Birthday Cards

I needed three cards for crafty friends with birthdays in January, so I decided to try a Powertex and Bister mini mixed media style and was quite pleased how they came out.

The hardest part was trying to keep them flat once they had been mounted on to the actual card, as they dried on the chipboard they curled!

I used teal pigment along with copper and gold on this one to hi-light the textures.

Bits and bobs, coffee stirrers, corrugated cardboard, cotton scrim, sand balls, string, dishcloth and t-shirt fabric to create the textures.

Everything was sprayed in a mix of brown or natural Bister and water and left to dry overnight.

Once completely dry they were all dry brushed very lightly with ivory Powertex and copper and gold pigments to finish.

Powertex Canvas

So after watching the 7pm Hochanda Powertex show I was inspired to have a go. I haven't been able to see any of the other shows in the day as they have a problem with them on the rewind. So here's my dining room table, all ready to go.

I mixed some fine grade sand in with ivory Powertex and put it through a stencil.

Next in no particular order I added bits and bobs by first covering them in ivory Powertex and sticking them to the canvas. Once I was happy I sprayed on some green, however I'm not entirely sure if it was Bister or PA Infusions.

I left it over night to dry and this morning came back in with green Powertex around the edges, spritzed in brown Bister and used a hair dryer to dry it. I would have loved to have added some rust powder in at this stage, but I don't have any :o( xx

Next I took a very small amount of ivory Powertex and dry brushed it over the green Powertex to bring out the textures. I used green and brown pearl ex and satin varnish to dry brush the middle pieces.

This photo shows the effects of the ivory Powertex around the edge pieces and is more true to the actual colours on the canvas.

And finally a close up of the bits and bobs which consist of corrugated cardboard, cotton scrim, loose cotton jute, packaging, kitchen roll, natural sheep fleece, strands of cotton boucle and slub and a few other things.

Mr Enchanting

Ages ago Chris gave me this bottle and yesterday I used it.

I bulked it out with tinfoil, covered it with masking tape and added a half of a polystyrene ball.

I then prepped everything I needed as this next bit is very, very messy!!

I poured some red powertex liquid into an old ice-cream pot and scooped in some stoneart.

Using a wooden stirrer I mixed it together. I kept adding the stoneart a bit at a time until I got the consistency I wanted.

Now this is the messy part, it's still really, really sticky and needed more stoneart adding to it.

Keep adding and kneading until you get it to something like this.

Using a plastic tube or rolling pin, roll it out. The white is talc which is used in the same way as flour is when baking.

Once you have it rolled out to approx an eighth of an inch, wipe the talc off with a babywipe.

The mixture would not stick directly to the masking tape, so I used the powertex liquid to paint over the masking tape and this helped it to stick.

I kneaded and rolled until I had covered the whole of the bottle. You can use water to massage the pieces together or add pieces in where you need to.

As you can see, it's still a bit lumpy but when I've put some coloured pigments on you shouldn't really see it too much, and it will add to the textures!

And again same thing from the other side. I think one of the reasons it's not really smooth is because of what's underneath. Had it gone directly on the glass I would have been able to get it a lot smoother as there would be something solid to press against.

Whilst it was drying I made a hat and was just checking that it fitted okay.

Then I blinged up the hat once it had dried over night.

**This is not one of the hats I've already made, this is another one which is much bigger and made specifically to fit on the top of the bottle**

Next I added pigments to the bottle, including red, rich gold and bronze gold and from the Pearl-Ex range gold and bronze.

It really shows up the textures and looks fab IRL

Pleased with how the hat came out and how it sits on the bottle. This was taken outside this morning in the sun.

And finally I made some more of the stoneart and powertex mixture, but this time I used the black and once kneaded, I rolled it into a long sausage shape to make the mouth and eyes.

And lastly, a view from the side.

Even though at stages this is really messy, it's so much fun and you get great results.

Tag & Atc

I also made a tag and an atc using the same technique as the previous tags so I am entering these into this weeks Lotstodo challenge as the theme is embossing. This is my second entry but this time I've used heat embossing.

Distressed 4 x 4 Swap

Alison over on Lotstodo is hosting a 4 x 4 distressed / vintage swap. I chose to distress mine using the same technique as the tags below except this time I used Pearl Ex instead of the Silkies.

Backgrounds

Made some background earlier this week. Used combinations of gum arabic, pearl ex and floor wax to get the different effects. Brayered inks on them and then stamped the images using black stazon
