Today I have used the SwallowTail Butterfly digital stamp by Fred She Said Digital Designs to make a pair of shaker cards.  This digital stamp set comes with a combination of black & white and pre-coloured images.  I have used the pre-coloured SwallowTail Butterfly digital stamp to try a new-to-me shaker card technique.

My cards started on my Silhouette Studio design mat.  I opened the pre-coloured SwallowTail Butterfly digital stamp and a pretty blue digital watercolour paper.  I confess, I printed a bundle of these butterflies, fussy cut each one, carefully inked the outer edges then decided on a different card design, so my kaleidoscope of butterflies (yes, I looked it up) have been set aside for another day.  I added an offset to the butterfly, printed a sheet of them then cut with my Cameo.  I trimmed the digital paper to 4 3/4" x 6 1/2", added a 3 1/2" round window and sized the butterfly to fit neatly inside, printed then cut with my Cameo.  I added an 1/16" offset to make a matting layer for the window panel and cut it with my Cameo.  I matted a card base 5 1/8" x 6 7/8" to allow for a 1/8" border around the matted shaker panel.  I die cut sets of black and white alphas to make layered "HAPPY" and sets of a layered "Birthday" for both cards, adhering the layers together before adhering to the card fronts.
I used double-sided tape to adhere acetate to the shaker window then added foam around the back of the matted card front, carefully sealing around the edges of the window.  I went around the outer and inner edges of the foam with a black marker to match the matting layer.  The butterflies were adhered together with some clear jewellery bead thread between the layers along the middle body line.  The layered butterfly was secured in place with double-sided tape, with the length at the top allowing the butterfly to float down in the window but not to the bottom and the length at the bottom allowing the butterfly to float up to the top of the window ... sure hope this makes sense ... the idea is to allow the butterfly to flutter around the window without going upside down.  You can read all about it HEREin this fabulous tutorial by Jennifer McGuire.  I put some double-sided tape on top of the thread, cutting slightly longer, folding back and putting more tape on top, to ensure the thread doesn't work loose.  I had so much fun making a special shaker mix, combining cupped and flat sequins, seed beads and bugle beads in a range of blues, black and sparkling clear.  The photo below was my second attempt at making the card.  The first time I sealed it closed it was way too full, so I quickly peeled off the backing layer before the liquid adhesive had dried, luckily my "Quick Dry" wasn't too quick!  I tipped the shaker mix out, made a huge mess, eventually dividing all the different elements in half and sharing them between the two cards.  This time I sealed the card again and it was much better.

Before I sealed the second card, I decided to carefully pick out the beads and add more sparkling clear flat sequins to give the butterfly more room to float around the window.  If you look closely in the shaker windows above and below, you will be able to see the clear thread limiting the movement of the butterflies.

Today I have used the Daisies & LadyBugs digital stamp set from Fred She Said, one of our generous sponsors this week, to make some daisy filled Spring cards.
I have to confess that this is an absolutely fabulous set of images, both as digital stamps and pre-coloured images that can be combined together.  The pre-coloured images are a real bonus when your body doesn't let you colour, so I thoroughly enjoyed fussy cutting a field of flowers to make my cards.

My first card uses the beautiful pre-coloured image panel.
I printed the panel several times, using one layer to make the 5" x 7" card panel, the others were fussy cut.  I popped the fussy cut elements with foam and layered them together over the image panel to give lots of dimension.

Here are a couple of shots showing the dimension of the popped fussy cut layers.
If you click on the image you will be able to see more detail.

Next comes my field of daisies with a cheery "hello" to welcome Spring.

It's a pop up box card.
It has lots of dimension when open and folds flat for mailing.

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the card base (details below), my Fiskars grass border punch to cut the grassy panels on the bridges on the inside of the card and my Sizzix Big Shot to cut the Paper Smooches "hello" die.  To cut a long story short, I opened the images and cut file on my Silhouette Studio design mat. enlarged the card base to 11 1/2", so that it would just fit on my cutting mat, then sized the pre-coloured images to fit each panel, printed on cardstock, cut the panels with my Cameo.  I printed extra images from the card panels so that I could fussy cut the layers and pop them in place with foam for extra dimension.  I also took the single daisy image, duplicated, then mirrored, then made multiple copies in a variety of sizes, so that I had a lot of different daisies to fill my card.  I got pretty distracted while cutting my daisies and ladybugs and ended up cutting enough for several cards, even after using all these here in the pop up box card.  I went around the edges of each piece with Memento Tuxedo Black Dual Tip marker to give them a neat finish, instead of showing the white core of the cardstock.  I needed support for the daisy stems and the acetate I use to make shaker cards is pretty flimsy, so I stretched my stash and trimmed the packaging from a pair of Big Shot cutting pads to make narrow strips.  I adhered the daisies to the acetate strips, so they were well supported to stand tall but still a little flexible to "float" around.  I made three "bridges" to go inside the card, punched a 12" strip of grass and trimmed it down to cover the front of each bridge and inside the front of the card.  I adhered a variety of daisies to each grassy strip then adhered them in place ... it was pretty fiddly but well worth the effort.  I die cut five of the "hello" words and layered them together before adhering to the front panel.

This fancy fold card folds flat for mailing.

As with my first card, the daisies and ladybugs on the flaps and back panel were layered with foam for extra dimension.  The sentiment really popped when the five layers with adhered together.

Here are some more photos of the open pop up box card
... the flowers and dimension make me feel happy :)

The patterned paper around the base makes it look like a basket filled with flowers.

I am going to enter my
pop up box card

in the following challenges
:
my favourite colour today is blue - lots of blue sky and blue accents on the flowers ... when I look at my card it has touches of most colours of the rainbow, just missing violet, perhaps I should add a purple butterfly :)
(I confess,
it's usually green as it's part of nearly every project I make, it works perfectly with every colour of the rainbow ... and I could not resist adding four rows of neatly trimmed green grass to the middle of my card)
optional theme: Embellish It
