Wedding Frame using Printable Canvas

Hello, hello - Karen here with my usual Wednesday post.  This week I have used printable canvas in my project.  I must confess that I haven't really used this before but was thrilled with how well it printed (I used an inkjet printer) and also how nicely it cut.

For my project I have made a frame with a phrase added that is suitable for a wedding gift.

I started by choosing a background to print and resized it to 8ins square.

Then I reduced the depth of colour by using the colour palette tool and sliding the transparency down to 33%.

I printed it out cut to size for my background.

To decorate my frame I found a suitable phrase on Pinterest and used SNF Georginana to write it - I wanted a fancy font.

I typed it in two different sizes and moved them about until I was happy with how they looked.  I then added an offset.

I wanted to have something additional to decorate my frame and decided on some butterflies but I wanted them to coordinate with the rest of the design.

I used the knife tool to cut the darkest section of the background and added it below my phrase. Then I added some butterflies.  As this was a solid section of printing I knew that the butterflies would be completely covered with the pattern and there wasn't a need to add an offset.

Once they were all cut all that was left was to add them to my frame, together with some lace and purchased flowers.

Faux Pearlised metal bear cushion

Hello, it's Verity here from Pretty Little Button. This week the design team is using reflective heat transfer vinyl. This vinyl is great to use on clothing to increase your visibility in low light conditions. However, I love the look of it normally. It has a pearlized look to it as though it is burnished metal and thought it would look great as a modern style cushion. Even when it does catch the light, it still looks really amazing and such an interesting cushion and currently takes pride and place on my craft room chair!

Faux Pearlised metal bear cushion process:

Insert your design into your design space, for this design see the end of the post of the design ID.
Now the reflective HTV comes in rolls of 9"wide by 12" and you can cut this without your Silhouette mat.  To ensure your position is correct, open up the page set up window and adjust the page size using the width and height settings.

Next, open up the transform window. In there, select the rotate tab.

You can either use the green button on the design to rotate the design freely, or you can use some of the pre-programmed rotate options with the rotate tab. This allows you quick and straight rotation to align with your media.

If you still want to work with your design, but the orientation of it is a bit confusing, you can orientate the viewpoint of your design space to continue working with your design. In the page setup window, select the best suit option in the 'Rotate view' section.

Lastly, when you are ready to send, remember you are working with HTV. The software comes up with a friendly reminder asking whether you wish to mirror. If you have already flipped your design prior to this, press send-ad. As I hadn't flipped my design, I selected send mirrored. Remember, if you select this option it will mirror your design, but it will the flip design to cut from the opposite side of the mat, so you need to be aware of where it will cut in relation to where your media will be in the machine.

Once cut, weed all the excess vinyl to leave the bears on the backing sheet. I used a hot iron on cotton setting to heat set the vinyl. I didn't end up using the writing in the end as I loved it just with the bears.

Silkscreen printed cushion - Create Happiness

Hello, it's Verity here from Pretty Little Button. This week is Silkscreen week, so I have another post for you using the Silkscreen starter kit from Silhouette. I have done two previous posts on using the kit, one the unboxing showing you what comes with the kit and also how to cut and print your first design. Check the links at the end of the post to both of these posts for more details. Now I had in mind to create a cushion, however, I knew the design I wanted would be a one of design - I wasn't going to be printing this more than once. Instead of using heat transfer vinyl to create a permanent screen I have used regular adhesive vinyl for a temporary screen which is removable. This allows you to apply another design to the screen and print through that as well. Now, bear in mind, you will get ghosting, which I have pictures below, but the screen is still usable.  If it stretches your supplies, there's no harm!

Silkscreen printed cushion - Create Happiness process:

To start off, add your design in your design space. I use the Antelope font for 'create'. The aperture of the screen measures a US letter size, so select this in the paper size drop down menu in the Page stupe window.

As I wanted my text as large as I could, I wanted to orientate my page in the landscape orientation which is in the same Page Setup window.

The beautiful of making these adjustments to the page size allows you to position your design within the centre of the page using the transform window.

Now I decided, I wanted my text even bigger and therefore separated the two bits of text from one another. The using the rotate feature (little green circle above the text), I could rotate the word at a diagonal across the design space. This gives more room to enlarge the design.

Now I recently did a mini screen printing workshop and notice that they use adhesive vinyl for their screens but placed the vinyl on the underside of the screen - so it is positioned between your fabric and screen. This allowed for a much smoother pull of the paint over the screen without your scraper catching on any vinyl edges.

Therefore I flipped my design horizontally so I could adhere the design onto the back of the screen and for the word to print the correct way round. If you design to adhere your design to the top of the screen you do not need to do this.

Once cut, weed out the positive aspect of the design as seen below.

I then adhere this down to the underside of my screen. I had a few areas where there was no vinyl cover the screen around the edges. To prevent pain accidentally going through where it isn't wanted added non-porous wash tape around the edge to seel the screen.

Once flipped over, you can see the vinyl through the screen and the phrase reads correctly. My wooden slats were a little loose on the edges, so I kept them in place with some micropore tape.

Once I had printed the first design, I removed the screen from the frame and removed the adhesive vinyl. Next, I washed the screen and dried it. As you can see below, you can see a 'ghost' of the screen I just did. The screen is coloured but this does not add affect the screens ability to print in those areas as long as you wash your screen straight away.

Below I adhered my second design to the screen - you can see the ghost of the previous screen but you are able to see the newer design over this.

The gold fabric paint printed beautifully and is such a strong opaque gold. I had a little slippage with my screen when printing and unfortunately got a double printed 's'. Oh well, it's just for my craft room anyway!
