February over

Whether "winter" is also over,
we have yet to see
. . . . .

The tiny bit of icing sugar this morning
can hardly be called SNOW !
(and we had LOTS of sunshine later)

Snow and ice is more for these "critters"

Another FUN workshop online by Yaroslava Troynich
to make these cute seals

*
And, though we feed the birds
to keep them alive through the cold season,
when someone flies (flees) the wrong way
the windows prove to be a deadly barrier !

Last Sunday I kind of celebrated 25 years survival breast cancer !
And daughter brought today some delicious pastries
(from Rotterdam)  to celebrate it extra !

day 23

While clearing the clutter for the party a little plastic bag emerged
with some tiny bits that I did some time ago
on water soluble and machine stitching.
It just fitted nicely
to the icy green turquoise disc
that I made earlier and I turned it into
a "cold" pendant.

My PINK RIBBON Textile Jewel
for day 23 :

a wet felted disc on an adjustable homemade cord'
stitched on both sides : water soluble snowflake, some Tyvek and tulle,
some sequins and seed beads
(8 x 5,5 cm)

For a donation
of (at least)

 € 15

this icy blue pendant
can be yours, to keep or give away
to someone you hold dear.
Just send me an email at
 fiberrainbow@gmail.com
or tell me in the comments below
so we can arrange the following steps.
Paypal is possible and simple !
(+ postage)

ALL your money will go to PINK RIBBON !

 "WINTER  IS  COMING"

Tomorrow
there will be a new Pink Ribbon Textile Jewel
for YOU !
See you tomorrow !

Hungry visitors !!!

There are SIX of them

No wonder these ring-necked parakeets are doing so well
here in our country where they don't originate
(though they probably are all descendants
of some that escaped years ago !)

They know when there is new food in the feeders !

Being very messy eaters
they also provide food for the birds that stay on the ground
like the finches and blackbirds.
And in our garden also : the ducks from the water !

a BIG difference

When I think of this last weekend
and the one before that
. . . . .
there couldn't be a greater difference :
in temperature
and the activities outside !
One was   WINTER
the next was   SPRING

You can hardly imagine a  BIGGER  difference in one week  !!!

For the Stitch Club this week had a workshop by Jude Kingshott
and she designed for us to make a small book
out of cotton organdie
(which is rather transparent)
with coloured shapes and neat stitching in it.

Well, that organdie was a problem for many of us :
it is not a material that is normally in your stash,
but of course you could use any other materials
that you did have at home.

I was thinking and planning
when I had a conversation with another Stitch-member
and then I suddenly remembered the dark purple table runner
that I bought years ago just for the strange fabric : cotton organdie !
Together with some greenish stretchy fabric
and my home dyed silk thread I could make a start.

My first page

Some other pages of the final booklet
It was very special to work on such thin material
where you can see trough one page to the next.

LIGHT on the shortest day !

December, the year,
is rolling slowly to its end.
Things have quieted down
after the rush of felting and preparing
for the (not very successful) market.

All the stand holders managed to get there ...
then the snow really started :
so hardly any visitors !
More than 5 cm snow
and Holland comes to a standstill !
(towards the end of the afternoon
it started raining, so we came home safely !)

It's been a long time since I did some drawing,
so for this Solstice day
I took out my Inktense pencils
and some special pens,
and made a Solstice / Light / Feast drawing
(instead of a stitched piece)

A very
HAPPY
Solstice, Light Feast, Jul, Chanukah, Christmas
to ALL my friends in Blog-land
all over the world :
may you spend many joyful hours together with your loved ones !

And to remember that failed market-Sunday
almost two weeks ago, some pictures ...

a tiny bit of flu ...

No, it's not very bad
but no appetite at all
and lots of sleep
...
so only a little of January
that was left

We had ice !!!

Though not very thick
so NO big tours
(that's what a LOT of Dutch people LOVE)

And of course we had our bird guests :

*

Made just a few stitches for
"a year of stitches : 2017"

*

Some new zig-zag socks

And you might have problems transporting your
W.I.P socks when you use small sock needles :

this solves that problem !
(so I made a few more of these pouches)

(hmmmm making it an early night again)

Solstice

Today, the shortest day
(at least here ... "down under" my friends have the longest day)
so time to post my Solstice piece.

Winter Solstice

I finished it yesterday evening,
right on time !

I was so happy to receive that indigo dyed thread
(that I sent as white thread to Birgit)
it was the best colour, together with a bit of yellow
to make the stitched "rays" between the "points".

This piece has a tail :
the Kaffe Fasset strip at the bottom
was longer than the (20 cm) side
and I left it on because I didn't know how to proceed, yet
...
Then I found another (blue) strip
that was just as long as the extending end
so I just stitched the two together !

A coincidence (?) that we found something else
with a tail, this morning ???

You may know that we have two cats in the house.
(they're daughter's, but live at our house for the time being)

About a week ago I suddenly discovered
mouse droppings
in the kitchen and the living room !
The cats are staying in that area at night
(otherwise they sneak up to the bedroom
and we won't be sleeping very quietly ...)
But apparently, our cats are
too well-fed,
too lazy,
or just a bit too old (15)
.....

These last few days we took away the cat food at night,
cleaned the counter top very carefully,
and closed all the cupboards
where there might be something to eat
.....

Finally

this morning : there he (she) was
another tail
!

(hmmmmm ... too well-fed for sure !

 On this shortest day
we went to Amsterdam
to say a last farewell
to the old mother (97) of a good friend.
They gave her the most wonderful goodbye :
there are some wonderful musicians in that family
and during the ceremony they played several times,
what a special way to remember someone dear !

new stitching start

I did as I said yesterday :
begin a new little cloth to stitch
I like to work small
when I have no special idea what to do
20 x 20 cm
(almost 8 x 8 ")
(then I can mount it on a small size canvas when finished)

Scraps on a piece of mull
dark like the winter time
(though the temperature is rather high here,
no real winter yet)

Of course basted down with invisible stitches
(glued)
like we all learned from Jude !

The starry bit on the left
with half a circle cut out destined it to become
the edge of the midwinter sun :
so a solstice piece it will be

winter solstice

It was the shortest day today
and not a very bright one.
So I sat near the window to finish
my little solstice quiltlet

Winter solstice 2014

For the sun rays using kantha stitches, worked out pretty good, I think.
(in fact with kantha stitching you use running stitches that
are paired neatly next to each other, which gives
the funny looking rivulets in the fabric)

Here are the two solstice pieces sisterly (or is it brotherly ?)
next to each other.

And on the backside too.

The sun goes to its turning point and the days are (slowly)
getting longer.
(for the northern hemisphere that is ...)

I wish a lot of warm and bright days
to anyone who need it.

12 Februari 12

Today the weather is slowly changing :
we had very cold freezing days for over a week.
( unfortunately for a lot of people the "monster - tour"
will not be held because the ice wasn't the required 15 cm
over the whole length of the 200 km ... )
But lots of people had fun on the ice !

Smaller tours were held in all parts of Holland
and lots of people were taking part.
(doesn't this remind a bit of the old 17th century paintings ...)

*
At home other things were done :

( a bit commission bag, and daughter's new hat ...
yes : all hats look somewhat like Darth Vader, sorry )

and a finished little vest
