the subtle red stripes!

I'll be picking names from the hat tomorrow for the Challenge fabric.

Day 3: Wrapping with White

Last night, after spending hours looking at gift books on Amazon, I finally made my way back down to the studio.

I unwrapped all the pieces of pottery I purchased on Friday and set them out on my printing table. I then started measuring and cutting squares of white cotton.

My plan...to paint and print some Furoshiki cloths for wrapping up these beautiful pieces of pottery. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, Furoshiki is the Japanese art of using squares of fabric to wrap things. You may want to take a look at the November 24 Issue of Julie B Booth Surface Design News, along with the December 1 Extra Issue for more information, including a few recommended books.

Before getting to the painting and printing, I wanted to be sure I cut the correct square sizes for the various bowls and teacups. After a little trial and error, I worked out the sizes for three gifts.

As I was shooting the photos for this post, I had a duh moment! Here I was taking some perfect shots for this month's extension of the Searching for Roy G Biv Challenge! Yes, Jennifer and I are extending the fun and on the third Thursday of this month (December 20) we encourage those of you who are playing along to post photos of White. I'll be saving some shots of these wraps for that date.
