Design of the Week - Pink Flower - 12th February 2019

Hello, hello - Karen here with my DOTW post.

We have a cute little flower design this week and I used it to make a fabric flower for a little tote bag.

I started by ungrouping the design and removed the internal line of all the pieces.

I then filled them with a pink polka dot pattern.  I adjusted the transparancy of the pattern on each of the upper two pieces to make them a slightly different colour. I filled the leaves with a green pattern and the centre  with a yellow pattern.

Once printed onto printable cotton fabric, I cut the flowers out, ironed the large flower and leaves to the bag  and sewed the remaining one adding a few buttons to the centre of the flower.

Design of the Week - You Are Magic Font - 8th Jan 2019 - Using Font Glyphs

Hello, hello Karen here with my usual Wednesday post using the free Design of the Week.  I am absolutely thrilled with this week's offering a gorgeous font called You Are Magic.  This font has some amazing glyphs (some with phrases) and I have used it on two projects.  You really should snag this font as, for this week only, it is free - saving you over £3.00!

First, I used the font and one of the Glyphs on a t-shirt using glow in the dark HTV - I noticed too late that one of the little lines at the bottom is missing :0(.

To access the glyphs is really easy.

On the text panel (1) choose Glyphs (2)

This will then give you access to all the different glyphs available to a font.  These can be curly swishes to add to letters or in the case of this font lots of little graphics - see below.  To add a glyph simply click on it and it will be added to your page.

As you can see, along with the graphics there are also phrases with this font.  I decided to use one of them on a scrapbook page as I was curious as to how it would look in a larger size and whether it would draw well with a sketch pen.  I chose the 'You Are Magic' title and also repeated the moon phase glyph as a border around my page.  I also added two moons, flipping one to face the other way.

I used a dark blue metallic sketch pen for the title and border and was delighted how nice they looked.

I absolutely love this font and the possibilities it gives me.

Design of the Week - Boo Ghost - 9th October 2018

Hello, hello - Karen here with this week's free design - Boo Ghost.

What a cute little chap he is and I though he would look fab-boo-lous on a little black onsie.

I resized the design and then added 'Too Cute To Spook'

I ungrouped the words and used the colour picker to change them to the same orange as the 'O' on the Boo Ghost.    I then changed the line from cut to 'No Cut'

and also made it the same colour as the 'O'.

I added the 'too cute' to the top of the ghost and 'To Spook' to the bottom and changed the outline of the ghost to black.

Finally I added an offset so that it was cut out with a slight border.

I wanted to use printable heat transfer media

so I added registration marks to my design and flipped it horizontally before printing.

All that was left to do was to cut it out using the suggested settings and add to my little black onesie.

Brewing Mischief Baby Grow

Hi everyone. It's Verity here from Pretty Little Button bringing you another project. Today's project features the glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl.  When I was browsing the Silhouette store for Halloween designs, I saw this design and instantly knew I wanted to make it into a baby grow. I thought it was such a fun little design that would be funny for a little baby grow as the meaning could mean an array of things! Whatsmore, as it was Halloween related I also used glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl, allowing your baby to join in the fun! Though can't guarantee the baby will sleep with the glow, so perhaps take it off before nap time!

Brewing Mischief Baby Grow details:

Before I design my piece in the design space, I like to work out how big the decal will be on my item of clothing. I use a piece of a scrap piece of paper cut to a square and position this over the baby grow. I can then look to see if it is too big or too small for the piece of clothing. This piece of paper was cut to 5 inches, which was large enough for the baby grow. I also tried 4 inches which for me was a little on the small side.

In the end, I ended up creating the design to be around 4.5 inches.

I loaded the Brewing Mischief design into my design space and right clicked to flip horizontally. I do this before the send panel as I wanted to position the design on my mat over a particular area. The top left-hand corner of my mat is starting to lose its stick. So it can slip a little when cutting in that area.

In order to cut out in another area of the mat, I set the page size in the page setup panel to the width of the media. This glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl is 9 inches wide. Now the boundaries of the media are visible, I can position the design over the media and mat in an area where it is more stick for the mat, but also isn't beyond the boundaries of my media.

I don't have a heat press as I don't do enough HTV to warrant spending the money on one. I instead use an iron. However, I find the set up below works the best for me with an iron. I place a folded up towel and place this on the floor. The item of clothing is placed on top of this, and then I positioned the HTV decal over this. Lastly, I add a sheet of baking paper over the top to prevent and scorching.

I prefer ironing this on the floor as opposed to an ironing board, and this solid surface of the floor allows me to get good pressure when applying the heat. My ironing board isn't the sturdiest and therefore opted for the floor!

I wanted to show you this picture as it was fun; as I was heat setting the vinyl, it kept glowing briefly as I removed the iron. Obviously, it glows in the darkness of the iron over the top, and you get brief glimpses of it before it fades when you removed the iron.

Design of the Week - Welcome To Our Home - 22nd May 2018

Hello, it's Wednesday so that means my turn to blog what I have made with this week's free design.

When I first saw the design I thought I would make a canvas with it but I had made a canvas last week - Then I remembered that I had a black apron in my store of items that I use to decorate with HTV and decided that it would be ideal to put the design on.  Very appropriate for our house and perfect to wear when I am preparing meals, I am a very messy cook!

I resized the design to 7 ins wide and cut it from white HTV.  I then used my heat press to adhere the design to the apron.

I am thrilled with the result and in fact am wearing it now as I type this whilst waiting for dinner to cook!
