Birthday Explosion Box

Design Team-May-2015-5
Today is my turn as a Susan's Tierney-Cockburn Design Team Member to post a project on the Elizabeth Craft Designs Blog.   I decorated a Birthday Explosion Box using three of Susan's new flower dies.   The recipient will not only receive long lasting flowers, but also a gift card to make their birthday wishes come true!   The flowers I created for this project are:  Garden Notes Hydrangea, Garden Notes Lilac, and Garden Notes Hyacinthe.  Susan's new Garden Notes flowers are just the perfect size to decorate cards and boxes, and I am sure will be treasured because they look so realistic.

When closed, this is a six inch square explosion box.

Design Team May 2014 Front
This is a picture of the top of the box.  I used Secret Garden Graphic 45 design paper to cover the top and sides of the box;   The Grid framing "Secret Garden" was die cut using Susan's Garden Patch - 7/8-inch & Mini Leaves die set.  Four squares were cut out of the center of the grid and centered over the words in the design paper.  I love the size of the flowers in the new collection from Susan.  I die cut the Garden Notes Hydrangea  using four shades of light purple card stock and mixed the colors on each flower.  I used black Elizabeth Craft Design Black Corner Stickers, tulle and a ribbon to complete the top.

To create the bottom of the Explosion Box, use a 12 x 12 inch piece of card stock; score at 3 inches on each side.  Cut out the four corners.  Crease the seams well
.
ECD-STCDT-May-2015-tut5
The top of the box must be just slightly larger.  Use another piece of 12 x 12 inch card stock.  If using a score board, push the the card stock over 1/16 of an inch and score at 3 inches.  Do this on all four sides.  This will make the lid just slightly larger to fit over the bottom of the box.  Add adhesive tape to the four corners to create the lid.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-7
The next two pictures help you see how the inside was decorated.  I created additional Garden Notes - Hydrangeas for the bottom side of the box.  For the flower on the left side, I used Susan's Garden Notes - Lilac dies.  For the flower on the right side, I used  the Garden Notes Hyacinthe dies.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-6
To create the dimensional (popup) "Happy Birthday" sentiment, I used the Elizabeth Craft Designs Happy Birthday PopUp dies.  I have never seen a popup used this way, but love the dimension it gave to the inside of the box.   I used a piece of card stock 6 inches by 9 inches for this die cut; it was scored at 3 inches.  The die cut was placed on the score line to create the popup; it fit perfect for the popup on the side panel.  The sentiment was die cut using black card stock.  The Silver Stars were created by die cutting the stars again, using ECD Double Sided Transparent Tape attached to white card stock.    ECD Silver Silk Microfine Glitter was poured over the tapeThey were glued over the stars on the die cut.  A strip of the glittered card stock was cut and glued behind the 6 stars  on the bottom of the popup.
On the other three sides, I cut a piece of card stock slightly smaller and embossed the panels with the ECD Swirly Curves embossing folder.  They were glued to each side panel.    In the center of the card.  I cut a piece of 6 x 6 inch card stock and embossed the bottom 3/4 with the ECD  Sea Glass embossing folder. A piece was cut out to fit around the popup panel on the top.  To create a pocket on the bottom, I used the Paris Edges lacy die.  It was attached on the bottom and each side with double sided tape.  This created a pocket for a gift card.   The ECD Tags & More 6 - Daisy die was used to create a tag with a small pocket on the bottom to hold the gift card.  The candles and gift are ECD stickers that I attached over a piece of card stock that had Double Sided Transparent tape and Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter; they were colored with Copic Markers.  I used  ECD letter stickers for "a gift for you" sentiment by the present.  Both the candles and the gift were attached with dimensional tape.  ECD black line stickers were added around the Happy Birthday Popup and along the bottom of the center panel.  More black sticker corners, to match those on the lid, were added to complete the inside.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-Tut2
I will show you how I created the hydrangea flowers.  I used the base piece in the Garden Notes Hydrangea die set.  It was shaped with the largest ball stylus in Susan's Tool Set.  By shaping this base piece, it will give the hydrangea the rounded (domed) shape.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-Tut1
I used the smallest ball stylus and pressed down in the center of each petal, on each die cut flower piece, to give it shape, then pressed down in the very center to cup the petals.  (I know, that looks like a lot of petals, but I was creating 5 hydrangea flowers and wanted to be sure I had plenty of petals die cut.  I didn't really need this many, but now I have more petals for future use.)

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-008
The petals were glued around the bottom of the shaped base and then the entire base was covered.  I mixed the shades of purple petals to give variation to the color of the flower.  After the entire base was covered, I added additional petals on top of the one already attached; this creates a nice full blossom.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-Tut3
Here is a closeup of one of the finished Hydrangea.  The finished flower is less than 2 inches wide and about 1/2 inch high.   Aren't they beautiful!

Explosion boxes are always a lot of fun to receive.  I hope you will give this a try and surprise someone you know!

Craft Hoarders Anonymous Guest Designer

I was very honored to be asked by Gloria Stengel to be a guest designer for the Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge this month.  This week the #9 Challenge is "Fold It".  Here is the information for this challenge.

Use some sort of "fun fold" on your project. You can make a fun fold card, a pop-up card, an explosion box, or other type of project that makes use of folded cardstock or paper. You can share some folding techniques that are perfect for scrapbook layouts or mixed media pieces. Create a mini album with a folded binding. Fold some ribbon to make pleats. De-hoard those supplies and show us your folds....paper folds that is!
sponsors: WorldWin Papers and StencilGirl

For  this challenge I created a 6"x6" Explosion Box. This is a larger explosion box from any others I have seen or made. I created a larger box so I could enclose a a "chest" in the center, with four drawers.   Below I have a tutorial to show you how I created it.

I used a 12"x12" piece of card stock for the bottom of this explosion box. Using my Scor-Pal, I scored at 3" from the edge of the card stock, on all four sides.   Crease each score line well with a bone folder. The corner squares were cut off as shown. If you haven't made an explosion box before, the sides fall down when you remove the lid from the box.  These measurements will create a 6"x6" explosion box

To create the lid for the box, use another 12"x12" piece of card stock.  Score all sides at 3".

Cut up to the score line on two sides of this piece, as shown above, then on the "flap" (3"x3") piece cut off a narrow piece forming a "V" shape.  This will help create a smooth edge when you attach the end pieces to the long piece to create a lid.Do this again on the opposite side.

This picture shows you were to add tape to the end pieces so it holds securely.  You need to add tape to folded ends on both sides.

With the end pieces inside the lid, match end pieces to score lines and press firmly, to create your lid.  You now have all the pieces ready to decorate your explosion box.

This is the Craft Hoarder Anonymous challenge, so I have dug out items, including design paper I have been hoarding to decorate the sides and the top of the box.  On the top I have added a Marianne Design Petra's Ornaments (LR0279) doily to the lower left side.  On top I created a hydrangea using Susan's Garden Hydrangea dies.  The small flowers were created using the Memory Box "Norland Flower dies".  The butterflies were cut out of Graphic 45 Design paper.

On the front side of the lid, I added a Marianne  Design, Anja's Vintage Frame.  On the other three sides,  I added the Spellbinder Flourish Trim,S2-005.

To create the little "chest" for the center of the Explosion Box, I created four little match boxes (2.25" x 3"), attached them together with ScorTape then enclosed them with a long strip to go completely around the boxes.  The chest was covered with more of the same design paper used on the explosion box then decorated with two hydrangeas created with Susan's Garden dies.  The inside panels were decorated with Marianne Design Anja's Vintage Frame, Memory Box Norland Flowers and Graphic 45 butterflies cut from the Design Paper.

Explosion Box using Susan's Garden Rose Dies For Tombow

Last week I was contacted about participating in the Tombow "100 Day" Celebration. Tombow will provide $10,000 in Tombow art products to the Council for Arts Education, which is a nonprofit organization promoting and supporting art education and quality art programs nationwide.  There are 100 different bloggers participating in this celebration, and for each blog post, Tombow will be donating $100 worth of products to the Council for Arts Education in their honor.  It is an honor and privilege to participate in this celebration.  My blog post, along with others participating, is also featured on theTombow Blog.

This is a picture of the products Tombow sent me to work with on my project:  The Tombow Stamp Runner Dot Adhesive, Tombow Dual Brush Pen Set, and Irojiten colored pencils.  Thank you Tombow; I loved working with these products.

For my project, I decided to design an "Explosion Box".  I love creating flowers from card  stock, so my box contains many flowers.

This is a picture of the explosion box open and you can see the box lid in the top left corner.  I have created both a large rose and many smaller roses using Susan's Garden dies from Sizzix.  There are two Memory Box "Pippi Butterflies" attached to clear acrylic flying above the large rose.  You can see them best in the first picture above.

This picture shows the box closed.

This is a picture of the top of the lid.

To go along with the box, I created a card which includes mini roses created with the Susan's Garden "Mini Petals".  The stamped birdhouse image is from Heartfelt Creations.

The Heartfelt Creations image was colored using the Tombow Irojiten Colored Pencils.  I love these pencils. Usually when I color with colored pencils I use Gamsol to blend the colors.   The Irojiten pencils blend so well I did not need to use Gamsol. The Irojiten pencils come in 90 different colors.  I am going to start working to collect all 90 of them for my coloring needs.

Below I am going to give a few instructions on how I created the Explosion Box.

I started with a 12x12 piece of white card stock (80 Cover Weight), for the box.  Since it is an explosion box, the sides need to fall open once the lid is taken off.  The 12x12 piece was scored at 4" from the left side, on all four sides, then the corner pieces were cut out.  The four center pieces were then creased well on the score lines with a bone folder.

The inside of the box was decorated with three layers of card stock, each cut 1/8" smaller, on each side.  The bottom piece was attached to the side with the Tombow Stamp Runner and the other two layers were attached using dimensional tape.  To add the Memory Box "Floral Circle" in the center of each side, I used Tombow Mono Aqua Liquid Glue.  The large rose in the center of the box was created using the Susan's Garden "Rose Die".  On the outside of the box I cut a piece of card stock slightly smaller and embossed it using the Cuttlebug "Swiss Dots" embossing folder.

This picture shows the die cut pieces used for the small roses using the Susan's Garden "Mini Petals" dies.  On the left, shows the petals and the base used for creating the small roses.  Each package of Susan's Garden Flower Sets includes all pieces needed to complete the flower including the leaves.  The second picture shows the next step -- glue petals on every other point on the base and the picture on the right shows the completed layer which will be used for the bottom of the flower.  I created two layers like this and glued them together to form a rose.  Next I created a small rose bud to attach to the center.  For the buds, some of the petals (6 or 7) were shaped around self closing tweezers.  I have many tutorials on my blog on how to create these flowers.

For the Explosion Box lid I cut another piece of card stock 8" x 8" and scored each side at 1 7/16" on all four sides.  The lid must be slightly larger than the box in order to fit properly.  The sides were cut up to the score line as shown above.  A small "V" shape was cut off on the outer piece (the piece that will be the flap that is attached inside to form the lid).  I used the Tombow Stamp Runner to attach the flaps inside.

I want to show you how I created the design on the side of the lid.

I used Liquitex Modeling Paste and The Crafters Workshop "Mini Birds of a  Feather" template on pieces cut to fit each side.  As soon as the modeling paste was dry, these pieces were added to the side pieces of the lid with Tombox Stamp Runner.  Right under these textured pieces I added a Spellbinders "Flourish Trim".  The sides of this Flourish were a little too wide, but were trimmed off to fit.

I hope you enjoy this project I designed for the Tombow "100 Day Celebration".

Daisy Explosion Box

Explosion Box

Lid of Explosion Box

Explosion Box Inside

I showed you the lid to this explosion box a couple of weeks ago and promised to show you the inside later.  I forgot to do that, so I am doing it today.  This box was created using the following stamps/dies from Heartfelt Creations:  HCPC 3325 Daisy Patch Bouquet PreCut set; HCPC 33324 Daisy Patch Swirls PreCut Set; HCPC 3318 Daisy Patch Flowers PreCut Set; HCD 703 Daisy Patch Diecuts; HCPC 3363 Inspire Me Sentiments; HCD 702 Decorative Butterfly-Border Die

I designed a Tea Cup explosion box for Joan's Workshop last week and it had a larger base in order to accommodate the tea cup.  This explosion box is 11.25” square when opened out. Start by scoring at 3.75 inches from all 4 sides then cut out all four corners so you have a “t” shape. The lid is 5 7/8” square. Score at 1” from all 4 sides. Cut a 1” slit up toward the middle section on both score lines on one edge. On opposite side, do the same thing. Cut corners diagonally. After decorating, fold on score lines and attach corners with ScorTape to create lid. Use the largest Classic Square Nestability to cut 10 squares. Emboss 5 of these with your favorite embossing folder. Use the second largest Classic Square Nestie to cut 5 more squares and emboss these also. Cut five squares with the Nestability, next to the largest, Lacy Square die using a coordinating color.

The Daisy Patch Swirl was stamped in green on the smallest squares for the inside of the box, using Olive Pastel Chalk Ink. The Daisy Patch Bouquet was stamped in green three times using the same ink. Two of these will be layered for the inside middle of the box and one for the box top. All the leaves were colored with a green chalk pencil. Using the three smallest single daisy stamps, many were stamped using Rose Coral Chalk ink. They were cut out with the matching dies. All the flowers were shaped and layered then placed over the images that were stamped with green ink. Pearls were added. On the lid two Decorative Borders were layered on top square, then the arrangement placed between them. A punched border was added around the bottom of the lid then trim added along the top of it attaching both with ScorTape. For the front of the closed box, embossed squares were added to each side, then the sentiment was stamped and cut out and a Decorative Border placed on top.

Explosion boxes are so fun to create.  Hope you will give it a try.

Tea Cup Explosion Box Tutorial

This weekend Joan had a workshop at her home and I had the privilege of designing the products she would be teaching.  She wanted to use the Sizzix Big Die "3-D Tea Cup" for one of the projects.  Isn't it a great tea cup.  To give a surprise element to the project I asked if I could design an explosion box and have the tea cup in the center.  She loved the idea.

To create the explosion box I started with a 12x12 inch piece of pink card stock.  Not all 12x12 card stock is exactly 12 inches so I cut it down to 11 3/4 inches.  I needed the box as large as possible in order for the cup and saucer to fit perfectly in the center.  This piece was scored at 3 3/4" on all four sides.  For the lid, use a 6 1/2" square piece of card stock and score it at 1 inch on all four sides.

To create the box, cut away the four corners, cutting right on the score lines,  and your piece will look like this.  Use a bone folder to crease all the score lines.  The sides of the box will be held up with the lid and will fall down to show what is inside.

For the lid, cut a 1 inch slit up to the score line.  Do this on both ends of that side.  Turn the lid completely around and do the same thing on the opposite side.  Cut off the corners at an angle starting from score line cutting out to the edge. By cutting the corners off, the pieces will fit better when taped down.  Decorate the top of the lid first, then put ScorTape on each corner and tuck them in to create the lid.

The products used to decorate this box are: as mentioned above the Sizzix Big Die "3-D Tea Cup;  JustRite "You Inspire Me" and "Mother Nature's Gifts" stamp sets; Martha Stewart "Monarch butterfly trim" punch; Martha Stewart "Monarch Butterfly" punch; Sizzix Corner Flourish #2; Sizzix Branch with Leaves; Nestabilities Lotus Pendant; Pink and Purple vellum for the flowers.  The saucer that comes with the die was too large so I used two Nestability ovals:  the smallest Petite Oval Lg and the second smallest Classic Oval Scallop.  The cup was embossed with a Cuttlebug embossing folder.  I did not emboss the handle to make it look more realistic.  The trim on the lid was something in my "stash".  It was attached with ScorTape. All products used for this project can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Two other projects were completed at the workshop and I will show them tomorrow.  I think every one had a great time working on this project.  Joan's next workshop will be in June.  These workshops usually fill up even before she announces them, so if you would like to attend, be sure and email Joan for date information and to make your reservation.  There is no charge for her workshops.  You can see the other projects and read about the workshops she had this weekend at Joan's Gardens.

A few weeks ago, I showed you a lid from another explosion box I made.  That one is a different size and I will post that box again showing the inside, and will give you the dimensions.  Watch for that one later this week.
