100 days

Happy 100 days of marriage to SJ and I! 100 days since I nearly tripped and fell over my wedding dress.

Since the last time I've posted, it's been a weird and wonderful 100 days. Being married brings all sorts of strange perks (and also troubles) that you would not have thought of. Cooking, cleaning, going to bed, waking up, weekends, holidays all blur into one household. The routine is simple- SJ will cook, I will clean and we will go have designated work time, share a bottle of wine, and head to bed on time. Once in a while we get to go on a holiday. In these 100 days, we've had the pleasure of having guests over in the place we call our home, and it is in these times that I've discovered my inheritance of my mum's OCDness in having the place appear well kept and clean for guests to arrive.

Post wedding, we had our honeymoon in Melbourne, where we were fined not once but twice for speeding 7km/h over the speed limit (argghhh Australians!). For some strange reason the husband loves the Down Under, and I suspect we may be heading back soon the next moment there's a cheap flight offer.

Fast forward a few more weeks and we took our first drive up the highway into KL over the long national day weekend. I was post call so SJ took the wheel...he would have complained I drove too slowly anyways. No complaints there, KL always an affordable holiday on a whim.

Marriage aside, shuttling between Mum's and the in-laws for meals means home cooked food at no expense (time, money, toil)! I always wonder why people are reluctant to go to their in-laws/mum's for dinner. It's easy and yummy :D For those who were wondering, no we don't bring laundry back home for mums to wash (with reference to SJ's wedding speech). August also brought a health scare for a loved one. In a season of too many liver lesions, it was difficult to go through those sleepless nights. Nonetheless, God has been merciful.

In these past months, I've also had the chance to go on a work-related trip to Prague for AMEE 2013. It was an unsolicited opportunity that just dropped at my doorstep and I thought, why not? Not sure why, but I certainly have an affinity with medical education. It is at these conferences that I never fail to be impressed by the hundreds of conference participants who have so much to say about education, and by interesting ideas and models of teaching. Travelling alone though, was not the fun part. I used to think that it was novel to travel alone. Definitely not when you are constantly on the look out, wondering if someone is going to rob you, and worry about your luggage in event that you need to take an emergency pee break. Don't intend to do that again anytime soon.

In 6 days, I will be taking my first post-graduate exam. I have almost just...20% confidence in passing it. (face of horror). Oh well, fighting daily battles, counting daily blessings. :) Till next time!

Becoming a Missus

Hola! It's been a month since getting married and things have been moving so quickly I can hardly catch my breath! I apologize for being missing in action for a while. Please don't forget me!

So...SJ and I got married on 25th May 2013 (writing it down here so I don't forget hmmm...). It was a weird feeling. After months and months of preparation (we started waaaayyy in advance, being the insane planners we are...or I am) it was finally here! We had lots of helps from very awesome friends who sacrificed late weekday nights practicing music and listening of briefing after briefing. Heartfelt thanks for every one who pitched in in one way or another.

The morning was an easy wake up, since we did away with the gatecrashing. (SJ says it is a violation of human rights.) I woke up at a sleepy 7:30 am, after a late night driving the car to the florist to get it dressed up. Had a quick shower and sat around waiting for the best man Jason and maid of honour Kaiqian to arrive. at 9am. For the record, they were both sharp on time. My mum had prepared char siew baos for our breakfast and we had some kopi along with it. The groom took his time to arrive and arrived late at 9:15 am. Still, we had enough time for a couple more char siew baos before the make up artists arrived.

Mr Jason Leong, best man, eating 10x siew mai. Very glam.
Ms Kaiqian, maid (of honour) since 2002
At 10:15 am, our make up artists Jovie and Co from The Little Brush arrived and we all got to work. First on me and Kaiqian, then SJ's mum, my mum and finally the vain boys. Ting from Lightedpixels Pixies reached just shortly after to get some snaps. All was done and good to go by 12:15pm, not before Ting said some emo things which made me tear up and wither in front of everyone! Mark of a good photographer to do something like that! ;O

All was good and relaxing as we reached the church at 1:00 pm, and our trusty helpers had done up the place for a fantastic start. (Knew I chose the right people!) Hung around in the waiting room while family and SJ hosted our guests. 2:15 pm came and we were called to the sanctuary! Walking down the aisle was nothing like what we had rehearsed. Big gown plus stress plus heelslikeneverbefore was made for diasaster! Nonetheless, I made it to the altar in one piece. Yay me.

Everything flew by in a whiz. I mostly remember standing before the altar with my mum by my side and remembering my father which brought tears to my eyes. There was the songs, exhortation, vows and speeches. For those who were at the service, I need to announce that I was hearing SJ's speech for the first time as you were. It was completely unadulterated. O: This was followed by photos photos and more photos until 5:00pm when we called it a day and scooted off to Regent Hotel for our family dinner.

Dinner was a quiet affair. Four tables, family only. We had tea ceremony (which was kind of weird since I had to serve tea to my brothers!) and I quickly changed out of my gown into a sunday dress for comfort, all ready for a yummy meal. Twas yummy indeed!

Mum :)
And so that was the end of our busy day, and thereafter I became a missus. For those who are preparing, please feel free to buzz me for lobangs. My husband is a lobang king and I think we got pretty good deals for our wedding. That said though, it was fuss free and minimalistic.

Oh yes, by the way, this is the man I married. :)

Up next, married life...

On route

Marraige Preparation Course
Alpha Singapore
As cheesy as it sounds, SJ and I started attending this Marraige Prep Course at Alpha Singapore last night. I guess while it does sound kind of hurhurhur, people do take driving lessons before taking their first drive, and swimming lessons before their first dive. Likewise, this series of lessons are in hope of preparing us for a life together. I was particularly blessed by Sai Khim (the Wife) who went to a crazy amount of detail in making the place feel cosy with table lamps, a dove shaped lamp, flowers, and to top it off, hot milo and cookies to end the night. It really is wonderful to have the gift of hospitality. Reminds me very much of Ning's mum and my own mum. :)

Lesson #1 was personality tests. (Please stop rolling your eyes now haha) Having done the MBTI probably more than a decade ago, it was interesting to do it again. The written quiz and my self assessment confirmed my ISTJ personality subtype. We also had to evaluate our partners. Interestingly enough, my final assessment of SJ was ISTP, which contradicted his own self assessment of ISTJ. After about 2 mins of debate, he finally conceded to being an ISTP. Yay me.

Been having many troubled thoughts about my current posting that I wish I could sit with someone to talk through. But as life in this little part of the world goes, people are usually too busy to stop and smell the roses. So I decided to treat myself with an indulgent 1 day of leave (Yes, a waste you'd think) and go for an early quiet breakfast in my part of town, very much like an ISTJ would enjoy haha. I guess the irony would be that my colleagues in the other part of town are enjoying the same treat on the bosses' credit. Having said that though, I really haven't enjoyed breakfast this much as much as today.

Till next time :)
