OMG! It's time for Roy again!

Rainbow-colored Indian embroidery with some little shisha mirrors. I plan to include attaching small objects with stitchery as part of my upcoming class, Patching, Stitching, Weaving: Creating Healing Cloth

Time is a funny thing...it slows down...it speeds up...

I'm still slogging through book edits. It appears that I like to write....too much! I'm hoping that enough words are now cut, though I don't believe so. I'd just hate to cut more projects! And this was supposed to be done by Dec 15th (ha!)!

We are speedily moving through February, despite the recent snow storm. We totaled out at about 14". Miraculously, us Northern Virginians seem to getting the knack for cleaning up snow. It's also a great time to reconnect with the neighbors.

What I can't believe is that we are up for another round of Searching for Roy G Biv (the hunt for the colors of the rainbow). The third Thursday of the month  (February 20) is upon us. This month's color is ORANGE. I hope that you'll join in on the fun. Here's the info about posting photos and a calendar for the rest of the year.

Now back to book edits, class prep, designing new class samples and Printed Fabric Bee fabrics!

More Orange and Roy Winner

Orange Challenge Fabric
I'm happy to report that the search for orange continues...

Lisa at arzigoglare has a luscious sampling of Florentine oranges. She was inspired to sit down at her studio table and create some absolutely wonderful orange (and terracotta and copper) colored paper houses. Enjoy this rich selection of oranges.

Charlton Stitcher has also posted a second day of orange delights. She focused on this year's challenge of finding tints and shades of the color of the month. What an imaginative selection you'll find in her post.

I'm also happy to report that the names went into the hat and Charlton Stitcher is the winner of this month's challenge fabric...Congratulations! Please send me an email with you mailing address and the fabric will be heading your way. (threadborn@gmail.com).

Thanks to all of you who participated this month and for passing the word along to others. Next month it's yellow...I'm already on the search...

Searching for Roy G Biv II: Orange Updated

Carrots from Golden Harvest in Kittery, Maine.

It's been a crazy month so I had to go to the archives for my ORANGE.

Heirloom gourds from the local farm stand.
Red peppers from the Farmer's Market outside of the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
Pumpkins also from the Farmer's Market, San Francisco.

I seem to have a thing about produce!

Just a few more photos for a bit of variety.

Nasturtium, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
Andy Warhol from the Modern Art Museum in San Francisco.
Yardage I designed and printed for Caos on F Gallery.

Looking forward to seeing your ORANGE this month. Leave me a comment, and I will link to your photos. If you don't have a blog, website or Flickr page, send me an email and I'll post your photos here. Just a reminder that I will continue to update this post through Saturday midnight (or add a supplement in another post).

Here is the ORANGE Challenge Fabric. It fits with this month's produce theme. The background texture is made from a lentil block and the blue shapes are carved grapefruit rind. I'll be drawing names on Sunday morning for the lucky winner. Remember, you have to play in order to be eligible for the drawing.

For more ORANGE, check out my cohort, Jennifer Coyne Qudeen's blog.

Take a look at the variety of ORANGES over at Charlton Stitcher. Love that stash of fabrics!.

Be sure to stop by Kim Henkel's blog, Letting in the Light  for some very artful ORANGES.

Maya at Million Little Stitches has some wild ORANGE.

Lisa at arzigogolare is experimenting with copper wire (close enough to ORANGE for me!). The freesias have made it into a beautiful bouquet of ORANGES  and pinks.

Deb at salt-bush-stitch was out and about for her ORANGES.

Be sure to visit Susan's blog to see all the marvelous close-up ORANGES.

Roy II Reminder: Orange

Just a reminder that we are a week away from another Search for Roy G Biv (the rainbow). This month's color is ORANGE. Hope you will join in the fun!

You'll find the rules here.

I've been alternating between being chained to my laptop and spending innumerable hours in the studio. Hooray! The handouts for my 2-day workshop, A Story in the Making are complete! The samples are in various stages of completion...which is actually not a bad thing as it means that I can demonstrate techniques on them.

Here are some in process:

A note to myself for the future...try to avoid teaching two new workshops two weekends in a row!

My trip to Savannah in a week and a half is looking very inviting, at the moment....

Hamsa Redux

Remember this?

Remember my saying that I thought I liked it better than this?

I've decided to redo the hamsa piece for F.I.N.E.

The first thing I did was to enlarge it. It will now fill out most of the 12" square canvas.

I also decided that I would create three separate fabrics, back them each with a fusible, cut out the needed shapes and fuse them together. I want this piece to be bolder than my original concept.

Today, I worked on the orange fabric that will be used for the hamsa hand.

After a wash of color with Pebeo Setacolor Transparent Fabric Paint, I applied Pebeo Opaque Fabric Paint with a piece of scrunched plastic wrap.

I decided that I wanted to create a hot glue block with circular designs that would fit within the hand.

At first, I made one print with the hot glue block on the orange fabric. I used light orange Opaque paint. It was barely noticeable and very boring.

I then decided to print the fabric with the block multiple times, changing the orientation of the block as well as printing it in two different shades of orange.

This is how it came out.

Orange fabric detail

Definitely much more interesting!

Tomorrow, I work on the other fabrics.

And the winners are...

Winners of the Roy G Biv fabrics

My husband pulled these winners of the Searching for Roy G Biv Challenge fabrics out of his JMU baseball cap...

Congratulations!

Lisa, please comment here to let me know whether you would like the red cats piece or the oranges piece.

Kathy you will get whichever piece Lisa doesn' t pick.

Yesterday, I started work on samples for some magazine articles I'll be proposing. I had some fun with brown paper and cardboard. Slathered on the Mod Podge to hold it all together.

This morning I took a look and they are ready for printing and rubbings.

I have some other sample ideas in the works. Want to get these proposals off soon.

I also hope to get over to Home Depot today to finally get a look at some of the possibilities in the gardening department. I especially want to check out anything that looks like a grid or could be made into a grid. I'd like some grids to go with my weeds!
